A deserter from the regular army named John Cumings, was picked up yeaterday by Deputy Marshal Bates, and taken back to Omaha. It is reported that Samuel Jennings, the shoemaker at 522 Broadway, has been missing since last Friday, and his friends are anxlous about him. In another column will be found a notloe of the water works company, which shonld be read and acted upon promptly by all who hold time orders agalnst the company. Alya MoAlllster left yesterday for Philadelphis, to study muslc, and wee accompanied by Miss Castella Lain, who left for her home after a visit to the fam- ily of 8. E. Maxon, ¢ William Cullen Bryant ocousidered Mies Potter the best reader in the field.” —Boston Times. At the opera house Thutsday evening, May 14, Admission 50 cents, children 25 cents. The case brought agalnst young Mossler by Miller, growing out of the trouble Saturday night over & $5 bill, was dls- missed yesterday by Judge Shurtz, Mil- ler not appearing to prosecute. Mayor Vaughan has recelved word that his only sfster, Mrs, R. F. Smith, of At- chison, Kan., is very low with consump- tion, and s hardly expected to long sur- vive. He will leave for her bedslde this evening. A telegram yesterday recelved from Deadwood by Henry Eiseman announced the death of Mr. Elseman’s old partner, A. Bernard, by sulclde on Sunday morn- Ing. No particulars were given, simply stating that he “‘killed himself.” Remember the chalr soclable of the Young Men’s Christian assoclation, to be held this evening, and send or bring your chalrs, This gatherlng promises to be a declded success. No efforts will be spared to make the evening a most en— joyable one in every respect. At the new hall, southwest corner Maln street and Broadway. Mr. Sander, the dime museum man, while iIn Omaha on Sunday night, was returning toward the dummy depot, and when on Tenth street was assaulted with the evident Intention of robbery. The assallant struck at Mr. Sander, but the blow was warded off and Mr. Sander 1ald the man out by & well directed blow from Mr. Sander’s strong arm. Willlam Steinkopf and a frlend were enjoylng a ride Sunday afternoon, when in lighting a clgar a spark caught on the laprobe, and just as Stelnkopf remarked that the sun was getting very hot, hls friend smelled the smoke and dlscovered the fire. By that time it had burned its way Lhrough to the skin, leaving a hole through laprope and clothing. The Pharmaceutical society of Iowa opens its annual meeting In the Mynster block on Broadway this mornlag. Itls expected that the mayor will dellver the address of welcome, and the other exer— clses will be of interest to many outside of the professlon proper. The displays of goods will form an Interesting and in- structive feature of the meeting, and all are invited to attend any and all of the meetings, The Wabash rallway company has opened its new local depot near the other passenger depots on lower Maln street, and Is already selllng tickets, and tran- sacting the other neceesary business there, 8o that the public may have the ,ascommodations which have been needed. The improvement Is one which will be appreclated by the public, as heretofore it has been nece:sary to go clear to the transfer to take the Wabash trains, The water works company has changed hands, not in the immediste local man- sgement as yet, Harry Birkinbine belng still the engineer in charge here, but in the ownership, The new president of the company {s Robert Sowell, the prominent New York attorney, whose npnutlon has been made national, and the new treasurer s Harry Allen, of the New York bsnking houte of Allen & Stead, and who {s one ¢f the well-known men In financlal circles. It sppears that the statement made by the “Old Lady” in her *Sun- day mornlng scrapbook” that the extra expense of maiotalning separate headquarters for the police was $11000 a year was a little too high an estimate, the only expense being two tons of coal lsst wiater and an extra gas jet. Ald. Straub is satd to feel little sore because as chulrman of the police coramittee, he has been Ignored In the proposed change. He thinks that be ought to have zome- thiog to say. The chief trouble seems to be that the obief of police and the eclty) Spinach e marshal cannot live and do bustners in the same bullding without quarreling. The report comes from Harrison county, thata fellow glving his name as Willlam Wiles, and claiming to be a resl- dent of Brownsville, Neb., haa been tak Ing subsoriptions for the Bek and other papers, aud the complaint Is made that there have been no papers received for the money which he had collected, although three or four weeks have passed slnce he disappeared. The Ber has had no such man canvassing for it, and prob- ably the other papers which he claimed to represent, are equally ignorant of him, although the Bae speaks only for Itself. 1f he is & swindler, he should be passed around. An authorized sgent has no difficulty, or hesitancy, in showlng his papers. and none others should be THE DAILY BEECOUNCIL BLUFFS---TUESDAY MAY 12, 1885 THE CARNIVAL. R. Beard’s Wall Paper Store. Send for prioe list. BADLY RATTLED. An Italian Jumps From a Train and Runs Into a Barbed Wire ¥Fenoce, & On the Incoming train, on the Chicago & Milwaukee road Sunday afternoon, about a mile and a half west of Weston, will have somothing worthy of the atten- tlon and admiration of the crowds, which will surely vislt them during the after- noons and evenings of this week. The purpose of all this work Is not merely to give dellght to those who at- tend the entertalnment, but to ralse money to help pay for the beautiful church now in process of erectlon, and n all oltizens must take pride in havin such a bulldiog located here, all lhonld gladly joln in farthering the enterprise, in which the ladles are leading off so nobly. a passenger, an Itallan, jumped from the car, and started to run over the fields in & manner that indlcated that he must be crazy, and some of the tralnmen pat out after him, The fellow got caught In a barb wire fence, and was thus taken, brought back to the traln, and into this olty. His head waa badly cut where he had come In contact with the fence, and Dr. Macrae was called on to sew up the wound. Detectlve Fero, of the Mil- waukee road, took the man In a hack to the transfer, and when near there the fellow became very wild agaln and had to be overpowered by main force. He was at last taken to the county jall, it being evident that he was not In ocondi- tion to puraue his journey to San Fran- clsco, for which point he had a ticket, The Amerlcan booth promises to be one of the most attractive, and is a very bower, adorned with flags, surmounted by the eagle, and, In fact, covered all over with pntrlotum. A regular New England supper is to be served hero on Wednesday evening, and refreshments are to be found here at all times. To- morrow evening the supper will be served from 6 o’clock on; so that business men may partake anly. if they are obliged to return to thelr offices. The Icelandic booth {s one which is novel and pretty, new u«cenery being speclally painted for it, and the whole effact of its arrangement being attractive. The other booths, each presents some special attractlons. There Is a German booth, & Gypsy tent, a_Brltish booth, & trio, England, Ireland, and Scotland, each having an exhiblt, the Tarkish booth, the Japanese, French, Itallan, which he had bought in Pittsburg. He had also §20 In money. The man seems to be about thirty-five years of agé, and is unable to speak but little English. He keeps talking about two boys whom it appears he expects to meet in San Franclsco, and talks so wlldly about some matters that the suspleion has been aroused in the mind of some that he may be oneof those who was concerned in the second trunk mystery for which sev- eral Italians have already been arrested. An effort was made yesterday to get some Italian to interpret what the fellow was talking about, but it appeared that none could be found able to understand all that he sald. ————— Facts worth remembering when you buy wall paper. 1lst.—That Beard, next door to postoftice h: select from. 2d.—' low as the lowest. 3d.—That he lsa practical interior decorator and employs none baut skillful workmen.
