The Police Cabinet as Prepared by a Bee Reporter, The Porttolios all Provided for and & Few Applicants Left, In these days cabinet making is in order and a Beg reporter has taken upon him- self the task of arranging a cabinet for the worthy city marshal, Hon. Thomas Cummings. The task has been a difficult one because of the number of aplicants cabinet positions and of courso many of them have been left out in the cold, but toall such wo sincerely say, keep up heart, be faithful and honors and laurels will yet come to your manly bows and a bright and shining star will adorn your breast, while withs tately and martial tread you shall meander over the asphalt pave- mentwith your club within your hand and take your turn at free drinks and free lunches with the best of them. The cabinet which has been prepared is as follow Hon. P. Desmond, secrotary of state. Hon. Maurice Sullivan, secretary of war, Hon. Ed. Gorman, secretary of the in. terior, Hon. Al Sigwart, first assistant secre. tary of tae interior. Illon. Gustave Beneke, attornoy gen- eral, Hon. Tom. Cormick, secretary of the treasury. lllon. John Turnbull, postmaster gen- eral, Hon. J. C. Pentzel, legal adviser. Hon. Joe. Grannacher, sergeant-at- arms, The secretary of the navy has not been appointed yet. The river is closed, and there is really no need for such an offi- clal until spring. As soon as the ice goes out the secretary of the navy will be duly appointed. It is meet and right that Patsy Des- mond should be lifted to the exalted po- ftion of secretary of state, for does not he it in the marshal's office and attend oe ail private business? Certalnly he ons: and hence his appointment. aurice Sullivan marshals the hosts when a raid is to be made and hence is entitled to the secretaryship of war, Ed Gorman remains within the gloomy walls of the city prison_and receives the culprits as they are handed in and is there- fnm) secretary of the interior (of the jail). While Judge Bencke is not under the city marshal’s rule, yet he is called upon to pass judgment in all cases of petty crimie and should therefore be christened attorney general. Tom Cormick, being court officer, is the only man who gets an opportunity to han- dle any funds and hence should have the important position of secretaty of the treasury, a position which many a man would crawl upon his hands and knees from here to Washington to get. John Turnbull is the man to whom all letters are turned over for investiga- tlon and must therefore have a cabinet position and the postmaster-generalship is right in his hand. Jerome Pentzel is always on hand and is ever ready to give good advice and is consequently christened legal adviser. Joe Grannacher is the veteran janltor and by right the office of sergeant-at- arms falls to his lot, There are many other good men upon the force and it would be a plessure to elevate them to cabinet positions, but as the portfolios are all taken at present, they will have to wait for a time, and if clvil service reform is the rule they may yet be able to scale the dizzy heights of fame and from the exalted position of a cabinet office look down upon poor grovel- ing humanity. OOUNTY OLERK'S CHANGE. Mr, Leavitt's Office Transforred to the New Court House. Sunday County Clerk Leavitt, with the aid of eight able bodied men and four teams transferred his books and papers from his office in the old court house to the basement of the new court house, where temporary quarters have Leen fitted up for him, Everything had been gotten ready so that the change did not take but a short time, and yesserdsy morning at§ 8 ov- erything was In readiness and the office thrown open for business, The books, papers and records are so conveniently arranged, under the personal supervision of Mr. Leavitt, that he I8 now able to lay his hand upon any docu- ment wanted even more readily than in the old office. Although his apart— wments in the new building are_ only tem-— orary, yet they are so fine as compared with s old quarterd that it is like moving out of a hovel into a palace. His vault is nearly? as e as all of his old office, and is conver o He is in the nortl ilding and has one large room for general work, a roomy apartment foc abstract work and a good sized room for ler's office. Nearly all the bakery proprietors in || the city were present and mauy of them expressed themselves in strong terms. l‘h:{nnn very ladignant because of the cuttlog of prices by the Garneau compa- py and sy that they canuot baxe bread UMAHA'DALLY BEF---TUESDAY. JANUARY 6, 1885, for the prices at which the Garnesu company propose to sell it They say that as Garneau's ovens are always hot It does not oost him anything to bake his bread, and as he buys his flour in ten car load lots hel secures a reduction in price which amaller denlers cannot get. The bakers say they have their little all invested in their ovens In this city and cannot afford to be driven to the wall. No definite action was taken, but an- other meeting will be held in the near fature when they will take sombd steps to protect themselves. POLICE COURT. The Breakers of the Law Before the Court of Jastice, Monday morning, as usual, found a number of cases for trial in police court. The crowd of spectators was very large and they amused themselves at laughing at the pleadings of the unfortunates who were up for trial. 8. A. Robinson, Henry Hottel and Oscar Hottel were cach fined $56 and costs for being found jin a state of intoxica tion, U. 0. Wallace and Glorge Lear were arrested for running a gambling house on South Thirteenth street, They each gave bail for their appearance for trial at a fu- ture date. Pat Dolan was up again for drunken- ness, This man has come to be a nui- sance by his frequent appearance in police court. ~As he walked up in front of the judge's desk he said that he would like to make a specch, He was told to lead out and he said that he had been at work and a friend came to visit him and they took two drinks, The liquor got into his head and he now asked to be excused. The judge said he would fine him $6 and_costs and if he came again he would give him a good long time on bread and water, John Compton was charged with being a nuspicious character. He was a roughly dressed, green-looking feliow ar 1 looked more like a fool than a knave. As he walked up he sald, ‘‘now I'm going to tell the truth and nothing but the truth before the court.” He sald he was look~ ing for a cousin named Burt, and went toa house on Leavenworth street and rapped at the door. The knock was not answered and he went around to the win- dow and hollered, and was there arrested. “I am a hard working corn husker and here is my husking pin,” sald John, at the same time presenting implement of warfare. The judge told him that he would have to hold him until he saw the officer who made the arrest, whereupon John broke down completely and sobbed until the court house almost shook. — ‘WanTED—To exchange wild or improv- ed lands in Nebraska or Iowa for Hard- ware, or stock of general merchandise. A Protest Against Public Funerals in Diphtheria Cases, Several of the physicians in this city have called the attention of a BEE re- porter to the fact that diphtheria is quite prevalent in this city at present and suffi- cient caution is not taken to prevent the spread of this dread disease. One physician said this morning that in several instances where children had died of diphtheria public funerals were held. This, he says. is very wrong and has a strong tendency to spread the disease. He advises that in cases where death occurs from diphtheria or scarlet fever that the funerals be pritjate and as few persons as possible attend. This may seem hard to the bereaved friends, but at the same time, when they come to look at it calmly and do not allow their judgement to be biased by their feelings of sorrow and sympathy, they cannot but see that it is eminently proper and should be strictly adhered to. As diphtheria is now in the city it is a matter of the greatest importance that all possible care and precaution be taken to its spread or it is impossible to tell ——— Map of Nebraska, Juat Issued, in colors, showing clties, towns. rallroads and counties., Malled for 15c.
