The School Baard Appropriates $5,000 Toward a City Bailding, Few A Petitions Considered—Ar- rangements for Commencement Week—New Qaarters Dosired ~Matters of Businoss Attended To, The oity school board met last night In adjourned sesslon, elght members pres- ent, and with them Aldermen Goodrich and Schrader, a committee from the oclty courcll, who, at the fast meeting of that body was appointed to lay before the school hoard a propositlon looking to the erectlon of a city buildlng. Such aned- ifice is badly needed now, but as the city is a llttlo short of funds, and the school board not belng blessed with a perma. nent ablding place, 1t was thought that if they wonld make an appropriation of $5,000, which sum would pay for the ex- cavatlon and foundation then the coun- cil oan raise emough to rear upon eaid foundation a8 stracture that will not only be cradit- able to Omaha but give the city officers a permanent and pleassnt home. In conslderation of this $5,000 1t is proposad that the school board shall have its quar- ters In the building. This proposition was lald before the board by Mr. Goodrich, and after closing bls remarks he stated that if any further information was deslred Mr. Rosewater, of the BEE, who was present, could give it. Being called upon, Me. Rosewater, in gubstance, sald that under the law the board had a right to appropriate the amount aeked for, then |f an additional sum should be required it could be given by a special election for that purpose, He further called atten- tlon to the feasibility of helpiing to erect a clty building, and by donating a part of the tunds neceesary then the board will have authorlty to asslst in settling the detall of work, the plans, and also dictate the arrarglng quarters to suit its pur- posee, On motion the matter was referred to the finance committes, Mesara, Hall, Coburn, and Polnts, with power to act. After that the board proceeded to the conslderation of a faw buslness matters and among other things acted on several petitions, 1. 8. Hancall sent in one offering to furnlsh 10,000 cubic yards of earth for $1,000, and in the even' of its requlring the removal of more than that amount, to recelve 40 cents per yard. The offer ‘was accepted. The bond of Truman Buck as treasurer of the echool district of Omaha, was re- celved and approved. The bond amounts to $250,000. The bond of Charles Connoyer, secretary of the board, wes also approved. A petitlon from eenlor scholars of the High echool, asking that an orchestra be added to the school during commence- ment exercises, was rejocted. A motlon prevailed instruct!ng Secre- tary Connoyer to sccure the use of Boyd's opers houte for commencement exercises, and It was also agreed that a general admissfon fes of ten cents, and twenty-five cents for ressrved seats, shall be charged for these exerclses. This feo will go to the litbery fund. Aclaim of $75, held by Contractor Duffy, for grading, was ordered paid. On motion of Mr. Connoyer, the plans of Cleves Brothers for a basement to the Hartman school building wera adopted, and the committee on buildings and prop- erty was authorized to advertise for pro- posals and enter into a contract for the immediate erection of sald basement. A resolutlon offered by Mr. Copeland fixing the salary of the secetary at $1,500 a year was adopted; also one providing for an asslstant secretary, whose duty it shall be to bave the supervislon of the fines and licenses, at a salary of $600 per annum, This assistant is {o be ap- pointed from the members of the board and he is to work at least ten hours a week. In the rooms it now occupies the board is not very comfortably sltusted, and on motion of Mr. Long last night a commit- tee was ralsed to secura other quarters. That commistee is composed of Mesers. Long, Coburn, Clark, Copeland, and James, Messrs. Copeland, Livesey and Clark were made & speclal commitiee to confer with B, C.
