A Baby with the “ Big Heaa” and a Fretty Woman Filled with Thun- der and Lightming—A Shock- ing Girl, Apromicent physician yesterday called a BEE reporter’s attention to a singular freak of nature, now on exhibition at the Dime Museum, and advised him to ex- amine it. Going to the roem the report- er met Mrs. Cross, who held a emall child about three yesrs old, perfectly well formed, in good health, of the best dispositicn at all times, with perfectly clear mental powers, and only suffering with a blg head. And the child’s heed is a rouser. His hoight is 3 feet 4 inches, snd his head is 32 inches in clrcumfer- ence, It is by no means pleasant tolook at, by reason of its disproportion to the body of the little fellow. While there, among other curlosities was seen a wonderfal lady, Mrs, Addie Patterson, nee Bradley, of West Vir- ginia. Mrs Patterson is s petite blcnde, sged nineteen, with pretty facs, pecu- liarly winping smile and affable and cheerfal, She is a ccndensed thunder- cloud, emlitting lightning-fleshes at all times, which are occaslonally accom- pacied by explosions like thunder. She says in damp weather she seems to lose this property or power, but 1t accumu- lates in dry weather until she is so charged with elcctrlo power that she can light a lamp or gas jet with her finger, or with an icicle beld in her haund. That she can is true, though she says after very meny parscns bave been shocked by her she grows weak and feefs tired and worn out. The preity lady had a very plessant chat with the roporter and showed him that her re- | when " a tweon Harnoy and Farnam etreots, about tho hour named, with her husband, & man appreachod and placed his band on her arm, Wlhen he did so, George asked if ho had not made a mistako and at tho samo time struck at and knocked the man down. He at onco aroso, drew his pistol and fired at Gecrge, the bullet penctrating his rear and en'ering the fiesh, and not at midnight found by Dr Hyde, who was called to attend him. When the first shot was fired, hitting George, he pulled his pletol also, but it failod to fico, only snapp'ng. The man who fired immedlately fired again three times, the first of thesc three shots (belng the second shot) struck George in tho arm above tho olbow, the othor grazod his wrist and the last missed him entire- ly. It was neerly dark. The man ran ol and bid in a saloon, but was subeequently, on the seccnd saarch of the polico, found and proved to be Dr, Omar Morghner, Ho was arrosted, but gave bail, by order of Justics Woiss, for his appesrance to.day. This is George's version of tha circumstances. Tha doctor’s etory 1a that he was passing tho place named; a woman mat him and epoke; he offered her his hend, man jomped from the dark and struck him a heavy blow, knocking him down. It was total- ly uncxpected, as he did not know who it was until after the shooting. As soon as he could, he fired at the fellow who struck him with the result stated. There seems to be a cat in the mealtub somewhero about thls tning which it may be the hearing will cause to jomp. The statements given are as nearly as possible tho versions of the affalr glven by iho parties, and as such gives them—and res one more bloody dsed since the BEE's reporter thus Sundsy morning Jast. ———— THE BATTLE OF THE CRATER. Graphic Acconnt of the Sprioging of the Petershorg Mise. How Near the Movement Came to Causing Great Disaster to the Confederates and Why It Failed—The Fierce Fight After the Explosion. ‘Written for the National Republican, The weather around Potersburg about the close of July, 1864, was awfully Lot —too hot to do anything comfortably but lie In the shade and uee a fan—and ye! It was made much hotter for the confeder- ate troops by the inconslderate activity of Gen. Grant'sarmy both north and south of the James river. On tha north slde the fighting had reached the dignity of a ba'tle, for considerabla bodles of troops had been engaged on bhoth sides aud the federal forcas had succeeded in takiog some redoubts and rifle pi's on the outer line of defense, and were able to hold on to them. meant in front of the Richmoend defenses we were s0on to find ont. For wecks lines to visit Petersburg were foll of talk in the provost marshal's office—a placa of general rendezvous: OF MINZS AND COUNTERMINES in course of construction in and aboat the forls on the outer line, and the artillery officers in particular, whose batteries were planted in these forts, appesred to feel deep inferest In the subject, as It is not pleasant “'to well they might, slecp over a voloano,” as the saying goes, and to contemplate the possibility of taking an involontary flight skyward before one could say ‘‘Jack Robinson.” The element of