The sanset supplement of the old Iady’s scrapbook says the water works at the olty bullding are out of gear. The only trouble 1s, as reported by the en: glnoer, is that an excess of aqua In the compressor cansed It to overflow, filling the pneumatic tube, while polarization settiog in, the aqua congealed. Boland, andin a short time thereafter the doors of the Audubon county jail were opened and Pater Ryan, charged with the murder of Kleever, came forth, and will remain at liberty until the August term of the Audubon county court, for which time his trial is set. Ryau stayed in Audubon, sleeping at the Walker house, Thursday pight, and Fridsy came to Atlantic. He was a caller at this office, and leit the impression with us that a murder— ous thought would have difficalty In find- ing a lodgment in his breast. He has erown pale from his confinement, but otherwise exhibits no bad effect there- from. He thinks some of the newspapers have treated him harshly, especlally those that have paioted bim as a red-handed desperado, never quailing until the cer- nival of mob law which hanged and killed Jellerson, Smyth and Wileon, was at its height. Ho expressed himself as very grateful tp the part of the press that has treated him falrly, and says that all he wants is a fair show and a chance to prove his innocence, which he has not the least doubt he can do. If Rysn Is Innoceut, and thers are|6 50, many circumstances in the case tending to prove that he is, we sincerely hope that he will bave no difficulty in remov- ing from his hands the stains of homan blood which it s alleged have been found upon them. He will remaln In this county until he trial, and will be there when the case s called, so he says, and we do not doubt Atlantic Democrat. ‘THE DAILY BEE--COUNCIL BLUFFS FRIDAY, MARCH 27, 1885, COLD WATER ORATORY, The (Temperance Revival Progress, Now in The presence in the city of Mr. George Woodford, of Illinols, the temperance worker and orator, has created much In terest. There was some prejudice ex- cited by the report that he had come here to lead the prohibitioniats In an ac- tlve fight to close the saloons by Injunc- tions under the recont decition of the supreme court, The fact that the ren- dering of this declsion was imme- dlately followed by Mr. Woodferd’s ap pesrance In the city, gave color to the report, but It seems that arrange. ments for his coming were made last January and the t'me fixed, without any regard to the recent decision, the pur. pose being to have a temperance revival, and get as many to take the pledge a8 vn crow«lx d houses, and his addresses have been fn- teresting to saint and sinner slike, He has a wonderful fund of anecdotes and illustrations and he knows well how to use them, 8o that he holds the attention of hiw hearers closely, and presses his points home cleverly. He tackles the temperance qutstion from all points, and there is great variety in his methods of treating 1t. His talke to boys show that he has been a boy himeelf, and that he bas not forgotten it. He is very earnest, a rapid speaker, and with all his enthusiasm is not eo one- sided and unreasonable as many who ap- pear before the public in a like capacity. He 1s what Is termed a reformed man, having himself been addicted to drink for many ye Mr. Woodford will remain here therest of the week and hold meetings each evening in the Presbyterlan church. A large number of persons have signed the pledge tbut how many have been drinkers, 1t is not easy to determine, as under his policy, all are urged to s'gn, whether they are in the habit of drink- ing or not, the sober to glve help and In- couragement to those who are not sober, Death of Sister Mary Nicholas, Death seems to have marked the alster- hood of 8t. Francls academy for its vic- tlms, Within a few months two worthy members of the order have been called from earth, and yesterday afternoon the immortal spirlt of Sister Mary Nicholas, the mother superior, joined the heavenly hosts. She had been aillng about three months, and the efforts and skill of the best medical men to stay the progress of the disease were unavailing. Surrounded by many frlends, the minlsters of the church and her sorrowlng brother and sister, the last hours of life were peaceful and painleas. Motber Nicholas was a model type of a noble order of educators. Possessing a thorough education, uncommon ability as a manager and a gentle, winning disposi- tion, she made St. Francts academy one of the best young lady teminaries in the west, The growth of the institution in the last few years has been very great, and to the coneequent increase of labor s due her early demise. The announce- ment of her death will sené a pang to many a home, not only in Council Bluffs and Omahs, but tn surronnding towns and citles, and tears will spring unhidden to the eyes of scores of young ladies who had known, loved and revered her as a mother, The funeral will take place Saturiay morning at 10 o'clock. ———— The New Church. The work on the new Kplscopal charch will proceed this meason, and it is be- lleved that the liberality and enterprise of the members and friends will result in the putting up of & building which will be a credit to the city as well as to the charch organization.
