The boys have commenced the winter ooasting on Willow avenue, the sleds gliding swiftly down the hill, across Bancroft, Main, and even Pearl street, clear to the Park. The boys should have their sport, but if there are to be many coasters and much excitement, some pre- caution should be taken to preyent acci- dents, Mr. Honn is still quietly presiding over the scales at the juncture of Maln and Pearl streets, and does not seem to be disturbed by the manifestoes of the city councll. He says he shall hold the fort until May, at which - time his license expires. The Board of Health ThinkS 106)orans, John Stewart, George Fauble, Small-Pox Cases Negleoted, Tt Passes 1iesolutions of Ocnsure, an glven to the public In yesterday’s Bex. he had been neglected by the physician in attendance, and that he was needing food and was in great want. *Ald, James was appointed to vislt the Coy house, and went immedlately there board, The other patient claimed that he had two sandwicnes to eat since Ohriat. summoned County Supervisor Graham, and requested him to appoint another nurse and see that they had better care, and he promlsed ‘o see to it personally and do all In his power. A resolution was passed censuring the county physiclan, it being clalmed that he waa in the hablt of simply handing medicine In without seelng the patlents at all, Aunother resolution was adopted that in the fature no one be taken to the gent house without permission of the oard of health. The article In yesterday morning’s Bex in regard to the death of the girl at the pest house, and the treatment of her fam- ily while in quarantine, caused some tle comment, and an investigation is be- ing set on foot to ascertain whether the reported neglect Is true, and if so who Is at fault, In regard to the case it seems that the county ltas not been scrimping any, but has been dealing out with a lav- ish hand. The county farnished a phy- siclan, who Is pald extra for the services, two nurses, a man and his daughter, were furnished at a cost of $8 a day and board, and a great abundance of food, clothing and fuel was sent to the pest house, so that if the girl was neg- lected, it was not on account of any lack of supplies. As to the famlly, who were in quarantine. It is clalmed that the county board ordered Mr. Hurdin to see that all needs were supplied, and Mr.Graham himself bought & dozen blankets, five of which were sent to the family, and the others sent to the pest house. In removing the girla wagon was used, with the box filled with hay, and a mattress placed upon this, making a soft bed, while two covers were placed over it, making it warm, and the county physiclan went with the wagon personcily, It seems that the county has spent money liberally enough to care for the girl and the flmify in almost lnx- urlous manner, and If there has been any neglect, it must have been on the part of some of those employed to see that the arrangements were carried out. A Verdict which was ne Verdict at all, The case of Doyle charged with picking the pocket of & man named Goodwin, came to a close Saturday afternoon, and was given to the jury, who retired. About 9 o'clock Saturday even- ing they agreed on a verdiet of guilty, and preparing the necessary document sealed the envelope, and prepared for rest. The court had adjourned, the judge had gone to Atlantic to spend Sunday with his family there, and there was nothing to do only wait, The hours dragged wearlly along, the jurymen being in custody of an officer until yes- terday forenoon, when on the open- ing of court the foreman, John Hamg mer, handed in the sealed verdict. The judge glanced at the verdict, and re- marked to thesurprise of the jury that they had left out & very important part of the verdict, and sent them back to the room where they had spent so many weary hours. They soon discovered that they” had left outthe word ‘‘guilty,” so that the verdict read, *‘We find the ce- fendant as charged in the indictmert They speedily made the correction and were restored to liberty.
