. THE DAILY BEE-- THURSDAY MARCH 5, 1885 THE DAILY BEE! COUNCIL BLUFFS, Thursday Morning, March.5. URIPTION RATES. = 20 centa per weok OFFIOR: 7 Poarl Street, Near Broadway.! = MINOR MENTION, See J. Relter's new apring goods, Social at the Methodist church parlors this evening. Dr. Barstow has been injured by his boreo falllng on him, Several flags were hang out yciterday in honor of lnauguration, Permit to wod was yesterdsy granted to John Hames and Nannle Bloom, Coske & Morgan have added Mossrs, Watts and Riley to their clerical force. John Dougherty has baen puton polics duty in place of Jack Cusick, resignad. The artesian well at the Institute for the deaf and dumb near here now has a fluw of forty barrels an hour. In another column will be found an atticle on “‘Chris:lan Bankers,” which the young men ought to read, Frank Vao Brunt has purchased Prof, Paige's residence property, corner of Fifth avenue and E'ghth street, and will Improve it and occupy it as a home. Dr. Jefferis reports that the child of H. R, Jones and thoone of Mr. Benton on Third street, who have been very 1l with diphtherla are recovering nicely. Mollle Wallace and another black woman, as well as one white woman, were yesterday fined 89 60 each for the row which they indulged in the night De- fore. Two dranks were found and fined yes— erday. . One of them claimed to be a sleight-hand parformer. The judge gave him two hours to crawl out of jall through the key hole. Jack Shields, Still Bates and John Connors were before Judge Aylesworth on a charge of assaulting Dan Crum. Shields and Bates werc discharged and Connors was fined $10. The offer of $100 reward for the proof that the mayor has had a drink of whisky, wine, ale or beer, since April 28, 1884, does not Include gin. It ought to have put that in so as to cover all. Chief Sklnner now issues an order for all lewd women to go Into some lawful business, and the ealouns to close Sun- days and week day nights at 11 oeleck. Nothing is said about the gambling houses. David Mottaz, the wa'chman at the lumber yarde, has been making his fire record on his nose. In throwing a fire- grenade into the blazs the other morning he got a little too close, and a sudden barst of flame burned him somewhat. Two boys named Bowsfield, aged about 13 and 14, werc arrested and brought into court for quarreling. [t ecemed that their mother had gone off visiting and left them to keep house. Daring her absence one of the boys collected $4 for some rent due his mother and the boys got to quarreling about this money. The judge gave them a lecture and or. dered the money put in the hands of the marshall uotil the mother's retarn, Mr. Joseph Reiter, the well known meachant tailor on upper Broadway, No. 310, has returned from an extended cast- ern trlp, and having searched the markets of Chicago, Cincinnati, and New York, has ecoured for his customers the very latest styles, In suitings and tailoring goods, from the largest establishmen's in the country. For fine suits, siylish, well fitting, well made, and at reasonable prices, Rziter cannot be cxcelled in this part of the country, Oakland is stirring itself up into an oppesltion agsinst the new court house and jatl, Some of its good, honest folks are belng beguiled into fhe Delief that by defeating the proposition the coun'y neat may be changed from Councll Blufis to somewhere elee, and whera should this somewhere else be but at Oakiand’ Of course no sewsible person can de'ib. erately believe that such a change will ever take place, but if the county seat should be changed, poor Oakland would not d & ghost of ashow, Avoca, with Its additioral power and its many shrewd men, would gobble it, and poor Oakland would be woree off than ever, The faneral of Little Ircne Kinsey, the first to die at the Orghm. Home, was quite well attended Tuesdsy. Carrisges wore furnished froe by John Dohcny, Dr. Patien, Paul Bequet, and Goorge Wesener, and a large number of cut tlowera glven by Mr, Cospor. The as:o ctation has purchased a lot in the ceme- tery, on the bill, near the G, A, R.' lot, and purpcses erectng a monument on wh'ch will bo inseribed the rames of each chtld buried there, There sheuld be lit- tle difticulty in securing the needed means for this, and the generosity of the public will doubtlees prompt a ready response to the appeal fora monumer to the memory of orphian srd howeless children o — Real Estate Transters, The following is & list of real estate transfers filed yesterday in the recorder's office of Pottawattomie county, Lowa, as furnished by A, J. Stephenson, abstrac- tor, resl estate aud loan sgent, Council Bluffs, Iowa, March 4, 1885, Joreph Boller t» Willism Dould, part sw | aw } 9, 77, 38, 500, Samurl Tucker to Thomas Robirts, e bue d 14 76 43, $2,370, Marie Myrs'er to Andrew Jorgeosen, part 18, 75, 43, $)60.50. Miles 8. R.op to W A, Pleroe, lot B, b'ook 17, Stuttwan’s 2d add. $65. Total sales, $3,495.50, DON'T FALL ASLEEP. Council Blaffs Needs a Shaking Upon the Court House Question, There is more indifference in Council Blafta about the court house question than there shculd bs, Some good citl zons feel that if those in the eaet end of the counly do mnot oarc whether the county lias & conrt houss or not, and do not care whethor the private and public recordn aro jeopsrdized o not, Councll Blaffscan stand it as well as they. Some others feel that the court houte votes will be all 1ight, anyway, and so are not exeriing thamselves, There is also & peeullar danger from the fact that the speslal clection comes at the laat of three elections within a week, many yoters will get weary in well dolog and ttay at home, To a workingman es- pecially, who lost time in attend. frg the cily clection, and will be called on to lore Mim vext Mondsy at the school elcciion, it will be somewlhat of a temptation not to go tothe polls next Tuesday. It is ol the greatest importance to thiy county that the c>urt house