THE DAILY BEE COUNCIL BLUFF ~MONDAY. MAY 25, 1885. THE DAILY BEE. QOUNCIL BLUFFS. Monday Morning, May 26, SUBSCRIPTION RATES, 0 conte per week 14 T"' 20 000 or oot MINOB MENTION. Strawborries are now causing a regular crush of church festivals. Pool eelllng, and headquarters durlng the races, at the Pacific house. Bricka for sale in large or smaillots by J, A. Weaver, 815 Seventh avenue, There was a s'ight change In the time of tha dammy tains, which went into of- foct yesterday. e The X. Y. Z. club is arranging to give a festival and entertalnment next Friday evening. Chief Skinner has just got a fine young imported dog to keep the wolves off his strawberry beds. Prepare,to pay your poll-tax, as the new collector, O. J. Beckman, will atart on his rounds to-day. Bl Shields was arrested yesterday for belng ugly drank, He will be glven a chance to explain this morning. No more fastdriving across the bridges. So says the mayor, who has ordered the marshal to prosecute any offenders. There seems to be no lack of aspirants for the posltion of deputy revenue collec: tor at thls point. The salary Is $1,350. Chief Skinner has found the travellog card of an engineer, the owner of which can have it on application at police head- quarters, W. T. Smith, arrested on complaint of Joseph Wright for drawlng & rovolver and threatening to use it, has been dis- charged. Relter, in order to close out his pres- ent stock of tailoring goods, is putting prices at 26 to 35 per cent below cost. No. 310 Broadway. The district court met Saturday, but the time was taken up in the assignment of cases, and there will not be a real get- ting down to business until to-day. James Brooks, the ex-pollceman, who hae baen confined to hls house for & year past, s able to be out on the streets by ald of crutches, but is far from recovered., The Injunction cases come up this morning befors Judge Connor, and will be watched with Interest, although it ls hardly probable that a declslon will be reached to-day. A strawberry fostlval and dance Is to be glven June 3 and 4 in the maronic hall, under the management of Mrs. J. ‘W. Cuslck, and for the benefit of the catholic church, Mrs, Mary Hyde was on Saturday grantedadlvorce from her husband, O. J. Hyde, on the ground of desertlon. She has ten children to support, and was granted an alimony of $500. The large brick residence of Mrs, Mc. Mahon, corner Ninth street and Sixth avenue, Is to be ralsed and an addltion built on. W. P, Aylesworth begins work on the building this morning, A colored man named Charles Howard, ‘was caught Saturday afternoon stealing a palr of pantaloons from Beno's store, and being taken before Justice Shurz was sentenced to thirty dsys in jail. The old man Hoover, of whom men- tion was made in the B the other day, 88 belng complalned of for abusing his grandson, Is said to have turned the boy out the other night. The little fellow has now gone to his mother. Last evening the members of Abes Lin- coln post, grand army of therepublle, attended servicas in the methodist church the pastor of which preached an appro- priate sermon. The church was decorated | in a patriotic manner, with flags, ete. The Barbour dramatic company will continuo to smuse and interest the crowds at the dlme museum this week. The mugeum part of the show will con- tinue to contain attractions which are of thomeelves well worth the price of ad- misslon, The little daughter of John Schicketans has been suffering for some time with tome trouble of the nose, and at last the cause of difficalty has been discovered and removed, it being & thoe button, which the little one had in some playful moment placed there, The new clty clerk Is now taking hold in good oarnest, and there will nothing more be done in the controversy, as the old clork says he has no inclination or money to fight it out in the jcourts, and no very good show to win if he did, Now the chiof of the fire department Is to be sottled, There were sixty-four cases of straw- borries sold In this oity Saturday, for home cousumption only, and thero being 24 boxes to a thoe total number of boxes reached 1,636, and as each box was probably made to dofor more than one person, there must have been several thousand persons who yesterday tested the frait. Judge Connor will hold his court In the clerk’s office this morning, the court room belng taken by the regular session of the dltrict cowrt. Although there is to be only preliminary sparring 1n the i injunc- tion cases, stlll the interest in every step of the probibitory prosecutlons is so great that It Is doubtful whether the clork's office will be roomy enough to accomme- date all the listeners, The Omaba Herald is now to drop its attempt to have a Ccuncil Bluffs corres. pondent, Charlic Peat, who hes boen do- ing that work, ard do'ng it well, having decldd to jo'n with his brother, who s also a thoroogh rews| ing & new democratic psper in Neligh, ¢ may, in etart- | from there to Miszo Nebraska, They will make a strong toam, and thele many friends here will wish them succots from the very start. Yesterday afternoon two young men in driving along Broadway near the dum- my depot, wers unceremonionrly dumped out, the tongue dropping down as the horses were trotting along, and striking the ground, lifting the front part of the vehlole so that the front wheels were pulled feom undor, letting the box fall, while the team went jogging off at thelr pleasure. 