* “THE THREE MOUNTS." Epitome of a Scrmon Prepared by the Late Minister of toe Lutueran Charch in Omaha, ‘Recited” Last Night by Request, in that Place of Worship, The beautiful Lutheran charch was filled last evening with & congregation that, like all Omaha charch congrega- tlons, exhiblted the deep Interest which such ooccssions awaken. And which in this case was especlally marked, doubt- less owlng to the fact that the sermon which was to b *‘recited” by the present ocoupant of the pulpit, was prepared by the late minlster—Rev. Dr. Stelllng— just before his death. After tho usual eervices had been finished, the minister, feelingly alluding to the elrcumstances connected with the preparation of this discourse which he was about ‘‘to recite word for word” as neatly as possible, announced as the sabject of his address: ‘“THE THREE MOUNTS,” Sinal, Tabor and Calvary, referring, as the scripture upon which the remarks wore founded, to Exodus xix: 16 19 Matthew xvil: 1 to 5, and Luke xxi 3. ‘These scriptural passages were read when thesermon began w iththe general propcs!- tlon that great evants of afl sorts and the places of thelr happaning, seemed to be attended and marked by ¢ rcumstances and sitaations which could be recogniz.d and seen, long after all else, tave the memory of thelr occurrence, had fled or been destroyed. All elee might fade away and be forgotten, but the *-genlus of the events” never forsakes them. Superstitions exist always and cluster around the grave of some violence, and a sort of spirit of the occaslon lingera about the spot where occurred a thing of interert; and as the travelor nesrs the #pot and finally stands where such scones took placa, he feels as though the spell of that happeniog was upon him. = The memorles of our early fathera In America, barsting the tle that held their allegiance to Eagland ara awakened by a vislv to Independence Hall, in Philadel- phia, and we seem to be thore more than a hundred years ago, mingling with those groat men who signed the charter that gave to this people the liberty they asa natlon enjoy. The pealivg of the Liberty bell in that old hall rings down through the mists and crags of time and repeats the song- notes of freedom as it did in 76, So when one vlsits the old chamber of the United States senate, ho seems to be carrled back to the days when the trio of glants, Clay, Webster and Calhoun, with the tread of intellectual majesty moved upon that floor. Imagination places him in the same seat and the very echoes of 1hls footstep sound lke the fooifall of those men. Let one vieit the blood-stained field of Geottysburg, where more than a acore of years ago, men shot each other to death, and in that hour of conflict decided the destiny of a natlon, As he stands upun one of those now peaceful hilis and looks over tho quiet lit:le village tha' scems to be asleep near by, fancy brings bick to him the roar and grand circumstance of war. He soems to hear the bellowicg of the angry guns and the hissing of the awift rifle balls; the waving grain is agaln bending beneath the advancing tread of warring hosts; the gresn vales trem- blingly echo and re echo the blast of bogle and the bursting of shell; the leaves of the forest tree are hidden In the smoke of battle and the groans of the mangled mingle with the shouts of the victora. Standing there, one feels the kindling of a renewed fire, and that feellog is the gonlus of the place, whizh throughout every fibre of his frame inspires him. So 1t Is with spots where extrasrdi- nary events of raliglous character ‘have taken place; where things concern- ing the soul occarred. 1t s a remark- able fact that every one uf the places where ocourred some great significant event, which God wished to uee for a manifestation of his power and bis love, is & prominent place; & placo seeming to have been sclected by God as fitted to last and continue as & monumental ro- minder of the event occaring there. So true s this that noarly all such p'aces are mountalns, places likely to withstand the ravages of time, and yet pleces not remarkable except that God selected and marked them tor some great event. In keeping with this fact there are three places that at once suggest them- selves to the christian and the student of God’s holy book. These are Mounts Sinal, Tabor and Calvary, Sinai’s teach- Ings are those of monument, be- cause the mountain itself is deso- te but grand, surrounded and clothed In waste, yet high and seen from afar. The selectlon of this place shows divine wisdon for the purpose intended, viz: God wished to give to marmuring Tarael an unobstructed view of himself in His mighty wrath and swfal