The dear old lady a short time ago charged that the city contractors were not paying their laborers, Now she wipes her eyes with one corner of her apron, and takes it all back, aud says sho Is sorry, but she didn't mean any- thing. She never does, The Svendsen concert is to be given in the Congregational church Friday night, instend of the opera house, because Mrs. Svendsen being celebrated as an organist it is necessary to have a pipe-organ. The concert promises to prove one of the richest musical treats ever glven here. It will be remembered that Dr. Baggs dld not appear to answer to the charge of turning a small trick here, for which he was arrested and gave bonds, bave been forfeited, and sutt commenced agzainst the bondsmen. It makes much merri. wment. County Supervlsor Graham has let the ontract, in accordance with the resolu- tions of the board, for the repairing of Becond strect bridge. Mr. Graham, while watching the intorests of the county closely, is by no means overlooking Coun- cil Blufls. As & member of the county board be is devoting much thoe and energy to his duties, and he is certainly entitled to much credit, Milton Nobles, who as “‘Phoenix" has won such & roputation on the stage, is to give a dramatic entertainment at the opera house on the evening of the 10th Itisto be a complimentary benefit to itév. Mr. Mackey, the rector of St Paul’s chorch, who is an old friend of Mr. Nobles, Aside from the werit of the entertainment, the fact that it is Mr. Mackey's benefit will cause many {o pur- chaso tickets, as no clergyman in the city has more friends and admirers among all classes, The Herald tries to make a sensation about & woman, Stella Bates, who threat ened the life of the presiding genius cf the Ponix lunch-counter, The Herald man made the whole affair out of a memo- randum on the police record in which SUll; Batos name appeared, Some joker told hm it was meant for Stella Bates, and after some injuiries as g0 what sort of 8 glrl Stella was the eager reporter dished up & sensation., It will beas much as bis life is worth when 5till gets his wrathy clutches on him. e Telephone to No. 113 for dry hard stove wood and kl:dlng. Big supply, Prices low, Pparr Overrox, MAKING A RAISE. A Siick Schemer in the Role of Cowhoy, He Tries to Pass a Raised Check, But Fails, Long Headed Planning On Tuesday last a young man in the garb of a cow-boy appeared at T, W. Spetman & Bro.'s store on Main street, and after looking overthe stock of cigars, purchased a box, He thon snid that he wanted to sond some monoy to & man in Litnooln, and asked Mr. W. C. Spetman to make out a check for £5.55 payable to E. Ramey, or order, Lincoln, Nebraska, and signed F. W. Spetman & Bro, The The bonds [} stranger pald over the money for the check and went his way, In the ovening he returned and told Mr. Spet- man that he had accidentally burned the check in one place, and wanted him to' make out another in its place. The choeck did appear to be scorched badly Inone place, and from Iater developments it seems probable that the check was damaged in some at- tempt to raise it. After gotting the new check in place of the damaged one, the fellow went out, and the next heard of him was yesterday, when he appeared in L. Mosler’s clothing store and wanted to buy anovercoat. One of the sales- men, Mr, J. H. Kolman, fitted a coat to him, and he being satlsfiod with the gar- ment and price, tho fellow offered a check in payment, desiring the balance above the price of the coat to be paid him in currency. The check thus offer- ed was for 284, payable to Harry Howard. or bearer, dated Docember 3, and signed Dy F. W. Spet- man & Bro. Mr. Kalman said he had not enough currency, and asked the man to wait while he went over tothe bank and got the check caehed. On going to the Firat National bank, on which the check was drawn, he presented it to the teller, Mr. T. Los- kowski, who at a glance saw there was something wrong about it, and offered it to Mr. Rice for inspection. That bank official said, ““If I remember right that same check was presented once before here to-day.” The signaturo was clearly that of F. W. Spetman & Bro., but the check had apparently been raised, the date being cfllugod, the name and the amoant. Mr, Kolman went down to Spetman’s store with the check and thero learned tho history of tho check, Mr. W. C. Spetman went back with Mr. Kolman to Mosler's store, but the fellow who presented the check had disappeared without the new overcoat, or the check, OOMMEROIAL, OOUNOIL BLUFFS MARKRT, Wheat—No. 1 milling, 60@65 No. 8, 50; rejected 85 40, Corn—New, 25@38 v 00@7 00 por ton; bale od, 50@60, Corn Meal—1 80 por 100 pounds, Wood—Good supply; prices at yards, 6 00@ Conl—Delivered, 0 por ton rd—Fairbank’s, wholesaling at 9§c. flour, 1 50@2 90 3 00 por doz, LIVR BTOOK Cattle—Butchar cows 8 stoars, 5 75@4 00 hard, 950 per ton; soft @3 75, Butcher PRODUCR AND FRUITS, Poultry—Tive old hena, 2 50 per doz; spring chickens, 2 50 per doz. C. llnmn Dentiat, 100 Main st, The Copper Output s, Age of Steel, It appears from official tables that the product of the Lake Superior copper mines for the months of April, May and June is considerably larger than for the corresponding period in 1883, Since January 1 the production of mineral has been 19,334 tons, against 12,310 tons. Last yer the lake mines produced about 40,000,000 pounds, There 1s good rea- #on to expect that this will be increased to 70,000,000 in 1884, It must be re- membered, too, that this represents the output of our Lake Superior mines alone, Arizona I counted on to produce this year 20,000,000 pounds; Montana, 4,000,000; Missouri and other places not included in the above, 2,000,000. In the aggregate, therefore, the copper pro- duct for the year will not be far from 100,000,000 pounds. Where 1s this enormous amount to be marketed! The great producers of all parts of the world are struggling for its markets. The con- sumption of the United States is not far from 78,000,000 pounds, and 10,000,000 pounds of lake are already contracted for abroad. This leaves a balance of over 100,000,000 pounds, which must be a constant drawback to any improvement in prices. e —— The total number of hogs slaughtered annually In the United States is estl. mated at 30,000,000, ‘the averaged dress- or his §5.135 which he pald for the urlg— inal check.
