In order that the public may know ex” actly the facts in the ca'c, 1 desire to make o statement a8 to how I was treated at the pest housa, 1 was taken from the Coy house on the 25th of December last. 1 was not broken ont then, and was not eveu sick. Mr, Kirkendall, the nurse st the pert houze, came for me, by the or- ders of the ¢ unty physician, Dr. Bellin ger. I was taken in an open wegon, In the evening, and It was very cold. Be- fore leaving the Coy house Mr. Kirken. dall told Dr, Bellinger in my presence that there were no bed clothes ncr mattress at the pest houso for me, promised to send some out the next morn- ing. That night Mr. Kirken- dall gave me his two qullts, very thin ones and an old broken down cot to lay on. Thers waa no fire 1n the room, and I lay there shivering all night. Tho next day thore was no fire, there be- ivgno¢tove for that room. The next night I lay there shivering ¢tlll with no fire aud with no more beddisg than on gained enongh of a reputation for belng gulled, without having been confidenced int> bellaving and publishing that there was a plan on foot for running a gas main ovar from Omaha to sapply this city with gas, unless the quality of gas hera was improved. Who in the world has been filling up the Herald man again. L. Harrls, the well known Broadway morchant, on Saturday evening gave a rupper to about twenty of his male frionds. The tlme was amerry one in- dead, and spesches as well as vofresh- ments . were enjoyed heartily, Mr. Harrls leaves this evenlng for New York city, where he will in a fow days lead to the hymenial altar one of New York's fairost daughters Mr, McClurg has returned from Chi- ¢35y where he has been attending a motiog of the cracker manufacturers. At this moeting a western agsoclation was formed, and it is understood that assoon as it gots In good working order the price of crackers will bs advanced. It is said tla: to secure a uniformity of pricas, ezch manufacturer puts up £1,000 to be forfeited in case he cuts prices, and that this amount will go to the person detact- ivg the cat. Bob Burdette lectured at the opera houso last evening, to one of the largest and best made-up andiences ever gither- ed thers. His delivery is poor, but what he had to deliver is good enough to make up for that. It isan almost hope- {ess task for a man to meet the expecta- tiona of an audience, who expect to hear the tanniest sort of a man, and who have 1anned to have all their buttons shaken 0980 by their convulsive laughter, but urdette comes as ncar It as aby man, Tho leoture was not only sparkling of con wit, but full of pathos and senti- ment, ————— Beckman & Co., £25 Maln street, will h and oil harness cheap, now. . PERSONALS, Norman Green is very ill with pneumonia. Miss Nettie Kincaid is visiting friends in Cresent City, Juo, P. Organ, of Neola, arrived at Bechtele's yesterday, to attend court, Fremont Bonjamin of Avoos, was at the Tacific yesterday, oud attending court. Jno. T, Hinkley, of Ashland, Nebrasks, came in from one of his trips yesterday. James E. Wooley, the business ‘manager of the Edwin Clifford company, was at the P'a cific yesterday, J, M. Priest, who, notwithstanding his name, is an insurance man, and a good one, is at the Bechtole's hotel, Miss Tompkins, of Omaha, who has been a guost of Miss Lizzie Brown for the past week has returned across the river to her home. Dr. Montgomery wascalled to Omaha yes terday for consultation with other physicians in the oase of 1., Kinneban, whose foot was recently crushed by the cars, Mr, Kinnehan is in o very precarious condition, and his many friends are very anxious about him, ——— A Slight Burn, Yestorday about 1 o'clock the fire de- partment was called out by the discovery of a blaze st the resldence of Jobn H. Clark, the court reporter, on Fifth ave. |l nue just weet of Pearl street. The fire was quickly put out, the damage being but nominal, The causs was a defective flue, e — HORSES ANv MULES FOR BALE, Two car loads of horses, mules and mares just received, for sale atthe stables of Enhfntel & Boley, Klels barn, corner Fisth avenue and Fourth street, the firet night, The next day I hegan to break cut some, and felt so slck that [ had to keep in hed. That day Dr. Bell inger came out, and ordered Bmma Kirkendall, who was helping her father nurse the patients, to have me come out to his buggy to see him, I gotup and went out in the cold and snow, fo the doctor eit'ing in his buggy, He asked me how | was g:tting along, and when I told him that 1 was sick, he told me to go Ints the kitchen. To reach that room I had to go around the hous?, outside in the cold, that room being cur off from the other rooms. Mr. Kirkendall and myself agaln asked the dector to send out these bed clothes, they not having yet come. He promiced to do soat once. He kept on promising every (hy after thst, but still no clothes, untll the 29:h, four da 1ys afrer I had been there, - Then M Kirkendall got the ex press wan, Mr. Britton, who brought some wood, to go into th ci: yand get a mattress, Ho brought it out tiat same night. Mr. Kirkendall had asked the doctor 1o get a stove for the rcom I was in. The doctor said 1t would be too much of an expenso to the county. After Ella Kelloy's death, th stove from lisr room was brought into the one I was in, unti! Mr. Kirkendall could clean up the room that she had used, disinfect it, and got it ready for me. Then he moved the stove back, and put me in that room. It was four days after I was taken to the pest houss that I had a mattress to Iay on, and six or and the doctor ; house was to bs closed up. Mr, Kirken- dall sent werd back that I wss broken out, and asking the doctor to come out at once. He did not come until the next evenlng. As to the bedding, while | was in the icuge, thera were only two quilts for each cot. These qullts were cheap ones, woalen rag clipplngs being used for fill ing, and far from warm, the filling work ing apart 8o that you could sse daylight through them. Mr. Kirkendall, part of the time had to use covering for himself, and Jay acros two chairs Even Mr. Kirkendall's herser, which wore kept there for the county's use, wero allowed to go two days end nights at one time without feed, and thirty-six