uncertainty and sue- to the moat cour- ageous—was acded, for while it was well pensa—very trying was yen- placs What there demonstrations the cfficers who got 8 twelve hours' lease of absence from the Indicatad that the much-talked-of mine had beon explodad at lent, and | noed weatcoly romark that It was o “*bad quar ter of an honr" for s as we listened to 1t, for no one con'd undertake to foretell tho frmae. Now, the depot propor, near Pocalionfas bridge, and the track for a mile or two toward Richmond were in point-blank range of the enomy's bat torios, 8o wo had establialied a tompor- ary dopot some two miles from the 'ty under the shel cr of a rango of hills. The weiter had boeen given dispatches at Richmond with Inatructlons to de'iver them without a moment's delay. The only way I could get to Petersburg the country on foot, for no n betweon the depot and the olty tnat morning. Thinking that tho hostile batteries, then being hotly en gaged with thelr opponents would not probably notice the locomotive, 1 pro posed to Capt, Daniel, the conductor, to DETACH THE ENGINE FROM THE TIAIN, and ran mo down to tho old depot. Af- ter some henitation he consented, and #o did the englneer and fireman, after | had explained the necessity of a «uick deliv- ory of what might bo virtually fmportant dirpatches. Wo mounted the cab and oracklng on all tteam were moon oiislde the shelter of the hills, and the federal gunnors, in_spito of the rmoke about them, eapled us aa soon, and they lot into un right and left and with such go-d afm that some vital part of the machine was broken, and It jomped tho track, throw- ing un all info a stegnant frog pond by the roadside. No one was much hart and we hastened to ecramblo out of range. Whon I got to the provost marshals office in the town with the diepatches they scarcely recognized me, as [ hsd lost my het in the adventurs and was covered with mud and frog spawn from head to foot. It wasy no time for cere- mony cr to stop to clean off After brushing up a little, and the battle still being jolned, the notre of it thundering in our ears, I got permission from the provest marshal to ¢o up the old Bland- ford church hill to witvess the fight. When I got thero but little was to bo seen except smoke, amld which the dim forms of men could be seen moving about like ghosts. An it was not my duty to expote myself by a nearer approach to the fzhting line, I returned to the pro- vest marshal’s office to await develop- ments. From a survivor of the garrizon of the fort blown up and from others I after- ward learned that THE STORY OF THE BATTLE was In brief as follows: A short time be fore the day of the epringing of the mine the confederate engineers had prapared a countermine, and as the oppoaing miners could hear the picking and blows of each other, and the no'ss from the federal sap- pers had ceased, It was thought that the scheme bad been abandoned, but the federal miners were experts from the Pennsylvania coal region, and they man- aged to dig noiselessly under the counter- mine and run their galleriea all about under the bottom of the fort. Sald this surveyor in my hearing: ‘*‘You re2, we had felt eary since the countermine was dog, snd the men of the battery were scattered about lying down under the shelters or cooking their Jobscouse, All of a sudden I felt as if somebody HAD HIT ME WITH A CLUB and kicked me behind at the same time, and then I felt myself golng up. and I re. member no more until I came to ia the hospital.” This soldier was badly bruised and ehecked, and owed his_preservation to the fact that he was stsnding near the outer edge of tha central force cf the ex- plosion. As soon as the mine was fired the federal batteries slmultaneounsly opened, and a divition cf troops sprang over the breastworks in the charge. The confederates for some distance on elther elde cf the crater made by the exploston, recoiled at fisst in disorder but quickly rallled and opened wpon the aivanc- ing enemy with every cannon snd mifle that could be brought to baar. Now, had the first charginz line of the enemy been closely followed by & second and a third in close order they would have had & better show for breaking the confederate Jine and taking it in flauk and rear, but this was not the cas:; or had the attack been mwade at 4 a, m., as intended, it might have gone hard with us; bat it seems (a8 we sfterward learned) that the explosion which was ordered at 4 a m. was deferred by defects In the fuse lead- ing to the mines from mismsnageuent, and possibly, as more than one federal historlan hints, by cowardice on the par: of scme of the euberdinate ofticers who y of them w DLUBBERING LIKE WHITTED BOYH, They were immentely relloved when Maj.
