For salo—My book and statlonery bus- ness 341 Broadway. H. K. Seaman. e —— Yearly Report of the Y, M, O, A, As we compare the work of to.day with that of a year ago we notlce a most mark- ed advance. A year of constant effort has caused the change. There have been no booms but steady and surely we have made our way nntil we occupy the position we now have in this city. The benefits to individual young men will never be fully known, Soclally—The elegant parlors are al- ways open for any young man who de- sires to meet his friends “in quiet conver- sation or entertaln them with games, In this room a young man has the same rights he would have in his own home., Young men of excellent social qualities are always on hand to cordially greet and welcome strangers. At the Lucsday evening literary hundreds have become acquainted with each other and have becn made to feel at home in our midat For mental improvement the oppor— tunities offered are many. First comes the reading room, with & carefully selected assortment of papers and maga- zlnes. Sscond, chance for development in public speaking, reading and singing, as found in the Literary and social, Third, general knowledge on current events, such as manner of conducting conversations, organization of companles, practical talks, congresslonal debates, law suits, etc. Fourth, lectures; two have been given; one on ‘‘Peculiar Peo- ple,” by John B. Gough, and one on ‘“Sunbeams,” by Prof. F. Starr. Fifth, matter of fact; this very practical way of searching for bottom facts has just been introduced, but promises to be the most valuable means of acquir- ing general information we have got true example. One evening the subject, “‘d'f- ferent modes of transportation” was taken up and discussed. The railroad system was found to be the most com- plete, hence a special evening was spent in talking of rallroads. The cars, value, kinds, coal, freight, baggage, mail, coach, sleeper, etc., size of tralns of each kind, trains compared, speed compared, also any additional thoughts that might be suggested in that line. Physically, our advancement has not been 80 rapid as it ought. A well equip- ped gymnasium s connected with the association but as yet it has not secured sufficient patronage to allow us to stamp the word *‘success” upon it. The spiritual condition of our work is healthy. We regard this branch as our strong hold and there the most of our ef- fort and enthusiasm is centered. The gospel service, the young men’s meeting and the young men's bible study aro held weekly. There have been occasional converslone, but the most notlceable ad- vancement s the development of the spiritual lives of the young men. In times of special interest noonday prayer moetings wero held with good ~results. Financially we have received much sub stantisl encouragement from our busi- ness and professional men, This has come in dobated sums varylng from $1 to $100, and for which we now extend our thanks. Through the kindness of the daily press we have been supplied with free copies of Tue Bee, Nonpariel, Globo and Herald, and many complimentary notices have been glven us. The association has been tae recipieat of many gifts, such as articles of furoiture, decorations, maga- zlnes, coal, wi.od, etc, The Sundsy achool under our ausplces, held near 1he Rock Island depot, has been ably conduct d by Mr, Wylie recently assisted by Mr, Beach, The monthly conferenco between the active members of the Omaha assoclation and ours has been held with profit to both for abount six months, the inter- change of ideas being mutually beneficial. We begin this year with & more favor- able outiook than we began last and we hri\ workiog and praylng for greater re- sul s, Memberehip February 1, 1884, was thirty; number added during year, sixty- six; deccased, two; present membarship, ninety-four, 6,963 persons have attend- ed the religlous meetings and 3,800 the literary and social, P. Sensation Abont a Poor Old Lady Living Alone, Being Eaten by Rats, The A sanaational story was started yester dsp that an old lady named Msric Bar. tinger, living alone in a little hovel, No. 243 Sixth street, had had her fingers eaton by rats, The story proves to be largely seneational, with but little truth. The old lady, now in her 78th year, Is not of very clear mind, and lately one of her delusions has been that a tunnel had been made by neighbors, leading nto her littlo, houso, for the purpose of sending rats into it. The placs In which she livealsa little old hotse, with many cracks for atorms to beat through, and she has not been suffering in many re- specta from destitution. Rats and mice fnfeat the place, but it seems that she has not been o bally caten as the sensational report indicates. The ends of her fingers, but that the flesh was ta- ken off by rats whilo she was aslecp seems not very probatls, The old lady is very peculiar in mauy respects, but Is known that despite her present condition she has been as finely ¢ducated as nng lady In the city. She is a thoroug French and German scholar, has been able to do most clegant embrofdery and polnting, and has received a thorough musical tralning, having been an espec- ially fine performer on the plano. She rocelves a emall amount jrom the old country every quarter, and with the as- sistance of kind-hearted acquainfances and the county, is given a liring, though in many respects it 1s a very sad and lone. gome cne, and lacking many of the com- forts so needed in old agn. A DRUNKEN ROW, 1t is Followed by a Display of Tem- per in Court, Kate Herborts home was the acence of a lively racket Thursday aftornoon. Her son-in-law William Larne and Thomas Brown seemed to be largely concerned in it, and an officer was gent for, The new- ly appointed one, Kilgora appeared on the szene, but though a burly built man, he seemed unable to handle Brown, who was protiy full of fighting whiskey, after one jound, In which Brown [was glven a bleody blow on the head with the police- man’s club, aseistancs came, and Brown and Larne were brought to the statlon. They appeared in the police court yes- terday morning. Brown pleaded guilty to being drunk and was fined. Larne's wife appeard against him, and they had a lively war of words and Interchange of abuse and charges. The display of tem- per was such that Judge Aylesworth con- cluded to let the case go over to after— noon, but by that time the woman had cooled down and did not_appear in court to testify, so her husband was discharged. About an hour later she appeared on ths scene, and finding 1t was too Jate she started off In highidudgeon to tce some lawyer and comu.cnce over again, STILL MORE OHARGES. The FPolice Force|COatching It All Around. Besides the many other charges against the police which have been afred up of late 18 one to the effect that Captaln Hathaway and Officer Cusick were In John Nicholson’s ealoon last Saturday night getting a lunch, when a row broke out, and In settling it one man was knocked stiff, it being fully fifteen min- utes before consciousness was restored. It is eaid that tho affair wes a dlegraceful one throughout, and yet the officers made no arrests and the matter was not re- ported. One of the reasons assigned for the mecresy is that the police have been in the hablt of getting free lunches theze, and hence are under obligations to the house. Tho police com- mittes can goon with mors inquiries now.
