C. Campbell. There was a happy gathering of young people at the home of J. J. Brown Fri- day evening, in honor of Miss Nora Brown. Mrs. Peter Tholl, wife of the Main atreet grocer, now suffers from three broken ribs, caused by slipping on an icy sidewalk. L. Jerome, the ex-traveling man ar- rested for having plcked up and kept some money lost on the street, has glven $300 bail. - One of the best hills for coasting is on "Third street. Few If auy teams pass there and few pedestrlans, glving the coasters full away. John Richabach, who has been wanted for some time on the charge of assaulting Ernest Fortache with a brick, was arrest- ed Saturday night. John Templeton made & great score coasting the other night, but made it in the wrong place, it being alongside one eye and his forehead. He will survive however. A keen watch is bsing kept at the county jail, it being feared that an at- tempt will be made to break jail by those who have been found guilty, and are awaiting sentence. There was another disgraceful row on Pierce street Saturdsy nlght. Smith, Jones, E, Washington, M. Catlock, E. Oneof the little glrls has been taken ill and the .quarantine therefore re-established. An Indictment has been found agalnst ‘Walter Allen, the boy who is said to have caused the death of J. W. Mozse’s son. The charge against him 1s manslaughter and he will be arrainged this morning, +Chase’s Daily Baby"” is the name of the new daily issued at Atlantic by Chas. . Chase, who declares its pollcy to be “Born to Yell, Howl, Hurrah and Make Money.” Itisa wee one, but decldedly lively and bound to grow. Dalsy Duprez was before the mayor Saturday on a charge of belng drunk. She was let off with a lectureand a prom- ise to keep stralght, but before the sun went down she was howling drunk again, and was sent to jail for thirty daya. The Kansas Oity railway compsny has enjoined the city from destroying or b moving the ice-house built by the gom. pany, between Bixth and Main street. “The city claims that the ice-house is wight in the middle of a street. Among the articles to be raffled to. morrow at the Catholic fair are a hand. @ome parlor clock valaed at §50, a hand painted mircor, by the sisters of St Francis academy, valued at $50, and a large doll, four feet high, The above are all twenty-five cent chances, John E. Ahles contributes to this week's Non-Conformist & well writen ar- ticle on *‘Spirituallem,” in which he elalms that “‘no living God, nor any man, nor any woman has ever returned after death, and nothing has ever been done by svyone bat what nature has done for him," her face against the arm of a chalr and received an injury to the eye which may cause the lons of the sight, though it 1| | ments of Interest to Tax-Payers, hoped not. Mr, Starr has been secured to give this lec- ture at Omaha, Cedar Rapids and Boone, as woll as’at this place. John Dann has resigned his position on the police force. One of the reasons asvigned s that after arresting Jorome, for which he expected to get a reward, Officers Cusick and O'Brien claimed that they were the ones who arrested him and were entitled to the reward. Dunn's place has not been filled permanently, ex- officer Mullen taking it temporarily. W. 8. Wright, of DeVal & Wright, has now become interested in Rector, Wilhelmy & Co*, wholesale hardware, corner of Tenth and Harney streets Omaha, Mr. Wright will continue to re- sido here. Ho is one of the most enter- prising and reliable business men of Council Blaffs and 1t is a loss to commer- clal circles to have him plaze his interests elsewhere, but still his many friends wish him success in his new field. The Home is now $2,500 In debt, but all that is Immedlately pressing is $300, which the manager Is very anxious to se- ovre at once. As will be noticed by another column Harkness Bros., are offering their entire stock of dry goods, carpets, cloaks, etoc., for cash without regard to cost. Thelr stock is a large and varied one, and their offer presents an excellent chance for the public to get just what they want at prices which will make it a great object. Harkness Bros., are so well known here that it Is needless to say they mean just what they say, and will do as they prom- ise. Their special offer will cause their store to be headquarters for bargains in that line, The new patrol wagon just made by H. F. Hattenhauer, for the use of the po- lice department, is one of the finest which any clty can show up. Besides be- ing substantially made and very finely finished, it has. all the convenlences needed. A large gong serves as a warn- ing to “‘keep out of the way,” lights are placed on each side of the driver's seat, a foot brake is attached, there are rings for the use of ropes if necessary, boxes for keeping lint, bandages, etc., a snug place for stowing away the stretcher, and in fact, everything as complete as a hospital on wheels, s McClurg's relf-rising buckwheat flour is the best.
