The Cercmonies at St. Panl's Episcopal Charch Yesterday., An Eloquent Address by Bishop Perry, The Doings in Detail, Yesterday afternoon the ceremonies of laylng the corner stome of St. Paul's Eplscopal church took place at o'clock. The raw chilliness ot the alr preventad many from attending, and made 1t disagreeable for those who were there. There was a goodly aized gath- ering, and the ceremony was very inter- esting. At the appointed hour, the procession started from the rectory, next to the, church, marching to the foundation, sing- ingthe well known prooessional, ‘‘Onward Ohristlan Soldler.” Mr. Maxan, the architect, with the vestrymen and building committee led, then followed the cholr of children, a large number, and then the clergy, conslsting of Rev. John Willlams, D an Millspaugh of O a, Rev, James terson, Rev. Thom: hmlkn, and R. J. Mackay, rector of St. Pauls. The services opened with readlng the 122d Pealm and then the 74th, prayer following and then the stone was put in position by Martin Hughes, the contrac- tor. The following articles wasdeposited wixt)l ? it: ail Mayor v \?-ughln 's Messoge. City Directory, “Living Church,” Church Almanac, Prayer Book, Convention Rapnrt. Organiz Vesf of St. Paul’s Churgc)l. i Name of Architect and Building Com- mittee, The hymn “This Stone to Thee in Faith We Lay,” was then sung. Bishop Perry gave a brlef, very appro- priste and earnest address. In begin- ning he congratulated not only the par- Ishionera bat the people generally in this olty, on the fact that not only was this new bullding to be a center of spirituality and of moral helpfulness, but that it was tobea great addition to the beauty of the clty, Those who had by the laying of this foundation, and the preparing and planning, shown what they mean to do, rlchly deserve the congratulations and thanks of all. This building was not only to be a temple in which God would »|be worshipped in splrit and in truth, but would be such -an_addition to the number of beautiful buildings in this clty that when completed it would be one of which all citizens would be proud. He therefore commended the enterprise, and urged that every ald be rendered to accomplish the end, Which would prove a gratification to counclul ‘numbers, not only now, but those who, in the coming years, would look upon this temple. The lrchluct had done nobly. Rarely had he seen plans more beautiful or nt(aflc- tory, and he was assured that the build- ing would prove to this clty a thing of beauty and a joy forever. Tuarning from these aspects he then spoke of the doctrines and disclpline of the church. He laid stress vpon the fact that the church was preeminently a worshipplng church. When there came upon any due sense of his duty and his relationship to God, and the obligations of gratltude resting upon him, it will be- come man to bend his knee to the Father of all, True they came to hear the preacher draw lessons from the Book of God, but above all they came into God's presence to worship In sincerity and truth. The service coming down from the earlier ages idspired the worahip of God in the beauty of holiness] In prayer ' the language was used which for years and centurles had qulck- ened devotlons and as the revelation came that these words had been breathed in prayer for years past, and were laden with the saintliness of centurles gone, it was inspiring to the faith. The doctrine of the church was that narrated simply i in the Apostle’s Creed. It was of man’s creatlon but of God's leading. It held forth the Savior as the creator of truth, and was the simpllclty of the gospel as taught and lived by Christ, "It embraced the great clrcle of Christlan teaching, with Christ as the center. The youngest was included in this simple doctrinal system, and to the oldest there was food for the greateet intellect. He then gave some interesting historic- al accounts of the start ef the church in this country, and alluded to the growth of the church in eloquent words, pictur- lng 1v as having spread all over the world and making its name known everywhere. In closing he expressed agsin his joy at thls evidence of incressing Interest and he prayed that it might continue. He urged all to use efforts and prayers that zealous, gencrous support might be glven to the cnterprise, which would be surely blessed of God, for it God'’s house, where he would dwell and where hewould delight to be honored. The hymn was then sang, as a closing, “Une‘Fuund on in Jesus Christ the Lord.” e —— Artlsts' Mate) it G, R. Beard's Wall Paper Store, Send for price list. —e— BADLY SOLD. The Girl's Brother Shows Up to an Infatuated Young Man, Two young men, telegraph operators by occupation, a short time sgo were drumming on a piano at their boarding house, and the young daughter of the landlord, a girl about fifteen, soon after coming into the room closed the piano, not liking the thumping. One of the young men thought the actlon a queer one, and taking some offense at it, wrote a note to thegirl, but his chum smuggled it and In a femenine hand wrote a reply, A gorrespondence was thus started up, the {nnocent youth supposing all the time that the girl was his fair correspondent, while his room-mate was quletly carryiog on the deceit, and chuckliog over his fuo, A few days ago the brother of the girl|™ waa let into the secret, and a scheme was devised for etill farther entangling the upg man, A meeting was arranged for {elwaen the young man and the girl, and in this meeting the brother was dressed up to represent the fair one, The deceplion was so perfect that the young man had hugged the manly form undngllud the mascaline cheek several times without dlscoveriog the plot. It strikes me that these two dignitaries are somewhat leather-headed, for If the morality of Monaco Is injured by the gsmbling establishments, surely it is eminently desirable that facilities should be afforded for penltents, and also for those who are as yet untainted.
