MINOR MENTION, in Sfoux Falle, Dakots, since last Oc- tober, and planned to move his family there in the spring. He was recalled suddenly by telegrams announcing his wife's serlons {llnees, and reached Tabor on Thuradsy before her death. She leaves two little boys, one about 4 years, ths other about 2. The report lately abroad that she had asked for a divorce frem her husband appears to be wholly without foundation. Maud Clifford and Lillie Morrie, the two girls reforred to in Tue Ber of Sat- urday as being unable to get the ralary due them for performing at the Buckirg Fay Templeton is to be here January 30 and 31. The city council is to mcet at 2 o'olock this afiernoon, Craft's five-cent oigars, twenty for fifty conts, are $25 goode. George A. Stores and Mary Morris have been given pormit to wed. Revival meetirgs will be continued this week at Broadway Methodist church. Prosident Brooks, of Tabor college, preached in the Congregational church ham varlety show in Omaha, have suc ceoded in getting away from Omaha where they beeame ‘‘broke,” on account of not receiving thelr salary. They were in this city on Saturday and ook the Wabaah to St. Loufs, where they have an engagement at the Palaco theatre. Be. fore leaving town, however, they called at Tue Bek office for a supply of Ber's, evidently Intending to send them where they will do good In keeping their friends from making any engaements with the Buckingham managors, yesterday. The clgars that L. B. Craft, 529 Broad- way, is selling eight for fifty cents, are hrat-class $60 goods. Poter Poterson, living north of Walnat had his feet 80 badly frozen as to necessi- tate the amputation of all his toes. The coasting carnival Saturday evenlrg on Madi on street was largely attended, and proved a very enjoyable affair. A good chance for a live implement man to go into partnership s offered. Address “Implement,” care of the Bek. The case of Dawson, charged with as- saulting Eva Peron, was continued Sat- urday in the superior court until to-day. The Presbylerlans held no services yes ter’ay. Itis expected that next Sunday they will be able to meet in their new church. The great reduction in cigars at Oraft’s will not cause any reduction in the quality; they will be kept up to the standard. The Aronaughts will meet with Miss Belle Hatoher to-morrow evening instead of to-night, and will take up the *‘Span- ish Student.” The suit of the colored man Green Meyers agaiust the county to recover pay for nursing a smallpox patlent is to be trled to-morrow. The faculty and students of Tabor col- lege have presented an elegant silver tea set to President and Mrs. Brooks on the occaslon of their silver wedding, All interested in the work for news boys and boot-blacks are urged to meet with Col. Hogeland at the Y. M. 0. A, rooms at 4 o'clock this afternoon. ‘W, H. Eastman, of the Council Bluffs Evening Herald, wishes the BEk to cor- rect the statement made in the Globe and Nonpareil that he was arrested for running a poker room. He ssya the arrest was not made, All oceasion for a small-pox scare is is now said to be at an end, the board of health reportihg no cases on hand, exoept the one or two who are now ready to be let out, but gre’ simply belog kept in quarantine to be on the safe side. The contest between Judge Aylessorth and Judge Loofbourow, for the posilion of the district bench, comes up in Des Moines to-day, the first question to bo determined being the sufflciency of the notice of the contest served on Judge Loofbourow, The following are the officers elect of the Soclal Uniou of the Presbyterlan church: President, Mits Anna Mayes, first vice president, M. A. B. Howe; sec- ond vics president, Miss Phoebe Schontz; secrotary, Mis, Lida Wright; treasurer, Mr. C. H. Judson, Miss Carrle A. Baumoardner died at the home of her parents on Harrison street Friday morning and was burled Saturday afternoon, The family are oomparative strangers here, having only resided here a few weeks. The daughter thus taken away was only 16, and was a victim of consumption. At the Episcopal church yesteray Rev, Mr. Mackey preached from the same text as that chosen by Rev. Mr. Bates, ol the Prabyterian church, the Saturday before, but evidently differs greatly in the documental teachlng, as will be seen by the report of the sermon given in an other column, Mr. E. Eggleston, of