Relter's new spring goods, The supreme court opens here on St. Patrick’s day. There is to be a grand mazquerade ball at Loveland March 17. R. H. Beecroft s out with the ‘‘tony” exprees rig of the clty. The Odd Fellows will soon fit up fer their occupancy the third floor of Dahany's opera house. The residence of F. W. Spetman, Bluffs street, Is being raised five or slx feet by W, P, Aylaworth, Tramps are getting very numerous, and in soms cases qulte troublesome in the resident parta of the city. Riley Olark, the justice at Neols, has dismissed the petty sult recently brought before him against Justice Schurz. J. J, Dickey & Son propose soon open- ing up a grocery store in Danforth’s new brick block, on lower Broadway. The street car company is not keeplng ita promise to run up Broadway to Madi- non street, and a petition ls being eclrou- lated as & reminder of the pledge. J. 8. Casworth, of Boomer township, and Miss Harrlet Roberts, of Hazel Dell, were yesterday marrled by Justice N. Schurz in his magisterial parlors, Complaint is mads that dirt wagons 99 are running over the sldewalk near the [ Mind Congregatlonal church, making it almost impassable for pedestrfans without rub- ber boots. The express lines do not like the order {ssued by the clty marshal forbidding them to stand on Maln and Broadway. They propose to get the comncil to re- sclnd the order. As I will positively close my business March 3lat, I offer my stock of books statlonery, fancy goods, notions and store fixtures at a great sacrifice. H. E. Seaman, No. 341 Broadway. The Ancient Order of Hibernlans are making preparations which will ensure the succees of the grand ball in Masonle hall Tuesday evening, March 17. A large number from Omaha are expected to participate. g *‘Why don't we get ordera to pull the cappers and pluggers that are laying around town? (I just counted ten of them between Bryant and Main stredts a8 I came along.” This is the unofficial report of one of the policemen yesterday. Albert Lewis about a year ago while herding cattle got accldentally shot with his own revolver, the ball entering the log and remainlng there. It graduslly worked down. and yesterday was cut out of his heel by Dr. Bellinger, assisted by Dr. Spaulding, of Omaha, Chas, Dacy Ed. Dougherty, who belong somewhere near Crescent, were 8o elated over the prospeot of a new court house that they got some of Councll Bluffs’ fighting whisky into them. It cost them $7.60 each yesterday morning to make the thing rfght. The *‘ring” game is belng played on some verdanty about the depots. The sharper 1s of course pinched financlally, must borrow a little msney, and thinks so much of the ring that he would not put it up at a pawn shop. It costs the sucker from fifty cents to a dollar to learn that allis not gold that glitters, The Ice was cleared out of the river enough yesterday so that Tue Bee startod up its ferry boat to bring the pa- per over to its Councll Bluffs readers, It 1s to be hoped that there will not be many mors mornings this spring when there will be any delsy in getting Tue Bee dellvered in Councll Bluffs at the usual early hoar, Yesterday a large number of depos!- tlons In the Oross case on the part of the defense were filed with the clerk here, they balng mostly from the east, in re- gard to Dr. Cross’ previous character, The rames are: Wilbur P, Morgan, John K, Cowen, John T. 8mith, George Brooks, Ammon Cate, G. W, Whitten- berger, G, 8. Jones, W. W. Whittock, George Oary, J. Franklin Dix and O, J, Coskrey. The depositions will be for- warded to Glenwood to-day. The Returns Grow Better and Better, The returns on the court house elec- t'on, #o far as received up to the time of Tue Bee golng to press yesterday morn- ing, indicated, as then annonnced, that the proposition for building a new court house and jail had oarried by at leaat 1,000 majority, The returne, as they came in yesterday, showed gains ali around, and left It evident thatat the leatt the proposition had been carrled by 2,000 majority. This settles the mat- ter beyond all chance for quibble er doubt, and those who have fought the propositions in the vain hope cof de- feating them, and thus getting an enter- ing wedge for an ultimate divislon of the cyuntry, will' bave to remaln satistied with this expression of the people. There is no uncertain sound in this trampet- blast of the people. It means build a decent court house and jail, The vote, 8o far as rcseived yesterday, showed as followa: Jail. THE DAILY BEE--THURSDAY, MARCH 12, 1885. one of the stronger ;nmates of the poor house, beoause on ;mlng asked to get rome water from the well the old man su;geated that his eyesight was so dim ana his ttrengyh wes eo feeble, that some one else could get it easler. The old man says that on making the remark he was felled to the floor by a brutal blow. Such a sad showing cf life needs no comment., e — PERSONAL. Wi, Brix still liips on account of a sprain ed ankla, Mr. John Gillespie is quite ill with hemor- rhage of the lungs, Bob Koonz came in from the farm yester: pay looking hale and hearty. Miss Sackville, of Omaha, has taken a posi- tion in Hospe's music store here, He has in the B. BB, Mann is in the city sgain, been working successfully in Kan life insurance line, Charles E, Taylor who has been running the “‘night engine” at the transfer for several yeara is now working the throttle on the “day engine,” H. M. Pickell, president of the Guaranty Life Association of Des Moines, was in the city yesterday and made arrangements with B. 15, Mann to represent the above company. Supervisor Robert Kirkwood was at fthe Pacific yesterday, He says that he is glad that there is large enough majority on the court house question to make it clear what the people want, . Ben Austin who has been off the police force on a leave of absence returned yesterday from Virginia whero he went to visit hls relatives, He reports his father, sister and brother all in very ill health. Will J. Trotlbr, of the Avoca Delta, was in the city yesterday, and left for home satisfied that the court house and jail propositions had carried by at least 1,200 majority, He didn’t . | smile as widely as a year ago, Col. John Lindt has returned