6 THE DAl1LY BEE ~COUNCIL BLUFFS, TU ISDAY, JANUARY 27, 1885. THE DAILY BEE COUNCIL BLUFFS. Tuesday Morning, Jan., 27, — SUBSORIPTION RATES, I s e en0 s a 0 sonta per week #10.00 per your . 7 Pearl MINOR MENTION. Bob Burdette is to lecture here Friday evening, February 0. The Entre Nous club mects at:Dr. Macrea’s residence this cyening. G. W. Bayllts has opened a sample and lunch room at 721 Broadway. Schmitt & Harb, the barbers, remove from the opera house to.day to 402 Broadway. The arguments in 1he Dawson case are to bs made Wednesday, and a declson rendered then. P. P. Kuhn {s prepared to receive or- ders for pspiring, sign and decorative painting, etc., at 721 Broadway. Mt Scanlan, whose ankls was Injured by a fall three weeks ago is now just able to hiubble absut the house on crutches. If you have any disposition to help boya get along In the world, attend the moeting at the Y, M, O. A. rooms at 4 o'clock this afternoon, 1t everything Is favorable aunother ocoasting carnival is to be had mext Saturdsy evening on North Madison street slmllar to the one last Saturday night. A plan for a new court house Is now to be seen in §. E. Maxon's office. It provides for bullding 100x120 feet, two stories high with a basement, and threo entrances, Mayor Vaughan has commenced sult againat the county for fees as justice not allowed by the county board. Of course ‘W. A. Myster is the attorney engaged by Mr. Vaughan, A colored dive was pulled Saturday night by the police, and two white men, Andrew Scott and Joe Winters, found therein with several dusky maids, and one little darkey. J. T. Hurley has resigned his fposition on the police force. In some respects Hurley has made a good officer, and has made some important captures, and wears on his breast a medal of honor pre- sented him by the mayor. The resigna- tion was banded to the mayor yesterday, but he refuses to accept it until certain charges now being investigated by the police committee are detormined. A. Hospe, Jr., of Omshs, has bought out J, L. Stewart. B. V. Kidd remains #8 manager here and Miss Anna Merkel will also remaln. They intend keeping a full line of wusleal instruments, artists’ materials, stesl engravings, eto., and plcture framing. A complete art store, in fact, as well as musical headquarters, The two factions of the democratic party in Council Bluffs are making their entries early. Tho fiisnds of Colonel Koatley are working up a boom for him for democratic nominee for governor, and also for the office of pension agent for Jowa. Mayor Vaughan's friends, who belong to another democratie camp, are adveriising h'm freely as a democratio ncminee for governor, and as avallable timber for Cleveland’s cabinet, and as a suitable choice for the collector- ship of New York. In fact each wing of tho party is doing its best to secure the #upport cf the democracy of the state, and the endorsement of the administra- tion at Washington, A letter has been received here from one of the business men of Oakland re- questir g the co operation ot Neola town- ship in the matter of moving the county seat, from Its present locatlon to a more contral one. The lotter does not desig- nata the place, but we infer that the gen tleman has no other point In view but Oakland. The citizens of this townehip are in favor of leaving the county seat question alone, a3 Councll Bluffs is de- oldedly tho best point, all things constd ored, that there is in the county. Neola will not go into any such scheme, but when the proper time comes our citizens will show their hande, and it will be in favor of a new court house,—Neola Re- porter, Leave your orders for job printing a day or two ahead at Pryor's Bee job of. fice, PERSONAL, T, A. Morris, of Lowsville, was at Bechte- Lo's yesterday. W. H. Lynchard is recovering rapidly from his illness. Dr, Deetkin and Lis brother have started for New Orlcans, William Owens has 6o far recovered from his illness as to be able to be out, Jobn N.Ba!dwin has returned from Lincoln, where he has been engaged in the Btewart oase., Judge Aylesworth was in Des Moines yes- terday looking after the judicial contest in which he is one of the interested parties, Major John Cheney, proprietor of *The Cheney" hotel at Missouri Valley, and also a hotel at Sionx City, was at the Pacific house yesterday. James Turner, of Missouri