6 THE DAILY BEE COUNCIL BLUFFS. Wednesday Mornine, Avril 8, RATES, SUBSCRIPTION RATES. e woek « §10.00 per yoar & OFFIOR! 12 Pearl Street. "MINOR MENTION, Bernhard-Llstemann concert April _11. Two Jakes, the barbers, 402 Broadway. The pablic drinking fountalns are now to be opened up, « Wickham's brick yard will be started ap next weok. The shot tower s to be transformed in- toa palnt manafactory. et | Max' Mohn, of the Creston ' House, fools pretty proud of his fire encape, jand woll he may be, as it 1s tho only one in the city. The police, who sold thelr warr terday, got $52.50 for their month's ry, which 1s nominally put at $70 a month. A park for Strestsville Is belog m‘gad by the residents of that part of the city, and the move scems to meet with favor among many of the taxpayers. Conner and Wilson, who were arrested for burlarizing Cooper & McGee's hard- ware store, were yesterday bound over to the district court in the sum of $300 each. The wrooking of a frelght train on the C. M. & St. Paul yesterday obstruoted the track 8o that the morning train was delayed, not arrlving until 8 o'clock last evening. The olty council is to make a final set- tlement next Monday evening with Regan Bros & McGorisk for the paving of Broad- way and Maln streets, the work belng now completed. This afternoon at 4 o'clock the corner stone of St. Paul's Eplecopal church will be lald, Blshop Perry officiating, and this evening there will bea confirmation of a claes of about thirty. The county board yesterday was con- sldering road matters, making as usual one of the busiest days of the session, as a large number of witnesses, complain- ants and petltioners have to be heard, The following have been elected ves- trymen of St. Paul's church for the com- ing year: D. O. Bloomer, W. J. Han- cock, A, W. Street, J. N. Baldwin, H. 0. Corey, John T. Stewart, Thongas Bowman, M. Duquette, Horace Everett. P. D. Booth, who was charged by his wife with having been too famillar with Pearl Shaw, appeared before Justlce Hendrlcks yesterday for trial, but his wife did not appear to prosecute and he was dlscharged. A large number of citizens of Silver Oroek township are expected to appear in in Justice Hendrick's court to-day to teatify in the case of the Wickersham boys, who are charged wlith aseaulting an old man named Bolton. The auditor was busy yesterdsy issulng warrants in pasyment of the bills allowed ho pravious evening by the clty council. There was only one purchaser present, and he was only paying 76 cents on the dollar. Some sold at that figure, A. J. Martin, Fred Haoson, and P. Sweeney were arrested yesterday for hauling dirt away from the bank of the creek, near the Tremont house, the dirt |k huving been thrown up for the purpose of protecting from overflow, Thelr cases wera continued until to-day. The county board will probably let all amall-pox bills go over to the meeting on May, 14th,” It Is purposed to hsve a spociel half day devoted to hoarlng what each one of the claimants has to say, so that light may be thrown on all the bills, and then actlon taken at once, The reporter's table and chairs at the oouncll chamber have been 8o occupled by outsiders that the power of the press has boeen brought to bear upon the oity fath- ers, who promise now to have the cause of the complaint removed, and give the the ‘shovers of the penell a chanco to write up their dolngs, Capt. Philllp Loeflel, one of the old and well-known cigar makers, as well as a vallant vetoran, has entered the employ of M, 8, Benuner, who has started a neat Little cigar shop with a nice stock, at Nob. 346 Broadway, where the Eagle Chop House wa Mr, Toller, of the merchant tailoring oatablishment of Smith & Toller, lost a fine overcoat at the dance at the rink Mondsy night, some one lesving a well worn one and old coat in its place. The erenceln the garments thus exchanged strengtliens the bellef that It was a case of sneak-thleving. The Bernhard Listeman concert com- pany which is to appear here next Satur- day evening will be & munical treat which none can afford to miss. The national roputation already won places the enter- tainment among the rare opportunities offered to Council Bluffs, There is danger of the Intersection of Blaff and Pierce streets being under- mined by the digging awsy of the bluffs, The crumbling caused by the digglug and carrying awsy of dirt hs already begun to encroach on the street, and unless care Is taken it will cut fn still further, The heavy rain of yesterday mornlng did some washing awsy cf ditt, especlally in the newly-filled pact of the city, The water and mud is reported as haviog besn washed somewhst Into the base- wmeat of the Congregaticnal church. That church ls below grade, and its basement exposed to damage, now that the streets above It are ralsed, Sowme steps will doubtless soon be en t raise the charch or in some other way protect It. Liadies' to conanlt their bést Interlst will awalt the opening of the new milll- nery establishment of Mrs, O. A, Rogers, 341 Broadway. The slarm of ffre last evening was caused by the burning of a little old hous® on Plerce street in the rear of the Ogden house, loss about $100, Those who circulated the petitions for the closing of the saloons say that they fonnd many business men and property owners who expressed sympathy with the move but declined to siga because they had no confidence In the olty adminlatra. tion doing anything about the matter. This they glve as ons of the rearons for the smallnees of the number of signers. Col. Daily has recelved an Invitation to accompany a large number of other prominent and valisnt voterans who will start from Washington May 4 for a visit to the old battle-field of Gettysburg. The Colonel is thinking strongly of ac- copting the Invitatlon and making the trip, which to him especlally would be of thogreatest personal Interest, Yesterday afternoon L. Williams filed an Information before Justlee Schurz, charging a neighbor named Roberts with ultlng him. The trouble seems to have arisen about a pet sheep which the Roberta’ had,and which Willlams clalmed had been running at large and had been damaging some of his nursery stock so that he appealed to the marshal to put the eheep In the pound. Willlams claims that young Roberts was a little full yes— terday and meetlng him charged him with trylng to get the sheep taken up, and then struck him. Dr. Frisble, of Des Molnes, lectured in Masonic hall last evening. His de- scription of the sights and experlences of his visit to Alaska was very vivid, and portions of the lecture were grand. All who, under the gulde of his clear thought and well chosen words took the trip with him last evening, must have gained much valuable information, and atthe same time had a most enjoyable entertaln: ment, Dr. Frisbie has now the reputa- tion of belng one of the ablest divines in his denomination, and even those who bad formed high expectations, but had never heard him, were not disappointed last evening. George Beulah and John G. O'Brler, strangers In the city, had a lively racket at Motcalf’s saloon. Itseems that thoy had a common fund, which they were spending In a twin spree, and a dispute arose a8 to who should carry the bag, and be treasurer, which resulted in thelr coming to bloody blows and getting ar- rested. The money only amounted to a little over $2, and thelr quarrel as to who should carry it resulted in exch belng fined §0 60, a rather expensive financial settlement. They will have to board it out, their oaly other effects being some new cheap jewelry, which they clalm to have bought in Omaha. ol e Artlsts’ Materials at G, R, Board's Wall Paper Store. A Swloon Man iIn Harrison County Tired of Jail Life, A writ of habeas corpus was applied for in the saperlor court yesterday, the petition sett'ng forth In substance that John C. Heury had been fined $500 under the prohibitory law, and committed to jail in Harrlson county, for a term of 150 days unless the fine and cosis were sooner pald. After remaining thirty days in jail he made a schedalo under the poor man’s act, showing that he had no prop- erty, and then executing his note In favor of the coutity for 8622, he demanded re- lease. Sherlff Garrison refused to rele him and then he made aflidavit to these facts, and applied to Judge Aylesworth of the superior court here for ralease on a writ of habeas corpus.
