THE DAILY BEE---THURSDAY, APRIL 2. 1885, THE WORKING MEN. e Laborers and Horny-Handed Mect in Convention and Nominate a Ticket, Murphy Endorsed Amid a Whirl of Enthusiasm, "“No Use for Gatling Guns,” Full Account of the Proceadings, At 7 o'clock Iast evening the city coancll room was packed with men who cowded one upon another for standing room to witness the proceedings of the workingmens’ convention, called for the nemination of candidates for clty offices At 7:40 o'clock Mr. McGinn ealled order and proceeded to read the call wblished. Ed. Asponwall was made temporary chalrman, and James Lynch temporary secretary. A motion was made to have the con- ventlon move to the Academy of Musle, but after much wrangling and a pla'n effort to get control of the conven- tion by persons who figured throughout the subsequent proceedings, the conven- tlon by a large majority refased to go to the Academy of Musie, saying tha it wai a job, The house was jammed with outsldera, and a long scene of confuslon and dis- order ensued, which became almost in tolerable, when officers were called on to make the ‘‘lobby,” who were outvoting the delegates, go outside, A committee on credentlals consisting of Brown, Allen, Trott, Tracy, Young and Simpson was appointed, and with a Jarge bundle of papers of credentials loft the hall, A motlon was put debarring any man who had been a participant in either the democratic, citizens’ or republican con- ventlon from a geat in this conventlon, Upon this motion a scene of noise ana confasion followed that need not beyde- seribed. The matter, after long and lond talking, was quleted by layiog aside the whole question until "the committee on credentials should report, and It was not mentioned agaln. Somebody called Mullhall for a epeech, He took the stand and sajd he hoped that when the body adjourned, their action would show that they did not need bayonets to keep them in subjsotion and order, o8 had been sald of them by the president of the citizens’ convention that nominated Jas. E. Boyd. Sach a state— ment was an Insult to every man who works, and yet men asked workingmen to vote for the man who dideo. He con- tinved, and made & call en the body to say if anyons of them ‘‘forgets the mur- derof Armatrcng” four years ago, whon Boyd_had troops and pumpkin-rollers fron Wahoo brought here to help the railroad corporation snd do Swrong :to labering men. Continuing ia ‘this steain he closed his high-pitched harangue, and was followed by a Mr. Lowls, who under- trok to explain the ‘‘modus operandi” by which, if he told of the characters of cither Boyd or Murpby, hs would injuro both, and after this great announcement sub- sided for the time belng, Mr. Quinn was called for and willingly ook the stand, but desplte his most evi- dent wish to spoak was met by such a loud and continuous storm of “yells and hoo's that he hal finally to get off, not a word of whatever he might have had to say having been hoard. At this stage it was very evident that Murphy had a large majority of the dele- gates triondly to nim, and the opposition then began a systematic plan of delsy, and efforts to adjourn, And for throo- quatzers of an hour pandemonium pre- valled among delegates and lobby. Finally the committee on credentials re- ported, and about ore hour was spent, in wrangling over thelr rapozt and reading it. Daring this tlme the police wera re- quosted again to clear the lobby, but the yollers stood firm and finally the dolegates entitled to seats were declared to be representatives of tha fol- lowing societles: horseshoers, sewer gang, shoemakers, eheetiron workers, plumbers, butchare, warehousemen, box-makers, cornlce-workers, colored c'tlzans, tailors, palnters, graders, job work, book binding, etc., non-unlon carpenters, U. The report of the committee was at last adoptsd and}‘heltemporary crganization made per- mauent, Immediately upon this a motion to adjourn was made and lost amid hoots and confuslon, 1t being noticeable that a small minority were chiefly actlve in thess bo'sterous proceedings evary time, Finally theregularorder of business was ordered when Morrow nominated John Boyd Eaq., amid cheers and hisses and grosns. Tracy as bolsterously nom- inated B, F. Murphy, and, at the men- tion of bis name, the very walls seemed to tremble. When the shriekers were out of wind a sene of confasion ensusd and the police were ordered to pat the disturbaers of the out. Mr, Murphy was t.he:l cll:u-ly hnomlnud!«l by s viva vocs vole, but the Bo, ople eas: forced a ballot order onyth-p:nl:ir nm{ confation within and the crashing of thunder and flashing of lightning ous side. Exactly forty-seven minutes wers con- sumed in taking the ballot after once it arted, and resulted: Boyd, 45; Mur- phy 90 voter, nominating Murphy by ex- actly two to one. Cheer after cheer greeted this result, and Mr, Murphy was sent for, Meoantime the cinvention proceeded, after it had yelled itself hoarse, to nomi- nate an AUDITOR: E. K. Long and Dr, Lewis were nomi- nated. Lowis was finally nominated, He at once went on the stand and msde a haravgue, chiefly notable for its long- windedness, Nominations for POLICE JUDGE were made, Wetss and Stenburg belog put before the convention, To expedite matters the honors were divided, when Justice Stenburg was nominated by a '-nod mjoriz and it was made unanl- mous. At this rolnt Mayor Murphy ap- peared amld applause. Hon. P, F. A RIVER SERPENT. The Wonderful Sight Witnessed in the Missouri Yesterday. A sirange sight was witnessed in the wators of the Missourl yesterday-—on calculated, indeed, to fill the heart of thee observer with feelings of wonder and dis- may. Itisnothing less thana meran- guthaneam giganteum,—a genalne river serpent. Aboat eight o’clock yesterdsy morning the alert denizens of the river bottoms spied, floating far away up the rlve huge black object, round and apparently, in length, some forty or fifty fest. The specalation among the ignorant and un- sophisticated spectators as to the what- ness of the apparition was of the keenest and wildest dsscription. Many were in- clinod to believe that it was the carcass of a Din.o Museum whale; others that It was the escaped sole of a Counci] Blafls girl’s shoe; while others were beilingeven that it was a sectlon of the tail of Tom Murray’s black nag. Others of a more philosophileal bent hit upon the right theory that the object was a rlver serpsnt. The alarm was quistly given, and large nambors of peopls came flock- ing to the shores of the Big Muddy, to witness the woaderful sight. By tho time the rerpent had reached a point about half a mlle above the waterworks, the bauks for two miles up and around the river wore lined with spactators. Slowly the merangu thbaneum gizanteum hove into slght. Clote inepsction (with spy glass) dieclosed the fact that it was about fitty feet In length, with a skin very black and covered with ecales, cach about two fest in superticlal area, of an cllipsofdal form, acd with = color, which may be described as a light carulesn, Toward the head, the body tapered down considerably, so that at the bass of the animal's skull ths thickness did not excoed five feat. Two upright ears, of about eightean inches length, a cavernous and tvorg-bedecked mouth, hugo glassy eyes of a flaming red—com- pleted the matn feutures of the beast's nead, The tail of the animal wes about three feet in length, without the blue ecaloe, and traverssd up and down by finny bars, aud terminating in an ar- rangemont something like a Maltase cross, A committee of Inepaction, con- slsting - of Coroner Drexel, James Crelghton, Mayor Murphy and C, 8. Goodrlch, togethar witha reporter of this joutnal procursd a boat and made a close 1aspection of the eqaatic phenom- enon, noting & number of facts, smong which the foregoing have been given. The data are in poesession of Coroner Drexel, in casethe exigencles of the oc- casion should at any fatare time necessi- tato an inquest. B BULLETINS, 1230 p. m.