Valley, the nev- er-sleeplog, everlasting news mwan, was shak- ing bands with acquaintances here yesterday snd attending to burivess, e — For sale—My book and statlonery bus ness 341 Broadway, H. E. Seaman. e — Dr. 0. C. Hazen Dentist 100 Maln St, | Two car loads of horees, mules and mares just received for sale at the eta- bles of Schtuter & Boley, Klel's barn, corner Hth avenue and 4th street, POLICE POINTERS. The Difficnltics and Potiey of the In- vestigatiog Commitiee, Star Chamber Proceedings, What is the police Investigating com- mittee doing? That is a question oftener asked than answered. When Marshal Guaanella preferred charges sgainst the force, the committee met publicly and examined several witnesses, Since then there have been no public sesslons and whatever has been done has been on the aly, star chamber moetings belng held and witnesses being examined without calling upon them to make oath to their statements. In talking with one of the committee Tur Bee man learned that the pollcy ‘e be followed was ajrather quiet and unsen« sansational one, The committee hsd found things pretty bad ad far and it did not seem advisable to make public the facts learned, at lesst at present, There were a fow good men on the firce, ba there were a number who ought to be put off After learning all that could be learned the committee purposed reporting to the mayor, quistly glving him the pames of thoee ofticers whom they deem ought to be ‘‘let out.” The opportunity will be given these men to resign or get off the forcequictly, there belng no wish to spoll them for o her places by publicly parading tho reasona for not wanting them on the force. If this polley 1s pursned the public will learn little of the inner workings of the commlittee room except as it leaks out. Another of the committee, in talking over the matter, says that while there are many rumors In the air, and all sorts of general charges made against the police, yet it is difficult to get witnesses or to get statements from partles who are supposed to know about the matters. With the committee in secret session, with no formal trfal on hand, it seems that those who know anything of a serious nature against the police, would accept the general invitation to all and appear before the committee and tell what they know. Now that the investigation is started i* should go on, ani be thorough, and this it cannot be unless citlzens who knowling to any facts shall appear and glve'the committee the benefit of their knowledge. It is underatood that as soon as the police investigation is conoluded there tion of the city jail epartment. This will be a satisfaction to the police, who feel that they want to get even with the mar- ehal for the charges against them, « DON'T WORRY. The Pretended Letter From a Would- Be Suicide Did Not Originate Here, 7 Last evening's Hera'd gave its readers a little blt of sensation. It was clalmed that a letter had been received written in a feminine hand, but without signature, reading as follows: Councit BLurrs, Jan, 25, 1885, Epiror HERALD:—To morrow morning you may have occasion to mention me in your paper; if eo, oh, sir, do me char- itable, if you can. I ark you thisin Jesus’ name. God bas seen fit to curse my life in such a way that 1 do not wish to live any longer. Surely He will not punish me if I die to-night when He has made me suffer to much already. I have a husband, but he has not shown me that protection a w.fs hes a right to expect, and because I have been obliged to take cara of myself, I am now branded as a dangerous woman and one too vile to live. If I should live snoth r hour I should go mad, and death is preferable to that. But thore is jus. tice in heaven, and an a'l-wise and migh ty God, whose bar we must sll stand bafore #nd be jndged. Ab, yes, and he will alio visit with a terrible vergssnce the people who by their infamous fuls:hoods have driven me to death. Please do not put this into print, and <belleve, sir, it comes from & most unhappy and broken- hearted woman—one that can tind rest only in the grave. Therefore the Herald man proceeds to do a little of the pathetic act, and pleads wilh the would be suicide not to take the threatened plunge into etorvi‘y. The affair m'ght create rome Intereit here, were it not fcr the fact that this letter inatead of being from some Cou cil Bluffs