splendor, and He selected this prominent place to do so. Having tnstracted Moses to preparo hs poople 10 see God dessend In bis omnlp- otence, he likewlso ordered him to warn them not to approach nearer than a given point under penalty of death, and then on the third day hedescended amld light- nings and thunders and great surround- ings. The sermon here ‘‘recited,” in cholce and most vivid language described the awful grandeur of that descent of Johovah in the sight of fear-stricken lo- rael, and the forty days communion with Moses *‘face to face God’s purpose was to imprees the people with bis power and his anger atthetr murmurings against thelr chosen lpader, and he did it in a manner to last through all the rolling centurles, This scene on Sinal teaches God's wrath towards those who sin and his purpose was by ln.;ulng them with awe to rebuke them, The storm upon that mountain was & plcture of the un- compromising character of God towards those who break his law, Sin was not anticipated away back in the beginning, and thls scene on Sinal manifested this principle. And in this view there Is nothing to admire about Sioal, for be- hind those awful scenes was an angry God. Tabor presents & more pleasing scene to the Christian's eye. IFretty in itsell and beautifully surrounded, with land. scrape and distant hills, sand clothed iu green and flowers, It was & fit place for Ohrist and his ohosen three, Jobn aund James and Peter to go upon and pray. It was fitly selected for Chrlst’s transfigoration and putting off the ap- pearance of humanity to appear in heav* enly whiteness and the {mage of the glorified, So splendld did he and the place appear that Feter unable to con- tain his thought, crled out and proposed to the masier that they should erect thron ' 1, one for Chrlst, anoiher 1 for Mcuau and another for Ellae, and as ke the volce spoke from the This is my beloved son; hear ye Here we have a Heavenly le God and righteous Immortality, Moses who talked with God on Sloal, Ellas who was caught up in & char'ot cf fire and carrled to heaven, and Chriat, the beloved sonof God, The sermon hero contained s finely drawmn ploture of the land to which the Christ- ian goes and the friends he will be thrown with there, the contrast of the beauties of Taboe with the terrors of an angry God on Sinai, which drove away the sccnes witnessed by Clirist and his chosen apostles, and when the cloud that enveloped the God who apoke passed off left the four alone, was particularly well drawn, Better, declared the sermon, not to bave scen the beauttes of Tabor if Sinai mocks and destroya the beautiful ploture; hence must go elsewhere. Where?! To Chlvary, or as it 1s called Golgotha—the place of a skull, ora skull. Either mean- ing will do, because If it Is the place where bones of men executed lald, or a place shaped like a skull, it mattera not, for In either sentc it is falr to presume that Mount Calvary was not of fself in- viting. Here the sermon plctured a long rocession moving out of Jerusalem, Eudud by three men supposed to be ¢ iminals, soon after the scene on Mount Tabor had taked place. This vest crowd were cn the road to Calvary, where the three men who were in the front were cracified. One whom the crowd seemed most in- ceneed agalnst was crucified In the center place with a thief on each slde of him. Above his head was written, *‘This Is Jesus, the king of the Jows !” [A vivid picture of the Son of God dying and dend was recited at this point.] At the moment that this man Christ ylelded up his life and cried to his Father, ‘It is finlshed,”” look yonder at Sinai, continuad the s:rmon, ail torn by an earthquake, as if God was uneasy on his seat of anger. Hear the thunder, sey the lightnings, llsten to the roar and bekold the blackness eetile on the earth. After this storm was over look again. The body of Jesos is still on the cross, but tho clond aud blacknees have flad from the earth and the face of Sinails bare. Here is typifiad the misslon and the mediaticn of Christ. Calvary had placed iteelf between the Slnai of God’s wrath and the Tabor of Ohrlst's love, and thus had reconciled God's wrath to men, Tho well written and highly rhetorleal production closed with a splendid apos- tropbe to Calvary as the type of perca, pardon, joy and immortality. — The ‘‘Faust Buck Beer” Is now being botiled by Kd. A BEAUTIFUL GIFT, The Badge Voted to Ex-Governor Furnas Made in Omaha and Soon Ready for Bhipment. During the last session of the Nebraska legislature, a resolution was passed by the senate whereby the making of a suitable badge was authorlzed, to be presonted in the name of Nebrasks, to her commlssioner at the New