SHOT BY HIMSELF, Frederick Schrot, an Unlucky Nim- rod, Meots with aSerious Accident. — About9 o'clockyesterday morning Fred- erlok Schrot, a young man living In Union precinct, about six miles north of the northwestern buslness can be amloably disposed of, the way will be open to a eettlement of the other troubles. The Chicago Tribune has the following to say about the action of the North- western: The latter Is evidently holding off to see what the tripartite roads will do after the thirty days allowed by the arbitrators in which it 1s to report its Sioux City & Paclfic and Fremont, Elkhorn & Missourl Valley business to the assoclation, have expired. The thirty will expire durivg the first week in May, and as the North- western has no idea of complying with the decision of the arbltrators, the other roads in the tripartlte combination will no doubt meet and declare the North- wes| to be no longer a member of the associstion. The Northwestern will then carry the war beyond the Missourl river and try to force the Union Paclfic to give it a fall share of its business in spite of the tripartite agreement. It can therefora be seen that the present fight is only preliminary to the biz war that will oocur after the thirty days’' grace allowed by the tripartate arbitrators have explred. The Northwestern will at once extend its Sioux Clty & Paocific west to Oheyenne, and Mr. Hughitt's trip to New York seems to be principally for the purpose of perfecting the arrangements for the construction of this new line. The Indications are that the Northwestern will have to make a slogle-handed fight sgainst all other lines, as the Burlington is likely to make common cause with the triparte roads and the Unlon Paclfic, aslt will be almost as sericusly affected by the Northwestern’s competing line through Nebraska as the Unlon Paclfic. A dlspo- sition has lately been shown on the part of the tripartite combinatlon tomake terms with the Burlington with a view to obtain the Jatter’s ald and co-operation in the conflict with the Northwestern. FERSONAL AND GENERAL. The U, P. is repairing its tracks, etc, all over its routes preparatory to the epriog trade. L. H. On Jane 9¢h next the Edltorial Asso- clation of Jowa will meet in Omaha to arrange for an excursion on the U. P. to Halley Idaho, and Oregon. Mr. James S. Bartle has been appoint- ed third assistant general freight agent of the B. & M., with headquarters at Chicago, the appointment to take effect May 1, 1885. The appointment of Mr. Holdrege as general manager of the B. & M. in Ne- braska, was announced in these columns yesterday, and information s now re- ceived of the promotien of Mr. H. B. Stone, formerly assistant general man- ager, to the positlon of general manager of the lines operated by the Burlington compsny east of the Misiouri river. The Tribune ssys, speaking ot the change: The appointments do not signify any radlcal change in the management of the Burlington, Vice-Presideut Potter slmply relinguishes the title of general manager, but he will continue in charge of the affairs of the Burlington’s lines both east and west of the Missourl river. The change sfmply relleves him of some of the defail work connected with the management of the company, and it en- ables him to devote more attention to its general affalrs.” e ————— B. H. Sir: I am instructed by the lleutenant general commanding the army to request you to direct that greater care be taken In the Inspection of Springfield rifles and carbines, He directs me to Inform you that in been condemned on account of an alleged wear of the rifling, or from a pre- sumed unservicaable condition due only to sevel years of ordl- nary use. Subsequent examination and extensive trials of many arms turned ln to the national armory for thess assumed defects, have almost without ex- ception shown that the rifling was not worn and that the accuracy of the plece, when fired, in comparison with new rifles was fully up to the standard, As with proper care in the preparation of reloaded ammunition, and the exclusive use of tho wooden cleaning rod, these arms will fully retaln thelr accuracy after much more than five years service and after firlng mapy thousand rounds, the lleutenant general directs that the as- pumptlon that therifle is worn, or the fact that the arms have been five or six years in service, should not, in _future, be consldered sufficient grounds for their condemnation.
