v THE DAILY BEE COUNCIL BLUFF S WiRo ¢ ADAY. DECEMBER el 31 IE DAILY BEE. JOUNGII. BLUFFS. Jednesday Morning December 30 BUBSCRIPTION RATES, 20 ocenta por - 410,00 per year MINOR MENTION, H. R, Stewart, artist, at Chapman’s, Bee J. Reiter's new stock of ,oloths, Try McOlurg's self-ralsing buckwhena t The Cathollc fair is in progress in Beno's hall, Baird’'s minstrels appear at the opera house to-night. Special sale of dress goods at Cocke & Morgan's, 347 Broadway. A man named Massay paid the usual penalty yesterday for belng drunk. Great sale of white shirts at Cocke & Morgan's, 347 Broadway. Harry Hanson is now on trial in the district court on the charge of stealing a horse. William Brown has been acquitted of the charge of stealing his brother's horses. A little child of Mr. Brown, the car- penter, on Avenae D, died yesterday morning. Charles 8mith 18 now in jail for a week for stealing a comforter from Dayhoff’s saloon. Pormit to wed was yesterday given Thomas Rogers and Electa Leland, both of Beaver, Boone county, Iowa. The Knights and Ladles of Honor en- tertain their friends this evening by a social in the Royal Arcanum hall. Conrad Gelse s employing seventy teams and a large number of men putting up ice. The ice is now a foot thick. The boy Anton Thompson, who stole a palr of shoes from Plerce’s second-hand store, has been fined ten dollars and | costa. The G. A. R. 1s requested to meet at headquarters at 1:30 this afternoon, in uniform, to attend the funeral of thelr brother, George Bowers. ‘Wm, Ferguson, who has served one term for stealing a hat from the ,Paclfic house, is now in for thirty days more for stealing a robe from Bouquet's barn, *“This is a depot,” has heen suggested as the proper thing to put on the white background of a sign now awaiting let- tering at the Broadway dummy depot. H. H. Inman has purchased the bil- liard hall, No. 15 Main street, and is about to have the same renovated and re- fitted in fine style and run in first-class order, The M. L. S. C. gave a happy corn party at the Methodist church last even- ing. Corn was served in varlous forms for refreshments, and there was musical and literary exorclses. The grand jury is sald to be investiga t- ing the case of the Morse boy, whom, itis clalmed died from the effect of usive blows and kicks given by some schoolmates, the Allen boys, A man living next to Kirk’s saloon on lower Broadway is reported having beaten badly his wife andson, but this wife either through too much fear or too much love refuses to prosecute him. Surveyors have been engaged the past week staking out the ground owned by the U. P. about the transfer. Whether for a change of the switching to this elde of the river or not is yet to be as- certained. In tho district court yesterday C. Walker was tried on the charge of pick- ing the pocket of E. Welch, during the blg Carllsle gathering here last fall. The case was given to the jury late in the afternoon, The Westbrook brothers, who have the reputation of being even more skillful bicyclists than the Wilmots, are at the roller-skating rink for a New |Year's matinee and an evening performance. They should draw a crowd. Eva Parson, the woman whom the con- tractor, T. Dawson, is said to have so badly beaten with a beer glass,[is reported to be delirious, and her condition quite alarming. 1f such is the case it seems that the bonds of 200 are very small, The case of Dr. Oross is now set for Friday, and four deputy sheriffs are out summoning the jury, the county being divided into four parts, each deputy tak- ing one. The deputies thus at work are Beswick, Heisler, Harding and Long, of Avoca. George Rudio, who represents Lautz Bros ,of Buffalo, Is spending the holidays with his family here. Mr. Radio has re cently purchased some fine lands in Kansas, and in conjunction with C. E, Adolf, intend to engage 1n the cattle bus inese, & business which gives every assar- ance of belng more profitable than almost any other, 1t scems to b generally understcod by the railway employes at the transfer that aftor January Lst all employes residing in Omaha and working for the Unlon Pacific in this city or v will be compelled to buy communication tickets, at one cent per mile, for use on the bridge divis- fon, At this rate it will cost the men ten cents per day carfare for the round trip, Detective Fero, of the St. Paul road, caught two railroad men taking an empty beer keg and arrested them, They were James Andzews, & car repairer for the C. B, & Q., snd Fred Troprell, car repatrer for the St, Paul, They claimed that they had bought a keg of beer some time before, and that some one had taken the empty keg, 80 that they wanted thia keg to send back to the brewer. Justioe Sshurz found them guilty of larceny and fined them each $3 and costs. A goodly numberof taxpayers and bus. iness men have joined In the temporary organization of what promises to be a permanent citlzens’ association, such as has done effective service in Chicago and othor cities. It is the Intention to have an organization which will encourage manufactaring and other interests here, and work for the upbuilding of the city, At the same time the assoclation will keep clove track of officials and encour. age them tn well-doing, and censure them if ill-doing, The assoclation will hold ita meetings with closed doors. The presentation of such a play as that glven at the opera house Monday even- Ing does not add any to thq reputatton of the place, and Is wuch a damage not only to the morals of the clty, but to the logltimate announcement, that it is strange the management of the opera house should permit it, There s only about a certaln amount of money to be pald out each year for amusements, and to have such a disreputable show draw so large a share of it, lessens naturally the amount which worthy entertainments should have. It is said that Council Bluffs does not get the best sort of enter- tainments, and so long as such shows are allowed to take away the dollars, 1t will always be.so. Itls to be hoped for the sake of deconcy that mo more such com- panies will be allowed to debase so bean- tiful an opera house. ——— McClurg's self-rising buckwheat flonr always ready for use. Try it. Keller on Vine street and got away with about $25 worth of clothing. Officer Dougherty was soon on hls track and found him trying to sell some of the stolen property. The fellow made a break and ran, but after a lively chase was caught and the property was recovered. The fellow gave his name as Alex McDonald, and dld not deny doing the stealing, but insisted that the stolen olothes were not worth 8§20, evidently hoping to get off on a charge of petit larceny. His case was at ence presented to the grand jury, which s still in ses- sion, Yesterday Jafternoon two young fel- lows In passing O'Neill's store on Broad- way snatched several boots which were hanglng out as street signs, The boots wite o3 ohisy, TARLAAA of being in pairs, but before they had dlscovered this Chief Skinner had discovered them walking up the streot and arrested them with the boots stlll in their possession. They were at once taken before Judge Ayles- worth, where they gave their names James Corcoran and Joseph Dougls They pleaded gullty and were sentenced to jail for thirty days each, just what they evidently wanted, it being easler for them than to get an honest llving by work. ———— A BARGAIN, A stock of cigars for sale cheap, among which is a lot of good bc cheroots at $16 a thousand.