Orleans exposition—the Hon. R. W. Furnae, ex-governor of the state. Hon. Church Howe, president of the senate, has interasted himsalf In the ma ter and I now In the ofty looking after the completion of this symbol of the peo- plu appreclation of Gov. Farnas' work at Now Orleans In behalf of Nebraska. Secretary of State Roggen, to whom varlons devigos for such a badga were submitted for selectlon, has decided apon one sent by our townsmen, MAX MEYER AND BRO, A reporter was shown this exquisite plece of workmanship Satarday, and will try to describe it to the readers of the Bee. Upon a scarlet ribbon as a back- ground appears this elegantly execated plece of work, which 1s a credit to the tasto and skill of the anufacturers. The badge may be eald to be three-fold. At the bottom Is a large star, in each point of which is a symbollc representa- tlon of some product of the state; upon the face of the star is the greal saal of the state of Nebraska, encircled by wreaths of oak leaves and laurel in shaded, three-colored gold, and set at different points upon a field of grass are an anvil with a man at work, a sheaf of grain, a farm house and a traln of cars, the whole most beautlfally executed and distinetly visible, Above this seal 1s a golden bar bearing the coat ofarms of the United States, whose englo grasps the arrows and the laurel. Upon o bar above thls are the initlal Jet- ters of the ex-governor, “R. W, F.,” in variegated gold. At the top of the badge is a square field of white and red enamel, in whose center s the flag of Nebras! at the foot of whose statl are the words, in raised Ietlcrl, “‘She 1s just eighteen years old to-day.” This exqulsite gem was designed by Mr. L. J. Ksas and the work done by him and the other workmen In Meyer's store. Itis unllke any kindred work the reporter has ever seen, and will be ex- hiblted In the window of Max Meyer & Bro.'s jowelry store on Saturday and Monday. Placed in a scarlet silk plush casket, lined with deep blue plush, this elegint gift of & proud young commonwealth to an honcred and worthy representative son, Is one well to be proud of, and it will be forwarded to Commlssioner Fur- nas next week to be exhlbited at New Orleans May 30th. The *‘Faust” beer, bottled by Ed. Maurer, is fresh and unsteamed. It ls put up in bottles with patent ‘lightning stoppors,” which makes it convenient to open and handle the beer. The *Faust” ia considered the finest beer in the coun try. A TROUCE. The Sperry and Northwestern Elec- tric Light Companics to be Oper- ated on a Mutual Basis, 1t now looks as though the war that has been golng on for months past be- tween the Northweatern Electric Light company and the Sperry Electrle com- pany was about to come to a close. In fact, it was announced this mornlng that artlcles of agreement have already been slgned, whereby the removal of the Northwestern plant from Strang's bulld- ing to the headquarters of the Sperry Light will be accomplished. Thisstep has been taken for two reasons—first because Mr. Strang desires to use the store now oocupled by the Northwestern for his own business, and partly because it is belteved that the semi-consolidation of the two companies will be profitable to both, A reporter called upon a representative of the Northwestern company, Saturday, | and ascertained some facts about the pro- posed change. It will not exactly bo & merglng of the Northwestern into the Sperry as both compantes will for the pres- ent retain each its own set of ofiicon, whlle 7 the management of the business consoli- dated will be placed in the hands of a gentleman who will be selected at a meeting of the trustees of the companies, to be held next week. The buslness will thus be operated on a mutual basls, the further particalars of which cannot yet be published. The dynamos cf the Northwestern company, of course, will be operated by the machinery of the Sperry plant. The lighting power and area of the two organ- zations comblued will be very large, as the Sperry hes 250 arc H;,h!n, wnh no in- candescent ones, while the]Northwestern has about 175 Incandescent lights, of large and small sizes, New machinery has been orderad and will be operated by the two companies. The Mogul light, something new in the way of electric apparatus, will be adopted, and itis belleved will prove highly successfal, Each Mogul light 1s of 160 candle power. This arravgement, it s generally thought, is for the purpose of heading off the Heuston Eleotric Light company, which 1s rapldly establishing lines in this city, and Is lhrelunlng to devour a large share of the bnunul — Orders are now recelved for the cely- brated ‘‘Faast Buck Beer,” bottled ke Ed.
