that time, When the workingmen'’s pto- cesslon marched down Farnam street, the martial maslo stirred Johnson's fight- ing qualities and he at once determined to protect the property of hls employers at all hazards, Mounting the hurricane deck of the stoam shovel he calmly gripped his revolver to recelve the on- coming. host of brawny breadwinners, He did not quail when sticks and bricks carved the alr above and around him and while cantlously feeling for a victim, well-diracted *‘billy” eaught him in the back of the neck, and he tumblsd from his lofty perch, As soon as he struck the ground the bosom of his pantaloons wan filled with flylng boots and other viclons miseilos. ~The struggle was a brief but lively one, and Johnson stood up to his meals for a woek after, e — POLICE POINTS. Weeding Ont Suspicious Characters — An Old Man Fleeced, THE LINCOLN TRAGEDY. A Woman's Dishonor Leads to a Donble Harder, Husband and P From Bullet Woands—The Cause of the Tragedy a Former Resident st Omaha, amour Both Die The Lincoln tragedy, which oscarred on Monday, has resulted In the death of both of its vletims, Long having died on Taesday. The particalars of the affuir aro of considerable Intereat to residents of Omaha, as the woman In the case s well-known in this clty, having resided here for some time. She was the wife of s wellknown railroad man, and had many acqualnfances about town. The The first peraon to appear bafors Judge Lincoln News farnishes the following ac. | Sroober8 yesterdsy morning _ was count of the traged the man named J. E. Price, Monday nighta littlo before 12 o'clock, | who was arrested by the a continuous cracking of revolvers, the screams of a woman and the cries of a wounded man, aroused the residents around the corner of Eighth and R streots, and dleclosed the fact that some terrible tragady was belng enacted. Those who first reached the scene found Lew Johneon, a freight conductor on the B, & M. road, who lives in the house on that corner, lylng on the walk in front of his house crying out with mortal paln while his wife In her night clothes was rushing about as {f destracted, To the inquiries of thcse who came, the woman #0id that sho had shot her hueband and A also Ed, Long, a roomer in the house. . She had a revolver in her hand and threatened to shoot some of these who camo about, until they felt it safer to withdraw. Mr. Stubblefield, the owner of the house, lives in a part of the largs double house, ran out, and finaing his neighbor Smith, the hackman, just coming home, he jomped In and was driven dowa for the police, They were found, and two taken Into the hack and carrled back, while the third went after medlical help. When they got there quite a number of nelghbors, alarmed by the racket, had gathered. Johoson was stlll laylng on the walk, but some of his frlends got a pillow, and put under his head and a comfortable over hlm, Up stairs In a bedroom on the floor lay Ed. Long pierced with two bullets and from the gaping wounds his life blood was gushing ont. Mr. Stubblefield was the first to find him, and to his inquirles, Long sald thet Lew Johnson had shot him, and that be had shot Johneon. He further eald that he thought he was going to die, and he koped he had killed Johnson, By the time Dra. Lane and Hart came Johnson was so far gone that nothing could be done for him, and he died In half an hour from the time he was shot. The doctors at once turned their atten- tion to Long who atill Iay upon the floor until they came. He had on nothing but an undershirt, and a pair of drawers, He was lald upon the bed in the room, and an examination made which showed a ballet hole in the small of the back just beside the spine, and another In the right slde closo up to the armpit in front. The body was completely paralyzad from the first wound down, and the doctors coald give but little hope for life. They probed but did not find either bullet. The facts in regard to this terrible police Tuesday evening as a susplcions character. The ocharge preferred was vagrancy, and considerable time was spent by the court In endeavoring to cortain the man's antecedents, His storfes did not seem to haog together well, and he contradicted himself ssveral times on belng questloned. He regtstered at Slaven’s hotel under the name of N. Blye, but could glve no reascn for so doing. The next cases were those of James Smith, Constance Ford, George Emerson and Frank Hills, All pleaded guilty to intoxication, and were fined 5 and costs, which they will work ont. When cap- tured, Ford, who is an Italian, was crazy drunk, .and had a long dirk concealed about his person. Dave Hurst was a finely-dreesed man to appesr on a charge of vagrancy, but he was apprehended under the statute which defines attendants and Inmates of gambling houses to be vagrants, Dave lives at the Blaffs, and is a gambler by profession. He vleits Omaha quite frequently, but never