To-day lots of new geods will ba placed on sil3 too numsrous to mentlon. Call and sce them at Cocke & Morgan’s. Mrs. Horace Everett gave & tea party toa number of friends Saturday cvening, in honor of har guest, Miss Lu Smith, of St. Joseph, and Mies Richardson, of Lexington, Missourl, Oae of the greatest reasons for votlng for Shugart is that Vaughan Is fighting him o bitterly. Vaughan kaows he can- not twist Shugart, and cannot pull the wool over his eyes, Matt Sliter, one of the American ex- press drivers, foll down stalrs while do- liverlng ¢>0ds on lower Broadway Satur- day, and sustained injurles which will keep him laid up for a few days, Such a financicra as John Bennett is just the man who is meeded to help straighten out the city's affairs, By his help 1t will not Le long before clty war- rants will bs worth something in the market, M. and Mrs, Charles Oarllsle, of Mis- against which there is such an open re- volt among the people at large. Tn view of that fast many voters will insist un haviog Thomas Officer serve them, 1t is stated that some of the firemen whon called out yesterday moralng had = |wmore whieky than water on bosrd. There was one little fight botween a fireman and an outsider, and other fincldents, which indicate that the threatened In- vostigation cannot come too oon, Blaxsim, the Third ward demoeratic nominee for alderman, Is reported as eay- ing he would aot have run had he nct been urged to do eo by a delegation of Council Bluffs best citlzens, This dele- gation conslsted of Mayor Vaunghan, J. J. Frainey, Will Galvinand Will Patton. Blaxeim, If elected, will stick by them. Vaughan Is trying to blind the work- ingmen. Ho represents that if Bennett, Shugart and Straub are elected all im. provement will be stopped, and there will be no work. Thinklng men, who have watched the force of warrant, and the amount of cost the laborer gets out of expensive contracts, will not be stuffed or bluffed. The dear old grandmother rouses up feom her nay long enough to mako the startling statement Jthat Murphy, the democratic nominee for alderman at large, has not become naturallzed, and is therefore Imelligible. He may not be nataralized, but he is thoroughly Vaughanized, and will {therefore be sup- ported by the gang, The worklngmen should bear in mind that under the present admlnistration contracts have been let for filllng streets at thirty-seven cents a yard, while the teamsters doing the work get only ten cents a yard, the balance of the thirty eeven cents golng—where! Workingmen cannot afford to eleet Murphy or Blaxsim as these two will work In harmony with the pres:nt administration, “‘Put up or shut up,” Is what Vaughn ssys to the saloon men. A majority of them have concluded it betterto put up alittle, rather than have a fues, Vaughan now has a gold-headed cane, a jewel-be- decked star, a horse and buggy, and there cannot bs many more subscription lats, as It is pretty well supplied. The threat- ened shutting up of the ealoons will squeeze a little more money out of the boys. The Globe, Saturday evening, pub- lished a card purporting to be from J. D. Gelger, eaying he was discharged from Mr. Shugart’s employ, in 1882, for work- Ing for Mr. Pusey. Mr. Shugart not only denles it and challenges any man to make an aflidavit of the fact, but Mr. Gelger himself signs a card denying that, he made sny such statement to the Globe. Mr. Ed. H. Neil, the genial business agent for the Girard and Vokes London bicycle and roller skating celebrities, is in town perfecting arrangements for the appearance of his renowned company of champlons at the Council Bluffs rink, Thursday evening, March 12, Mr. Neil informs us that the company is doing an enormous business, far beayond the most eanguine expectations of the manage- ment. ““If I can have everything my way, the saloons ehall run, If 1 can't have my way In everything, 1 will shut the sa- loons up.” That is a clear Vaughanism. The questlon of what is right or what is wrong, the question of what is for the city’s interests does not cut any figare. it is the cry of a spoiled boy: “‘Give me that ‘erc, or T'll kick ye.” Keep cool, Mr. Vaughan; you only excite yourself, and make others Jaugh at yoa. Charles Nicholson who had the scrap with Chief Walters of the fire depart- ment, and whom the chisf 80 snmmarily discharged, has besn put back in his posi- tton sgain. It was claimed that that the trouble arose over politics, and that the reinstatzment was for political effect, and to stop the investigation which Nichol- son threatened to have made. Satardsy the chief thinking he had made a mistake in reinstating Nicholson, told him to lay off until after eleotion, but Nicholson re- fused. Sach are some of the results of turning the fire department into a politi- calmachine. et the investigation go on, Mayor Vaugbaa, In his desperation, seeing that coaxing will do no gocd, now openly threatens that If the people will not elect his candidates—Murphy and Blaxsim, he will closs up every place in Council Bluffs where liquor is sold under any circumetinces, drug stores and all, If he thinks he can scare anybody he is more conceited even than most people he was thought of for alderman, and there is wo doubt but that he fecls so now. At the same time Vaughsn has cutwardly supported him in getting the nomination, and Reed has no speclal ex- cuse for coming out and declating war on Vaughan, yet ho feels that the fact that Vaughan and his cllque are pretending to support him, is really costing him many votes. Vanghanand hls cllque are in sore dlstress too, They havo nothing to hope from Shugart, and thelr only hope, a forlorn one, s that Reod will feel that he Is under obligation to them, If clected, and may be induced to act with them. Still, they are afraid that if elected, he will fight them In council os bitterly as Shugart. — Beckman & Co., 5256 Maln street, will wash and ofl your harness cheap now. BURGLARS AT WORK. Jennings' Store Given a saturday Night Visitation, Yesterday morning It was discovered that during the night burglars had visited Jenninga' store on upper Broadway. They had giined an entrance through a sliding window opening upon the scales. They bored a hole through the sash, and thus reached the hook #o as to unfasten the window. The most noticeable por- tion of the raid was the tapping of the till, the fellows getting about §16. They may have taken some small artlcles In the stock, but no appreciable amcunt has been missed yet. e Qalifornia Cabbage, Oafifornia Florida Tomatoes, etc., at Wiemers', SUNDAY SCORCH. The Chicago Lumber Company Again Suffers From Incendiartsm, Botween 2 and 3 o'clock yesterday morning the alarm of fire was sounded and the department called wpon to put out a blaze at the Chicago Lumber com- pany’s yard. The fire had been started in a shed where lumber was being dried, and the smell and traces of coal oil point- ed clearly to incendiarlsm. The flames were speedily put out. and the damage was not great, ——— Afine organ, half price, at Beards’ wall paper store, next to postoffice. ——— PERSONAL. Col, Tom was in the city yeeterday. M. J.
