C—— A fine organ, half price, at Beard’s wall paper etore, next to postoftice. et The True mark of a Chiistian, At the St. Paul’s Episcopal church yes- terday morning, the pastor, Rev. T. J. McCay, preached the following sermon: The word translated charity, in this gospel, in the new version is more prop- erly translated love. The teaching of St, Paul in this passage is simply the teach- ings of Jesus, enlarged- In the mouth of Jesus and of theapcstles it was not a new teachivg, Moses had taught the chil- dren of Israel that (icd had commanded, “Thou shalt lcve thy neighbor as thy- eel'.” While Jesus quoted the second great commandment of the law, ‘‘Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself,” 1t was not & new teaching in one sense while in an- other sensa it was. There was this diff- ercnce that whereas in the old Jewish dispensation It kad a narrow, con'racted meaning which prevented ity applicstim save in a limited rangs of actual kinship, or tribal relations, 1t was now to besome of world wide force snd m2aning. Inthe bauds of the Jewish rabbis the word nelghbor was made t> mesn & very small ocircle of perhaps fmwediate friends or close relations. In the wider applieation which Jesus gives the word it comes from bim &s in- deed & ‘‘new commandment.” It was addreesed to the whole of his followers: ‘A new commandment I give unto you that ye love onc another.” But that he intended that love to go no further than to the small circle of followers to whein he spake we cannot for 8 moment eup pose. The grounds upen which the com mand is baced forbids such a rarrow in terpretation of the words. We are commanded to love each other becauge Christ loved us and gave himself for u. Because God lwved us and gave His son into the world to take upon him- self our flish. Tha love of God was shown by the love of Jesus, *‘As the Fatlier hath loved me, so I bave loved you, Continue ye in wy love.” Grester love hath no man than this, than a msn lay down his life for his frlends. *Ye are my frlencs if ye do whatsoever I command you, and these things I com wand you (hat ye love one anoiher.” 1t was emiuent'y a new law that we should love one another, and mcre than this, that we shculd love as Corist loves, Even, if nccessary, that in proof of our love we thould lay down our life for the brethren, We must keep this truth squarely be- fore us if we are to eratand aright the meaning of St. Paul’s words in the ospel. The gift of tongues, the gift of pro- phecy, yea, even the poasession ¢f tuh o faith tha- it would remove mountaios, ull are valueless if love be wan'ing What a lesron here is fir those whe wou'd put faith and knowledye botore & ife of activa love The who'e practice of christianity is comprired in that one word **Love.” A chrlstan is vo hing without i, ard with it he las nesd of nothing else. The keenest de- light ¢f a true eoul is found in devising schemes by which others are mads happy —in epanaing, not in hoarding. When a rosebud is formed, if the soil is soft and the sky is genfal, it is nct long befo-e it bars's, for the life within it Is so abundant that it can no longer contanitall, but in blossomed brignt nese snd s#lmm ng fragrance, it must needs Lot forth its joy, snd gladden ol the sir, And if when thusripe, it re- fased to expand, it would rot and dfe.
