Smith, to be brought into court. Smith, while doubtless to be blamed for his summary way of got- ting rid of the annoyance, has nevertheless had a good deal to try hls soul. Young fellows have sent dogs ivto the water after sticks, etc., and when told not to have been saucy, and when Mrs, Smith has been alone there, have used Insulting language to her, The water-works company have spent con- siderable In beautifylng the grounds about the reservoir, so that the public might enjoy it asa park, but there was 80 many flowers stolen last season, and so many little depredations committed, that 1t seems the public has little gratitude. el et Artlste' Materialsat G, R, Beard’s Wall Paper Store. A Quiet Plan for & Board of Trade Enterprise, How It s to be Worked, It has leaked out that the board of trade of this clty Is talking quite serlously of putting up a large building, In which there will not only be accommedotions for the board, but numerous offices, the rental of which, 1t {s belioved, will pay well on the Investment. The plan Is belng worked up rather quletly, by a fow of the more active, enterprislng members of the organization, and the tcheme to them Is eald to look qulte practicable. The syndicate which has been talked abont so much as going to buy the Catholic church property Is now eald to be really , nothing more or less than a number of the lead- iog business men, who want to get thé site for this proposed board of trade building, While there seems to be con- slderable retlcence among those supposed to be leading in the enterprise, It appears that they belleve enough money can be raised to erect such a building, and that the rentals will amount to encugh or more than pay the interest on whatever sum it may bo necesssry to borrow to carry the enterprise to a successfal completion. The men who ate moving in the matter are sald to be a little more ready to go into it, from the fact that the board of trade, as an incorporated body is authorlzed by its charter to put up a bullding, and to assess 1ts members, It ia talked that the attempt will be mado to get as large an amount of voluntary investment as pos- slble, and then, 1n case of a delinquency, the balance be provided for by in- dividual assessments on the members. In this the mnembers, who want to go ahead will not be held back by thoss who are lacking In enterprise, and In fact can compel such to contrlbute their shara to the enterprise, pro- vided they are financially responsible It will be a surprise to a few of the thoughtless members of the board, who have never examined the constitution of |, the organization, to lesrn that the board {s thus authorized by law to build, if they choose to do 8o, and It {s thought a ma- jority vote In favor of bullding can be got at almost any meeting, as those who would not care to go into such an enter- prise, would naturally be the ones most apt to neglect attending. It Is whiepered that the matter s liable to be brought up at almost any meeting of the board—per- haps to-night. ——— The Telephones of Europe, The lngenieur publishes statistics of the telephone lines in operation in the different European countries at the ond of 1884, Tt appears from this statement that there has been a uniform Increase durlng the past year as compared with 1883: In Italy ten cliies possessed tele- phone llnes at the end of 1884, Inst the same numbar in 1883; but the num- ber of subecribers Increated from 3,710 in 1883 to 5,301 in 1884, an Increase of 30 per cent.
