At that time five of his family were sick there, and theee wes a terrible lack of food and oth:r necesearies, One cf his spent Sunday | ( with friends 1 this city, and veturned home | S WHAT ABOUT THE HOME? A Pertineut uery Answered Frankly by The Tee. Covxcir Bueres, In , Feb, 14, 1 To the Editor of the Bex In your paver yon have pitched into the Home of the Frierdless pretty sharply. Then a committece which investigated made o re port that the home was all right. Some ot your readers have been expecting_ you to «ay nething in ret Why is TiE BEE s quiot about it? Tsit bocause st fied that the charges were not true? 1f & why b you not say s TRUTH SEERED Tur Bee would piy no att 1 the above communicstion were it not for the fact that the same query in substanoe lias becn asked by others, verbally, Tte reason why Tue Bee hes kept quict timply publishlrg the repot of the committse without comment, js thet it secmed a8 If the pablic had baen given both mides protty fully. The BEE Fay prosentcd the charges which those famil'ar with the home have made, and has published the report of the Investigating ccinmittee, and thought that would suftica. The Bek has no per- sonal fight to make, but has eimply glven the ews concern‘ng the mstter, leaving the readers to judge for them- selves, The Ber: has no hesitancy, however, in ccmmenting upon the report, and ex premsing opinions concerning’ it, which are held by others as well. It is concaded that the crmmittee who investigated the matiers, were all salect- ed hy ths manager himself, and they ex- amined no witnesees In support of the charges. The committee and investiga tion were wholly ex-psrte. The tecracy of their gathorlng acd of thelr so-called investigation, do not Indi cate a very etrory dseire for a fair and full getting at of facta. Several of the most important chsrzes werc ignored. It was charged for in- stance that while there was nominally an associatlon yet practically there was nore The committee repmt that nominally there was an association and there drop the matter. The charge was made that the institu- ticn was practically owned and control- ed by Rev. J. G. Lemen. The commit- tec report that the t'tle of the original home property, the lotaud cottage, 18 80 arrapged that asleng as Mr, Leinsn usts it for an **Orphan’s Homc" he can not be interfered with in the mansgement cf this proparty. How then, can snother mauager ever be electedto tske his place? But the report eays that all cther prop- erty, r3al and personal, belongs to the assoclation absolutely. What is this property? The commit- toe says it conslats of a $1,400 pleco cf property, on which only $25 has been paid, ard a printing c&ce on which there 1s a debt of $600. In other words, Mr. Lemen owns and controls all the proper- ty that has been paid for, and the *‘asso- clation” ewns all which is not paid for. The report makes no statement of the total assets and liabilities. 1t contalns no statement as to receipts and expenditures. 1t does not inform the public as to the truth of the statement that the man- agers, instructors, matrons and their families being supported by 1he contribu- tlons to the institution outnumbered the little groop of really homeless, depend- ant childrcn belpg cared for. It does ot give the number of orphans in the home, cr how much a week it cokts to keep them, The report does not dery that men's names have been published as approving the finsnc'al reports of the marager without their coneent or knowledga. The committze say no hicg aboat ths insurance company, which formed ons part of the matter involved. In fact, even the expert committee, with its ex- pert investigation, has not toushed upon mwany lmportant matters about which the public would like {0 te informed. In theee and other reepacts the report is not satlsfactory, but Tre Bek, having glven its readers all sides of the affsir freely and frankly, they can dacide for themaelves as well as to have Tue Bre decide for them- e —— A fine organ, half price, at Baard's wall paper store, next to postoflice. ——— Total of 'Taxes, The citizens who now etep to the frent to pay thewr faxes find that the total amcunt which they are called upon to piy 18 over five par cent of the assessed valuation, The varioas items of taxes on city property are as fo'lows: Sridge.