1t Is reported that Sander, the museum man, aboat whom there have been so many surmises and inquirtes, has not been out of the olty, but has been lying qulet at one of the leading hotels, having beenon a little spree and not getting over it sufficlently to appear in public. The hotel mon with whom it is reported that ho has been stopplng are very roti- cent about the matter, and claim to know nothing about his whereabouts. The Rov. Mr. Crofts, pastor of the congregational church, gave an excellent sormon yesterday morning on the “Working Church.” He has been quite 11l for a day or two and was hardly able to get through the morning service, and in conrequence of hls conditlon no even- ing service was held. It s not thought to be any serlous ailment, and his many friends hope to see him in accustomed health In a fow days, The interruption to the evening services was a disappoint- ment to many and to the pastor himself, as the evening servlees have been in- creasing In interest and in atlendance. The Aylesworth-Loofbourow contest has been argued and submitted, and the Gth ot June has been et as the day for & declslon to bs rendered. Judge Ayles- worth and his friends are very confident that the result will be In his favor. Ia such an event Alderman Mynster has an eye on the posltion of judge of the su- perlor court, and as the mayor has the appointing of zome one to fill the vacancy until the next city election, he willdoubt- less glve the place to his admirer. When 1t comes to a yote of the people, how- ever, the result may change this order of exerclezes greatly. Frederlck C. Gertenborg was arrested Saturday, his wife claiming that while drunk he had been abusive to her. He begged 8o that he was allowed to gc, on promising to keep away from the house, but soon his wife sent word that he was raising another row and he was re- arrested. He in turn complained that James Harvey had assaulted him, and Harvey was also arrested. The wife, a little later, went secarity for Hervey's appearance Monday morning, and Ger- tenberg was allowed to go on his own re- cognlzance, to appear in court at the same time, The family troubles will, therefore, be adjusted this morning, . There teems to be nothing definitely known as to what is to be done In the matter of chleftainship of the fire depart- ment. It seems that ths council has wisely concluded to get the questlon of clty clerkship settled firmly first, and then proceed with the other at thelr leisure. As the new chief has duly qual- ified, and as the mayor's veto does not appear to be of any account, there seems to be little for anybody to do, except for the old chief to gracefully retire and the new chlef to go on with his duties. The old chief should take warning from the case of the clty clerk, and not hurt his reputation by trying to hold on. His friends wlll think more of him if he re- tires gracefully, &nd his enemies can think no worae of him. The crowd of new advertisements in the Bek shows that the business men of the clty are alive to their Interests, and propose to use the hast means of letting the public know what they have for sale. The Bee is the only paper that gives its patrons the benefit of sworn statements as to Its clrculation, and Inspectlon of its actusl number of papers published. The ! need of this is paesing away, however, as t s generally conceded now that the Bee has the largest circulaticn of any, and in fact, of all other papers in the city. The Council Bluffsadvert/sements appearinthe en'ire morning edltion, and thus adver- tlses the business of Council Bluffs over a largo extent of country in which no other Councll Blaffs paper puts in even an ap- pearance. Thls fact, and the wenderful growth of the circulation, here as well as elsewhere, has caused some of the sieepy competitors to fill their columns with howls, but 1t is of no avall. Business men, who have tested the facts by actual trlal, know that it pays to advertise in the Bk, and that is enough, i - Substantlal abstracts of titles and roal estate loans, J, W, & E.
