The cacc agalnst Chils and Zoran Thompson charged with assaulting David Ahel, was dismissed by Justice Hend- ricks Saturday. Some of the fiiends of Jake Rogers are srrongly urging his name for the chief- tainship of the fira department, he belng an old fireman, and a good fire fighter. The last heard of Lerch the skipping german edutor is that he collected some Frele Prosse bills at Mineola, borrowed 25 there besider, and started from there to St. Louis. Tho teath annual mazxquerade ball of the Council Bluffs Macnnerchvr is to be given in Beno's hall Tuesday evening. Feb. 17. The Beranan band is to fur- nish the musfe. The clty jail s getting to be known as a flag station. The stars and stripes have been allowed to switch from the pole in a'l sorts of weather, day and night, until there will soou be Jittle left of the ban- ner but stars, A traveling man just from Clarinda gays it’s impossible to got a drink of whisky or brandy there, cven ona phy- sician’s prescription and that the old to- pers there would bs satisfied to hold their mouths at the eaves of the roof an catch the dew off the same were were i at all convenient. IRav. Mr. Snyder of the Bible Alone church, having his attention drawn to a statement in Tue Bee that the Brether- en’s church nambered 1,600 ministers and 75,000 members, says that he has|s just received reports showing the num- ber even larger than this, there being 1,811 ministers and nearly 100,000 mem- bers. Capt. Hathaway aod Ofiicer O'Brien foand a man in a korr ble drunken condi- tion, who had on his pereon letters and newspaper clippings showlng him to be Hon. R. W. Crompton, of Steckville, Neb., & temperance lecturer. The man represcnted himself to ba in the stock busincss aud refused to give his name, but when sobeiad up wes glad enough to beg off, and get out of the ci‘y. Mrs Wm. La Rue, has lately bad trouble with her i, It seems that the young lady on S.turday soughit to eff a reconciliation by feign- The word went out, aud the cruel William, on being told, took no stock in it, eay- ing: 0N, Kate Herbert's cangh'er, husband, snd a seperaticn ensu ing that she had poisoned hersslf. nousense. She's only got the snakes.,” The corvner was summoned by Oflicor Smullen, and rinding that it was & clear cago of put-up-job, he insisted on the young lady paylng the feee, but at last accounts she refused to ecttle the coronar’s bill, claiming that he ought to wait until ehs was gone and then get it out of her estate, Rov. Mr. Mackey preached a rather sensations] sermon for a dostrical one, at the Epircopal church yesterday morn ing. He touched upon the dostrines of Trinity, and rather favored Rev. Dr. Newton, who has been brought before the bar for heretical teaching. The ser- mon was fall of charity to those who find doubts arising in their miods, and the speaker iasisted strongly on putting life before creeds. He holieved in the doe- trine of the Trinity, and explained his own view of it, which diffcrcd some, doubtless, from the idea he!d by many of Lis hearere, He belicved, too, in crosds, but belioved still a true life. My, Mackoy is certainly fearless in utter- ing bis honeat convictions, — Pronbles of the Ton A lively tusslo is reported ss having taken place recently in a stors on Main ot ot more in zues nesr Ninth avenue, batween an ex-soroner of this county ihy pr board- ing bouse, Tt is said the laoy in quesion met the ex-.coroncr in the stoxe and wanted bim to ratract something that ehe al heard he faid in r gard to her newly mercied daughter, and without waiting for a reply to her queetion, plcked up a chair and “‘went for” him, the chair strack the conanter and broke, Sne then tackled him with ons of the rounds of ha broken chair, he caaght har srm and ehe “eaught on” to his beard with both hands snd it took the united efforts of three mea to take the bosrding homee keopor away, prictrees of a South Main s.rect " THE CITY FINANCES. U ui he True Inwardness of the City Aud- ilor's Supplemental Heporly some Rather Startling Facts, At a recent meeting of the city counefl the city anditor presented what he termed a suppiemental report, which was referred without reading and glven so little ap- parent attention that a carcless looker on would not Imagine that it was of any pub- lic interest. Tue Bee called attentlon to the attempt to mislead the public, and the cat belng out of the bag, the next best thing for the clty financiers to do was to meet the demand for the report to be mads public by publishing it paper having as small L3 circulatlon as possible. The old grandmother was therefor given the doca- ment, to put in her scrap bock, knowing very well that that ths old lady would not have enough wakefullness to make any comment on the statements con- tained therein. The following is the re port a3 the lady gives it: To tue Hox. Mavor axp Ciry Coun. cru oF TE Crry or Councin, BLurrs,— Gentleman: The following is a list of warrants lssued by order of the council to January 31, 1885: Special paving warrants...... THE DAILY BEE-- COU Whecler, who went to the depot sand made the arrest, It in that among the follow's personal effacts was the ticket referred to, and that the deputy, who as jailer had the man in custody, succeded g the ticket of him for 810, and t across the river and secured its redompsion, realizing & handsome profit f 815, Some of the police think 1t is enongh for Bates £ make 8o handsome & profit speculatsng cff of prisoners effects, without seeking the honor of having made the arrest, which belongs to one of the police force. UNEASY RESTS THE HEAD Of the Fellow Who Knows A1l About the Polic then we A night clerk at one of the hotels in this clty has been very uncasy for the past woek. It was roported that he knew something in regard to the doings of the police at night, and he was very anxlous that the inveetigating commitiee of the city council should not