this city, is much the Tabor Union, on account of an ar- ticle in that paper pronouncing his wife no medium at all, but a hombug, Mr. Eggleston In a note to the edltor de- mands proof of these assertions, or else he will hold him to account. The editor takes a half column to tell him to sue if he wants to and be —— done, Two men, clalm'ng to be brothers by the name of O'Donnell, were srrested yesterday for belng drunk, ‘They are looked on with suspiclon by the police, who are invesilgatiog their cases, They had, when arrested, over $100, and it is reported that they had $500 yesterday morning, and had been robbed out of two $100 bills by different partles, and were throwing their money about quite freely. Officer O'Brlen found a team Saturday night standing on Main street, and learn- od that it had been there all day. He started to take them to & feed stable, when one of the horses fell in the street, too wesk to stand longer. It is ssid that the team belongs to 8 man named George Alby, and the owner s to be brought to the fronton a charge of oruel- ty to animals, J. A Bade, the well known Tabor editor, has been sadly beraaved, his wife baving died last Tuesday. She was il only about a weak, Mr, Bobe has been e — Leave your orders for job printing a day or two ahead at Pryor's Bee job of fice, @00D NAMES 1RIFLED WITH A Merchant Needleesly Oalled On To Auswer Charges of Burglary and Larceny, 1t has becomo quite common for the arm of the criminal law to be used In at tempts to choke a man into making some settlemeont which he could not be other- wise forced to make, and the free and easy way with which some justices issue warrants, charging men with crime, indi- cates that they do not consider a man’s good name of any account. The announcement that A. J. Mandel, a wellknown Breadway merchant, had been arrested for larceny and for bur- glary, caused general surprise. No one would believe for en instant that Mr. Mandel was either a thief ora burglar, and the merast statement of the cause of filing the complalnts indicated that whether Mr, Mandel'sac!sad beenstriotly legal or not, he certainly had done nothing to warrant any justice in enter- ing such grave charges on his records Oof course the cases ware dismissed at once, without even a hearing, the p o-ecut'ng witness on oorsuliir g an attcrney, b ing advised promytly 1hat theie was n:thing to war ‘ant such cha ges. It seems steatge ¢ at the ju tice who iesucd the papers, Ji ho J+y Frainey, who is euppos d to have som> lega! knowledge, being a member o' the bar. thould not have seen the injns- tice of iesuicg eu h papers. Fianey, whea ju-tice before, did not ecem to bes- itate about making costs for the county, snd fees for himself, and it seems he has become nons the more conservat ve by the vac.t.on which the people have gisen him. The fac's in the case are that on De- cember 11 a woman named Georgla King, living on Plerce street, bought $338 worth of farniture of Mr. Mandel, pay- ing $256 down and promieiog to pay $12 50 a week, Mr. Mandel taking a mortgage on the furniture. She had paid only $17 and five weeks had passed. Mr. Mandel found the house locked and was informed that the woman had left town Being told that other parties had keys to the house, he got a policeman to watch +ha premisas, to protect the property. A man who seemed to be a frisnd of the woman, and connected with her affairs, told him where the key of the house had been left, and that the woman had gone to Atlantic, Afcer walting several cays for her return, he went to the house and got the furnitura, to protect himself as well as her, and eoon after this she re- turned, golng before Frainey, the latter issued & warrant charging Mr Mandel with belng a felon, and the pa- pers at once heralded the fact. Such is the light estimate placed on men’s reputations, and if 1his ia to be the policy pursued, any business man in the city 18 liable to be brought before the public as a burglar or a thief, ———— A Etray Picture, At the time of the dynamite explosion here, twc years ago last fall, P. M, Piyor, of Tne BeE office, lost a car load of fur- niture, his library, pictures, ete., belng blown and burnt, or burnt and blown, sc that there was little Jeft to even tell the the story. Mr. George Makood, ol Weston, while here looking over the ruins picked up a