woman, is a letter which a) peared in the Leadville Herald January 8, end by the simple changs of dates and places it was worked over to a Council Bluffslocal. Those whose nerves are easily affected need not worry, therefore, over the prosvect of a suicide here, the letter belng & simple piece of clipping, altered into a Council Bluf’s local. ORUMBS FROM THE COUNCIL Some Contracts Let for More Street Filling, The olty council held another session yesterday afternoon. The most impor- taut business was the letting of some more contracts for street filllng, To James Goulden was given the contract for filling First avenue from Tenth to Eloventh street at 37 cents a cublo yard; also for filling Eighth street rrom Ninth to Tepth avenue at 36} ceuts. To C. R. Mitchell was given the contract for filling nighth street from Tenth to Eieventh ayenue at 31 cents a cublc yard. The petition of Utterbrock and others to hive the cord wood obstruction on Plerce street removed, was referred to the city marshal. The city ney reported thst there vere 80 many csnes pending sgainst, the sity that he could not personslly hunt up witnesses and get together the needed evidence, He azked that sume one be employed (0 asslst him, ana bra request wae roferred to the judiclary committee, The councll then adjourned until Wed. nesday afterternoon at 2 o'clock, o — Working 10r s Boys, Another meeting was held yeetordayaf- ternoon to consider the organization of a society for helolng the boys of the clty in practical way, On motion of Mr. Z T, Lindsey, Captain Overton was chosen shalrman snd Harry Curtis, secrotary, Colonel Hogeland explained the methods desired who can and every oharitable hearted woman will attond this meeting, thata permanent organization may be ¢ flacted. The work is tot merely a relizicus one. It is intended to secure employment for this that afternoon. 1t s every bos'ness man boys that need work, and gocd homes for others, Itis non sec arian, purely be- novolent, and the organization is 8o sim- p'e that it can bo worked casily and suc- ¢ sifu'ly as it has in cther places, There should be a goneral attendance this after- A BAD BREAK. Burglars Smash In 4 Door With an Axe and Go Throngh a Hardware Stare, Awo Men Arrested, Yetterday morning It was diecovered that some time during the night burglas had made a raid on Cooper & McGee's hardware store on Maln street. The gaicirg of an entrance was rather unique and decldedly bold. They had taken a boy's axe, and after breaking the glass in the rear door, smashed through a large wooden shutter, which was ineide the door as a protection, the shutter falllog on the floor, necessarily making a great noise. The fellows had a 1 ght, and they began going through the show cas?, near the frcnt of the store, where any paeser by could have noticed them They s:lected a number of the bestpocket knives, leaviag the cheaper ones undis- turbed, and then took seven revolvers from the same case Either Lecause of being disturbed,or for snme other reascn, they ceased their plundering there, leav- ing plated silverware and other portable valuables undisturbed. The colored man sleeping in Bennett's stable next door heard a noise, and went to the alley door twice and looked about, but saw no one. As he had a fiorce dog with him which was batking fariously, and anxious to be let loose, perhaps this may have been the cause of the fellows skipping out before finishing their work. Ofticer O'Brien learning yesterday that two men had loft on the Rock Island, and one having tiaded off a new revolver, he telegraphed to Neols, and they were nrren!eg there ard etarted back for Coun- cil Bluffs in charge cf an officer, arrlving here last evening. EARLY OLOSING. A Move to Have the Retail Stores Close at 7 O'clock, A petitlon is belng circulated and being signed by numerous parties asking business men to cloee their storesat 7 o'clock p. m. during the dull season. Tha understanding is that all shall agree, or else it is not to go into ettect, If only a majority of the business men agree to it the effort will be abandoned. J. L. Thorman, Cooper & McGee, John Beno, L. H. Mosler, Eiseman. Rodda & Co., and others, are said to be willing to enter into the sgreement if others will. The project will be pushed to a complete trial at least, in a day or two. T ———— Real Estate Transters.