find it out, as he did not cara to ‘‘give away” any of the “eoppers,” Some a:qualutance told him that the committee wanted and would be a'ter him last Thursday. So on Thurs day morning when he was relioved by the day clork he asked his *rel ¢f” to tell the committee cr any one makir g inquirics fer h'm that he had gone to Omaha, He could not sleep and wes uneasy, 0 got up and did go to Omaha to get awsy frm the committee. Friday be went to his rcom at 8 o'clock and at 9 &, m. was down stairs saying he was going to see the com- mit'ce, as he could not sleep, and he was going to glve the ‘‘whole force away’ sooner than be troubled the way he had been, He could find none of the *‘com mittee,” and on Saturday he only slept two hours, thinkipg the investigation might take plece that day. Yestorday he reetad well, knowing the city fathers tax,a 5-mill levy tax now haing collected; Indian creek scwer ditch, warrants lesued on the strength of an ordinance mnow in existonce providing for the fssning of bonds and levying a tax therefor. In respect to the ordinary clty ex penses it is estimated that therc was on January 1, 1885, little more than £40,000 of general fund warrants outstanding, and for the redemption of which the city general fund tax of 1884, now being col- lected, is $38,650; police fand, estimated, $20,000; total, §58,650. It appears that there wero on tho first of January over $40,000 cf general war- rants of the city stil unpaid, and the probable h income of the year 188) will be $58,000 BIf this was all collected. which is doubtfal, it being subject to ehrinkage, while the outstanding warrants increase with interest vather thun shrink, it would l2ave $15,000 to $18,000 to ap- ply on worcants this year, The auditor’s monthly report thows that the number of warcants issued from March 17. 1884, to Febraary 1, 1885, was 877,013, or at the rate ot §7,000 a menth during the year. At this rate there will be for the year 1885, §10,000 of warcants issued. Add to this the §40,000 outstanding Jenuary 1, 1885, and a total is reached of $130, 000. To meet these warrants there is an estimated income of §58,000. This will leave the amount « f outstanding warrants next January £72,000. In other words, out of the $58,000 which is expected will be collected this year, it will take $10,000 to pay the warrants outstanding on January 1st lasf, and will leave only §18,000 to mect expenses, which, on the basis of Jast year, will be §7,500 a month, or $90,000 for the year. Just how the council can justify themselves in increas- ing expenditures at much more rapid rate than the receipts are increased, le not apparent t5 a looker-on. The mayor has time and time again i1 that the city had more money than ever befora, All the hmprovements of streets, the filling, the paving, sewerago, water, ete., are being paid for by special assossments, and leaving tho regular in come of the clty, general and police fund, licenses, tines, ¢ to be used tor running expenses. has repeatedly asked the quest what ehall be done with all this recelpts’ It is the public’s turn were 1) ask, what has becn done with them? It appears that at the present rats the present administration although re- lioved of haviry to pay for strec’ im- provements ete., is drifiing into a finan- cial stress, and at therate of expenditares for the psst ten months, tho next ten months will see city warrants flyingabout like tlikes of avow Ia view of the fict an progented in this supplemental report of tne city auditcr it 18 not to e wondered at that the city oflicials did not care to give any grevt publlcity to 1t. The city financas should bo well looked into beforo tho hest of a city election comes on, and should be exemined with- 1t political or personal bins, but if, as appears, therc is an extravagant and reckless policy b ing pursued the people should see to it that aldermen arc chesen at this election who will serve as some- what of a check, and as fast a3 t1e terme of otaer otictals explre they should be dropped out, until the business ¢ f the city is put in the hands of careful, honest, business men who will use husiness meth ods and follow business principles. e waling Whisky, A wood one now leaks out on the po- lice. A fellow was arrertsd Satardsy night for being drunk, was taken to pe lice headquarters, searched, his effects laid away, and he laid in jail. Ye:terday morning ho was found lying on the floor, dranker than ever, i1 fect cead drunk, It seems that he had two more bottles filled with whisky hidden in his boot legs, and the police did not solif 1t After getting in jail he made a night of it pulling out theee bottles every time he returned sufliciently to cossclousness to do so. S — 8¢ of Deseetion, Bates, «f Couanell Bluffs, appeared the Unicn Pacific headquartors yesterday ef ernoon and se curd the redemption of a through ticket from Avoca, Towa, to Portland, Oregon, The ticket bai been fssued at Avoca we Henry Shulz That 1". Deputy Marshal at to At every siation on the westward journey Shulz drank cop'- Jusiy, and had dct ridden msny mi'cy be- fore the fumes of bis potstions g t the best of his judgment, and ke confident lally informed the passengers thst he wae a desarter from the regular army, Rock Island areenal. The statament was tele- graphed ahead to Council Bluffs, and when the teain pulled in Marehal Bates arrested the man, Shulz' story is troe, and he will sorve a term {n Leavenworth [Omaha Reoublican, Now it is the turn of the poliec to kick. It seems that the desirter was n srrested by Deputy Marshal Bates, hat that George Edgar, the prvats detect!ve, learatng of the fellow, informed Officer to be t o plous to investigate anything on a Sunday, and to-day he'd probably be unensy if it wasn't for T BEE coming to htarelicf and letting him know that it is a sell on him. e e— PERSONALS, Al Dickey, of Earling, was in the city yes terday.