from the oast, He has been visiting his old home in i | Pennsylvaniv, where he was called by the ill- ness of his sister, who died and was buried during his stay thero, She had been ill for a year past, and confined to her bed and suffer- 'he above returns leave a majority of 2,662 for the court house and 2,918 for the jail, but several townshlps not heacd from will cut down this majority. Ad- mitting that these townships cast as strong a vote sgainst the court house as they did last year there would needs be deducted from the above figures the fol- lowlng : 275 184 150 609 This would leava a majorlty of 2,063 for the court house, It is evident therefore that the only question now is how great the majority will ultimately foot up. ———— Beckman & Co., 5256 Maln street, will wash and oll your harness cheap now, e —— A SAD STORY. An Oid Man at the Poor Farm Dying Broken Hearted, Deserted By His Wife and Deprived of His Property, One of the saddest sights at the poor farm is that cf an old man, whoss gray halr, wan face, bowed form and despalr- ing look cannot but excite sympathy. The old man sits in a dreamy atate or rather as If stunned by some great grief, and the history of his life corroborates his appearance as that of a man who is slowly dying of a broken heart, He gives his name as Nicholas Kern, and when aroused to talk of himself he fre- quently burts into tears, and then sub- sldes agaln into a quiet, sad reflection, until aroused by another query, The old man 18 quite deaf, and hls hearing is gradually growing worse. His eyesight, too, has falled him until he can hardly see anything, snd with frequent moans he exprestes the fear that the dark- ness which s gatherlng about him will soon shut out every ray of light. “‘Then what sball I do,” sighed the old mau, “‘blind, deaf, without a frlend, no money, and my wife and daughter goue,” and the tears and sobs prevent further utterance of worda. 1t seems from the old man’s story that domettic trouble lies at the bottom of it all, He says that another man won his wily [fections, prajudiced bis daughter sgainst him, and that last June this man with his wife and daughter left the city together, and he believes they are living together, but wherae he cannot learn, He mourns greatly over this, and holds to the doubtless vain delusion that if he could but find out where his wife Is 80 that he could write her, he could get herback sgaln, He says he had a little property, but this was slipped out of his hands, and his wife got possesslon of it. Butgreat as is his grief over the falthlessness of his wife, he mourns still mora deeply over the fact that his little daughter has gone too, he o'd men's beart scems wrapped up in the girl, and In his faillng days he misses the presence and cheer of the Hght young heart. With his other finfirmities, the old man's mind seems to be giving away, and he s becoming dazed lns bewildered, and it is evident that before msny more moo! be will lay down bis burden With bis falling strength he chance to get over to Owaha, for he fancles nis wife snd child are there, perhaps, and if allowed to have his wish, he would %'ndl] grope his way throu%h the streets of that busy elty, his trembling Umbs carrylng him on a weary, useless scarch for ‘her who ga'ned the love of his earller years, But he ls wieely kept and cared “for here, and can- not well attempt the fraitless wander- inge. Fora man thus tarely old d broken, to epend his Ja d‘"}' u::l., p.;r farm is bard, but to make the life harder he bas been subjected to some inhuman treatment even in this place, which fs considered a public shelter and home for the poor. 'he old gentleman is as lively and vigor- ous as men of 60, and enjoys his life quietly. He was Interviewed by a reporter, who said: “You were chaplain of the Maine legls- lature I belteve, Mr. Allen, for some time?” ““Yes,” was the quick response, and a emile of recollection lighted up his face, I gave 'em ecripture in the legislatore for two years, and I didn’t need a bible, elther. I can remember whole chapters by heart. Read them throug and throngh you know, bat didn’c try to commit them 1 remember in the leglslatura I was call- ed on to pray for a governor, and he wasn't of the same politics as L. So I just prayed that he might be the best governor in the state, if possible. Then there was another governor and he diff- ered from me too, I prayed that he mig't be as wise as a serpent and and as harm- less as a dove.” How did you pray for the leglelatures Mr. Allen,” “The leglslatora?’ I just prayed ‘O Lord, enable them to condense and to be able to stop when they get through.” One day I went to the senate to officiate and I prayed there that the Lord might cnable them to bring order out of chops of con- fusion. The president reproved me for it, but I asked him if that wasn’t what he wanted."” Mr, Allen sald he never used manu- seript. “T used to be at political conventions | ; were Mr. Blaine was,” he continued, “‘and I made a prayer there once which Mr. Blame wanted a copy of. He sent to me and offered compensation fora copy. I replied that I did not write out my prlnyen, and if I did they were not for sale.” The conversat'on branched wpon the recent news of the Inaugural, ‘‘Yes,” sald the down east veteran, a'luding to Mr. Cleveland. *‘I want to sse how they are extolling that plous man, I reed his addrees through and don't see anything so teriibly bad cr deep in ft. It'was commonplace, Some things conld ba constructed either one way or the other. Idldn't see any particular ability manifested.” Mr, Allen told how he had ““cornered’ a lawyer in hils town ection day, ‘‘Allen,” sald the man of law, ‘“how are you going to vote? I want to koow, for I'm determined to vote the opposite " Like a ball from a rifle came the reply quick and to the point: *1'm golng to vote right.” “‘By George,” cxclaimed be of the bar, “‘you have got me. e —— Presidential Innugurals, An Interesting table in the New York Sun shows that Polk's Inaugural sddress is the longest up to flmP contalning 4,- 904 worde; Washington's at the begin- ing of his second term, is the shortest, contalning onl{ 134: Johnson comes next inbrevity with 362, and Arthur pext with 431.