hours at another time, the county neg locting to keep thelr a:reement to send out food to them. The foed was ordered time and again through Dr. Bellinger, but for some reason, like the provisions for the patients, it falled to come. In making theee atatemsnts 1 do not desire to cast any reflsctions or blame upon Mr. Kirkendall or his dsughter, who served as nurses, They were kind and attentive, day and night, and did all in their power to make me comfortable, and t) sscure provielons, bedding, ete., for the house, In Ella Kealley's cass,Mr. Kirkendall would ask her time and again what she wanted, and then would order it fer her, but it would not come, and th poor girl would tell Mr. Kirkendall often before her death tkat sho ¢1d not blame him for not baving the thirgs needed. After Dr. Seybert tocok charge of affairs, there was nothing lacking. He acsisted me as often as necessary, fur- nished medicine, and saw that thers was 1o lack of provisions or o'lier comforts. In fa.t I have great cause fr expressing thanks to him and to the nursas for hav- iog lived through tho discomforts and destitution of the first part of my etay at the pest house, and being kindly nursed back to life again, City Msrshal Goanella has also baen very kind, and I desire to publicly thank him. For those who left me to dio like & hog, I huve no haish worde, and do not desire to do them ill, but I make this statsment in the hope that hereafter there may be no such neg- lect of small-pex pationts, and that the public will hercafter see to it carefally that none but kind-hearted and com- potent persous are placed in charge of suwsh important public truets. If apy witnesses are desired, or farther facts, I will gladly prodnce them at any proper time and place. D. G. COLLAMER. Sworn and subscribed to before me and in y presence by D, G. It is true this clty has made largs improvements at a graat cost, and how have they dona 1t let every tax-payer answer for himeeif, It is true wo have Brosdway and Main street paved, with good material, but was there even less brairs used by any set of councilman on machinfem, A street llke Broadway paved with the material it i, with sido gutters ten to twelve Inshes deep with the center of the strest s0 that the water runs in it like a «utter, and nota croesing from one end to the oher. Also Main etreet. Thiok ¢f a paved street so flat thai yon have lakes and ponds on it, eo that citl- zens want a raft or a boat to cross it with. Lockat the skill displayed in In- dian creek, I eay, tax-payers, look out and see you getsuch men for your alder- men {hat will give you &l! the nezded im- provements necessary to the best interast | of the city. We want aldermen that when they let o contrsct that will time to see it is ddMe right, that it s in accordance with the contract, and that the tax-payers get the benefit of their money. Look at the work on Sixth street. wonder if ever au alderman inspected it once, if 80, I should think they would be careful how they let like coniracts, Let every taxpayer cxamine the cuthing — seven days before I w5t the quilts which had becn promisad me when 1 weat out. The nurse, every time the doctor cimy out, would crder provisions too, but they woald not come, and the doctor would get the same order tha next time he came. All the excuse he gave for onr not having provisions was that the city board of health and county ofi- clals were quarceling, and he could not get them t> do anytping, 1 lived on su- gar and water for six orseven days. There was nothing provided by the coum.y that 1, in my slck condiion, could «cat, from the 25:h of December to the bth of January. There was bacon, flour, puta- toes, buckwheat, rice, and a little oat- meal, bat nothing to make any of these info palatable dishes—no mllk, or any- thing of that sort. The doctor sald that hie could not got any milk from the county. On the b1y of January, when Dr, Sey- bort and the city board took charge of affairs, there was a ypeedy change for the better, From that tlme on we had plenty, and of such a kind as a sick man could eat. 8o far as medicine was concerned Dr. Bellioger did not give me any. I got some oil once from him for my face, but it burned my face s> I'bad to throw it away, as I could not useit., He s:id it was sweet oil, cut with aleohol. That was all T got from him. He would come to ths pest hous? and en‘er the room where 1 was, pull bis coat about him, put the coattails between Lis legs and say: “Mr, Co'lamer you're looking elegantly, You've only got a slight touch of the vatfoloid,” ~ Then he would get in his buggy and go off, He would not chargs his clothing, and I mever saw him uss disinfectants. He never examined my pu'se, looked at wmy tooguc, or anythiog of that sort. 1 kept gettlng worse and worse, snd finally iy palate went down, so I could not swallow, and even the sugar and water, which was all the county fur- niehed me, would come out of my nose tnstead of of going down my throat. Mr. Kirkendall, as well as myself, told the doctor what a horrible condition I was in, and yet he did not come out to s:e me for two days, or give me anything to relieve me. Then through ‘{.own ekill and assistlnce of Mr, Kirkendall, 1 suc- ceeded in getting up, so that I could swal- alittle nourishment. I was as near death’s door a3 any man could be and not die, and yet wes allowed to lie there in that dylng, helpless conditlon, for two long days, withou: even so much as the sight of a doctor, Another instance of how affairs were managed. Aiter I had been in the house three or four days, and had broken out, the doctor sent onl some clothes for me and the nurses, with orders for us to clean up and come into town, as the peit around Baglits parx and seo what they have for thelr money. I do not wish to cznsure the present councilmen, but they have driven some things too faat, they bave made the hurden of taxation too heavy and more pariicular in the filled|® district, The bLurden of filling and ratsing buildings was enough for oue year without baing compelled to put down curb stones and ballding walks, so I say let us look for men that will have eome In‘crost for us, and nct for some selish motive of their own, A large tako| Storenouse and Salesroom, 41 M.
