The Mavor Says {hat Gambling Houses Must Close Froat Doors, The Order Enforced Yesterday After. noon—Plans for the Future, Mayor Boyd's first officlal order yester- day morning to the pollce was given to Marchal Cummings, It was an order to close the front doors of all gambling houses now running in this city, and with also a general mandate that no new ones shall open. Marsbal Cummings set to work In the afternoon and notified all proprictors of the new order, and hereafter the houses will not be run on_the ‘‘walk-into-my- parlor,-said-the-splder-to-the-fly" plan. A reporter called upon Mayor Boyd yesterdsy, and found that gentleman ready to converse upon this important and intereating subject of the gambling ovil and his futare plans relative thereto. “T Intend,” sald he, ‘‘to abate the evil of gambling in this clty. The marshal informs me that there ara now nine houtes ranning In fall blast. I do not think there ought to bo mors than four. The cream of tartar refiners of this country and Earope when apprcached upen the subject declare such a result impossible, and declined to incur the expendlture necessary to make the trial. The Royal Baking Powder Company, accordingly, resoled to solve the problem itself; and having secured the aid of the best chem- {sta of Earope and America, proceeded with its Investigation and dircoverles until the result, after several years of la- bor and the expenditure of over half a milllon dollars in the purchase of patents perfecting of processes, and the erection of buildings and inery, was reached in the complete attalnment of the end sought. A Brr reporter Iate Tuesday after- noon learned that a oase of small pox ex- isted in Omahs, and despite diligent enqulring made slow headway in learning the truth of the rumor, until at too late an hour to vlsit the person steicken. It may be stated upou testimony received by the reporter last aight that a fow days ago, negro camo to Omaha from Denver, Ool- orado, sffllcted with the diseass which he had contracted in Denver. On Monday night he was conveyed to the pest house from a room In a tenement house on Tenth and Davenport streete. This tenement occupled by several amilies of colored people who might avo boen endangered by the presence of the sick man, Dr. Lelsenring, city physiclan, went out to the pest-houte yesterdsy morning and examined the patlent, whose name is Oharlie Bayan. He pronounces the case o fully developed and dangerous one of small-pox, and the chances of recovery slight. Everything has been done for the sick man, however, and every atten- tlon will be pald to his comfort. ™, The doctor informed a reporter yester- afternoon that he did not think there was the the slightest danger of an epl- demic at present. He has taken atrict precautions to prevent the spread of the malady from this case, and the apart- ments occupied by the slck man have been thoroughly tumligated In order to rid them of the contaglous presence of the diseaso.