and jail should be built, ana it is also ¢f great importance to this city. Those who aie opposing it in the country ara doing 8o not because they real zo the needs of the county, but becauss they ato 6o set agalnst Council Blaffs, and eo anxlous to help out Avoca, or some other partof the county that they will sacrifico the coun'y's interest to satisfy this projudice. These opposers to the proposttion are flooding the county with circulars, are calllng meetings, are appolnting committees, raistng money to hire workers at the polls, and In every way trying to mislead the honest people with wisstatements of facts and figures In view of thess facts Council Bluffs ehould arousc as one man snd fight fire with fira, No one who favors the bullding of a court housa and jall can afford to tet noxt Taesday pesy without casting his vote. Every merchant and business man who comes In contact with men from outside the clty sball enthuslastically thow up the rveagons for the faith that is within him. There 18 no need of using a club or mak- tog threats, The plain facts, presented earnestly, and received without prejudics will convince any unblased mind that the cheapeet and best thing s for the county to build, If Councll Bluffs ex- pects to help carry the proposition it must be up and dolng, The oppcsition is untiring in 1ts misrepresentations of facte. Let all who favor the propotitions see to it that the truc is spread as broad- cast as the false, and the frue will win. ——— Dr. S. Mcsher, of the Sloux City Chronic Dlsease Institate, will be at tho Scott house in this city, Thursday, March 4th. Will attend to patients and all who are sfilicted will do well to give him a call. Consultation free. THE WABASH STRIKE. The Men in the Round House Object to a Reduction of Wages, The recent order cf ths Wabash reduc- ing the wages of wipers and other lahor- era ten per cent, has caused a strike at varlousplaces along the line, snd yes'crday thoss employed in the round house join- ed io and quit work. The following rae- olutions were adop'ed:] Resolved, That we, the employes of the Wabash, St. Louis and Pacific Rail- way Company, in mess meeting essem- bled, do protest agaivst the discriminate reducticn in our wages, which affect em- ployes who are already bordering on des titution. Resolved, That we expres: our griev- ances to A. A. Talmage, general mans- ger, aud we demand that thls order be rescinded. Resolved, That should A, A. Talmsge refuse to grant our demands, humanity calls upon us to meke a bold stand, even should it require recignation of our situ- ations, Resolved, That the discrimination be- tween organized and disorganized labor in the present recuction presents a sub- ject for the serious constderation of every workingman, and that we congratulate ed labor upon its having escaped our grievagcae. Resolved, Farther, that a copy of these resolutions be forwarded to A, A Talnage dewanding sn Immedfate reply. In response to inquiries at the office the information was gained that the men who had struck cnly numbered about ten and that their plazes had all been fi'led, and that the company would not be seri- ously Inconvenienced here. Nona of the men employed in operaticy frains are concerned in the atrike, 5o that the com- paoy’s busineas will go on as usual, e —— Afine organ, half price, at Beards' wall paper store, next t» postoflice, —— Ohristian Bankers, Under the title of the head of this ar- tlele the Christian Home, a weekly fam- ily and religious paper, published by the Home of the Friendless assoclation cf Council Blufls in the inter:st of the Or- phans’ Home malntained by that aesocia- tion, pays ths fo'lowing tribute this week to two well known bankers of this stata, 1t says: “'As we slatad some weeks since, it is our object now and then to present brief accounts of ministers and laymen of our state, striving to draw lessons from their Itves that wlll be of service to the young in the coming battle of lile. We will speak thia wei k of Col. L. Bently, Bap- tist, «f Malvern, Iowa, and Thomas Offi- cer, Presbyterfan, of Council Blafis, Co'. L. Bantly, of Malvern, Iows, isa bright example of the successful Chris- tian busincss man, He s a devoted member of the Bapt'st church of Mal- vern, and Is active and foremost in every work for God and sufier'ng huwanity, In no way has this luterfer:d with his busi- ness euccsss. Trying to bless others, God hss bleesed him, Under his man- agement the First natlonal bank of Mal- vern has assumed proportlors that gives it a standing among t’ e solld bank- ipg institutlons of the ¢ untry, 1t can be truly sald of him that he is zaalous in business, ‘'fervent In rpurit, terving the Lird.” It ism pleasure to us to have the friend. ship, love and co-operation of such men. It is furiher a pleasant duty to po'nt oot to the youog such examples. There are #0 many foollsh and worldly men who by thelr words and actions lead the yourg to suppose that religlon and business can not go together, that it is well for young men to learn from the resu t1 of 1he lives of men of to-dey thst ths true:t and best succese, even for tlme, comes to those who faithfally eerve God. Here in cur own city we have another just such a case, Mr, Thomas Offi 0 elder of the Preshyterisn church, s the leading bsnker in this city, He ls a man of wealthand his name /s a_power, not only in this elty but everywhere in the state of Towa. Not only s he thusa leader in financlal cjreles but he Is ad mitted by all to be & leader in ail maters for the upbuilding of Chrlst's kingdom. Nevor Is business to pressing but what he is ready to atop and give largely of his means and help plan for the forther- ance of the intercals of any cause that glves reasonable promise of redounding to the honor of God. Young men, look on the llfe of Christ and the lives of such men as these, who bavoe gatned thelr power from a humble following of Christ, and it will be well withyou.