photogroph of a little boy, and also the card of a gentleman in in Wisconsin, and sold them as relics of the event. Some one looking at them last fall suggested that possibly the pic- ture might be highly priz d by whoever owned it, and that poseibly by writing the man whose card he had plcked up h might find the owner. He accordingly did so0. The bard bore the name of “'Rv. John Sharp, Wanpun, Wis.,” and o him the lettter was sent. He was Mr. Pryor's grandfather, but long ere the letter was written he had gone to his lorg rest, The letter was opened by relatives, who sent for the photograph, and failing to recognize it sent It agsin on ita travels to Mr. Pryor, whoreceived it Saturday, and was overjoyed at regamnirg tt, it being the pictaro highly prized by bim, not only becsuse th child was a favorite with bim, but becauss it 1s the only photo- graph saved from the explosirn Tt edges are badly burned, but otherwiss it is well preserved. No one can fally realize the value of 1h+ pictures of friends and of family un'il they are suddenly de- prived of all of them, many of which can never be replaced. The little phto, after its weird experiences and its many travels, received a hesrty welcome by its owner and will be cherished as the only one saved. W, church of this city, made vacant by the rerignation of Rev. Cyras Hamilton, ls now to be filled by a man whose reputa- tion where he is best known warrant the telief that he will prove a worthy suc- cessor, and fill the position well, In response to the call given him by the church some weeks ago, Mr. Crofts bas written a letter of acceptance which was read at the morning torvice yester- day. If was a plain, manly, modest lotter. He expects to be in Council Buffs to enter upon the new work about he firat of March, and he and his wife will surely be weloomed heartily, for not only are there res.dents cf the city, who have known him in the east, but many here have been very favorably impreesed with the man by Incidently moeting him. Mr, Urofts has been in the ministr for twenty years and yet he has kad but two pastorites—Ogden and Sandwich, He hes beon at the letter place for the past elght years, and as in other fields ae has not only been very successful in building up the church, but has gained many personal friends, who regret exceed- ingly that he should leave them, Mr. Croft has been troubled with bronchial difficulties, and his physicians have urged upon him the nec of a cli- matio change, and for thls he has con- cluded to leave the pastorate of the Sandwich church and move to this city. The Free Press of that place In announc- ing the fact saye: ¢ Rov, Mr. Crofts has been pastor of this church for the past eight yearrs, and has done nobly for the cause of Christiani'y and his res'gnation is much regretted by his congregation and a large circle of friends. Mer. Croft's aside from being so ablea preacher, is evidently a favorite of the muses, and numerous poems from his pen tave met with great public favor and been gladly given spece in leading jour nia, In his younger years he wasna printer, and his exgeriences in the prac. tical affairs cf 1lfe have porhaps helped him in gaining his knowledge of men and how to meet them, and this soclal, prac- tical side of his nature, is siid to have oroved as great sn element of his success a3 his pulpit abllity. The followiog is the letter of acceptance read frcm the pulpit yeetordsy: Sanpwicn, I1)., Javuary 20, 1885, To the Congregational church, of Cruncll Bluffs, Iowa: Greeting —Graca, mercy aud pesce from God our Father, ard from oar Lord Jesus Christ. I accept your call believing you are a good, true, eainett Christan people, seeking the truth as it is in Jesus Christ, desiring io your hearts to promote the in- terest of the Master's kiogdom, that you understand the impe)fection of human nature, and that you will aesist in every poeti-le way toward the supreme end of glonfying God and saving eonle, In tais T have perfect confideace. As no time was specified, I therciore suggeat that the first of March next be the time for the tegining of our mutoal labor, and that our engsgement be prac- tically for three montne; that is, the re— lation may terminats ateny time in the future by either giving the other three months notice. *Wkhere the splnt of the Lord is, there Is liberty.” Prao ior me.