seoms to have any business, and puts in his time hanglng around the streets. His actions have been of a sueplelous nature, and Judge Stenberg concluded that he was not needed around Omshs. He therefore sentenced him to sixty days in the county jall and to psy the costs. Sentence was suspended, however, until 11 o'clock, and it will not be wiss for Hurst to show his hexd in the clty for some time to ceme. Poter Green, colored, was aleo up on the same charge. He Is the husband of the notorious Delia Green, and it has been hinted that he had something to do with her crooked actions. Peter, how- ever, claimed to be stralght, and the judge discharged him with a long lecture and numerous warnings to beware how he carried himgelf In the future. Thomas Boyd is & young man, and he was accused by a white-hatred old sinner named John Leslle of having made away with his cash. Leslle, who lives at Plattsmouth, came up Tuesdsy with tho excarsion, and immediately procoeded to get as full of beer as possiblo, He then wanted to “‘take in the town,” and late in the evening, at some place, he fell in with Boyd, who proceeded to show him around. After taking numerous glaeses of beer, the happy couple entercd a house kept by a woman named Mitchell Hero the old man became infatusted affalr soem to be about as follows: John-| wii}” "2 *(arming creataro and son and wife had occupled tho resldenco | Five o “u twenty dollar geld cornor of 8th and R stroets for como| B 0™ bo' changod, Vhilo the months, renting tome of the rooms to lodgers. Among these was Ed Long, a switchman In the B. & M. yards, who had a room on the second floor and took his meals st Mr. Stubbleficla’s. The nelghbors have known for some time that there was trouble between Johnson and his wife, and for a couple cf weeks he hes not come about the bouso, 8o that a ramor was current that ho had left her, Her partlality for Lorg was said to bo the cauae, and his infatuation for her way g0 manifest that it was making scandal, and Mrs, Stubblaficll had nott- fied him lsst Saturday that he must got his meals clsewhere, From the appear- anco it seoms that Johnson, whose train was in snd was to go out at 12 o'clock last night, had found Long in the room with Mrs, Jobhoson, Both were in their night clothes. Aws Johnson forced hie way Into the room, Long rin out and up staire, From the bullet hole in his back, Johnson's firet bullet must have struck him a3 ho was on the stsirs. He went into tho room, locked the docr and got his revolver. Johnson followed him up, and with at least two vigorous burst the catch of the deor and threw it open. As they stood thero soveral shots were exchanged, cne striking Long in the side, while a shot from his ravolver struck Johneon in the right side not far from the nipple, and ranged down past the neart through the body. Tais was the only wound he recsived. Heo ran down and oat to the sidewalk where he fell, He was oonscious almost to the last, and related what he had done. Walt Montgomery, hind brakeman on his train, who roomed at Johnson's hous was the first to reach him, To him, Johnson said, *I found Long In bed with my wife, just as I expected, and shot him,"” To those who came fiest, Mrs. John- son eaid she had shot both men, bat she soon retracted this, She had evidently been drinking, and was under the Influence of liquor at the time, The police took charge of her as well as the premises, and remained all night. The body of Johnson was re- moved to Undertaker Heaton's rooms to be prepared for burlal, and await the coroner's inquest. Mrs. Johnson is somewhat known in the clty. = She is an expert skater and a frequenter of the rinks. At the Metro- olitan rink, Ssturdsy night, she took {he blg cake offered as a prize fcr the best lady skater. Before her marrlage to Johnson she had been divorced from another husband out at Kearney, She had the reputation of being somewhat fast, but was not supposed to be as bad a8 she proves. Johnson was formerly sheriff of Bufislo county, end was known to be a man of nerve, On one occasion he eubdued a rebellious prisoner by sheoting him through the ear. Howas a largo, fine looking man, about 32 years of age, and had been conducter on the road for two girl was gone after the change the old man claims that he was hurried from the house by the man Boyd and not allowed to return, Boyd denfed taking the old man’s money, but owned up to taking him to the place kept by the Mitchell woman, On this evidence Judge Sten- berg sentenced Boyd to be Imprisoned tn the county jsil for forty days, the last ten of them on bread sand water. This sentence was also under the statute pro- viding that employes of housos of prosti- tution are to bo classed as vagrants, with no visible means of support. e ———— Real Estate Transfers, The followlng transfers wore filed May 12, with the county clork aud reported for the BEE by Ames’ real estato agenocy: George H.
