Tho funeral of Mrs. Spoon is to bo held this morning at 11 o’clock, from the residence, No. 1618 Tenth avenue. The superintendent of the clty schools reports an enrollment of 2,140, and an average daily attendance of 1,936, dxclude rain, dust and cold from your house by the use of the wood and rubber weather strips, for sale by W. W. Chap- man, The funeral of Edward Murphy was largoly attended yesterday at the Catholic church, and many followed the remains to the cometery. Otto Lund was before the court yoster- day charged with assault and battery by a man whose name is Dennis. The case was continued until yesterday. The young ladies of the broom brigade who aro to appoar in the M. L. S. C. en- tertainment in Masonic hall Thanksgliv- ing night, are sald to bo getting vory pro- ficient in drill, James Nolan, who was arrested for picking the pocket of a man in Bokern- peis’ saloon last Saturday night, was yes- terday discharged, the prosecuting wit- ness failing to materialize. ““William Welch has, movedjtwo houscs from near tho iron works and placed them next to his store, corner of Tenth stroot and Fourth avenue. Ho will fit them up nicely and rent them. A street car was yesterday sent up Broadway, on the first trip of the exten- sion to the Methodist church. About half way up it jumped the track, und was brought back to the Ogzden houso in dis- gust. Tho dear old lady still tells its leaders that there is doubtabout Cleveland being o! ected, and that the democrats are not 5o confident as they wore, and atill prates about being “‘a reliable nows- paper.” Atlantic and Sioux City have patterned after Council Bluffs and passed ordi- nances liconsing the salo of pop and other beverages not prohibited by law. Ta other words, licensing saloons to run despite the state prohibitory law. The Northwestern Telephone company of Ida Girove has been organized with a capltal of 825,000, to build and operate telephone lines in Ida, Sac, Cherokeo, Plymouth, Woodbury, Winona, Harri- son and Pottawattamie counties. When the new justices Frainey is to reopen his oflice on Broad- way near Bryant street, Mr. Hendricks will probably occupy the office of Justice come in, associated with him have not been able to got any very definite tidinga of him, He has some creditors here who are also de sirous of learning of his whereabouts His family say that he Omaha, with the intention of going fur wont over tc ther westward if he could get a pass of the board of health The sttention was yesterday called to the fact thero are several cases of diptheria in the city, and the quostion arises whether houses whore there are cases, should b \uarantined, or whether there should t “diptheria here public. N definite action has been decided upon simply cards tacked up thus warning the Officer John Dann has been presented by his father with a fine piece of prop erty on upper Broadway. It has a front ago of about 150 teot, and a house, which Dunn has proceeded to occupy as a resi denco. Ho s repairing and Improving his old homo, and filling the lot and will ront that. Dann is unusaally well fixed in this world's goods for a pollceman, The remains of Miss Esther Richard son are expected to arrive on the 11:30 dummy train from Omaha this morning, and the friends of the family will meot at the Broadway depot here at that hour and procoed to the cometery. Miss Richardson wae born in St. Lous April 12, 1857, and when a babe her parents moved hero, where sho lived until 1875, whon she went to Omaha to make her home with her sister, their mother having died soveral yeara before. Mark Durgee, the happy manager of the Ogden houae, is to make his debut, and doubtless his reputation asa come- dian in the comlng presontation of “Tho Great Republic,” which is being arranged for presentation the first week In Decom- ber, and in which several hundred of the pupils of the public echools will take part. Mark is said to be an unusually good comedian, though not a profession- al, and he has been assigned the leading part, to which he will doubtless do credit, A Missouri Valley man named Becker, camo to this city with a load of hogs, got drunk, and wandering around to the city cooler, sat down on the steps and yelled for the landlord to open up and give him a night's lodging. George Guanella was sleoping up stairs, but so soundly that ho did not hear him, but two policemen were attracted from Broadway, and ac- comodated the Missouri Valley man, Yesterday he learned that the night's lodging at the city hotel cost §7.60. He had no money but a friend named Miller paid his bill, and the two went off happy. The young son of J. W. Morse is still in a critical conditlon, from the injuries received at the hands of the Allen boys, while coming from achool. The kick given young Morse in the groln seems to have caused serious internal injuries, the result of which are very serious, at the best. The boys have boen expelled trom school, but the matter should not be allowed to rest thus. According to young Morso's statoment he was used most shamefully on several occasions, and the ruflianly conduct of the Allen boys seems to havo been carriod on at other times. One of the boys went so far as to attack ono of the teachers, 1f ono-half told of them is true they should be given a term in the ceform school. Tho dear old lady called hor childron about her yesterday morning and told them that the number of readers of her sorap book had increased groatly, and that she hoped to “‘further command pub- lic confidenco as a reliable newspaper.” She doea not ssy how much she has in- creased her number of readers, or how much she has. Tur Bee is tho only paper in this part of tho world that dares to state openly its circulation, and as for ‘‘rellability” the old lady can hardly hope for getting any reputation for that, so long as the public remembers the partisan reports she made of tho last eloction, and her nonsensical claims concerning the result long after the result was known and sottled. She cannot lay much claim to reltability when she openly confesses that sometimes all tho regular force is away, and that some out sider alips in offonsive stutements. Nor can she claim relibility 8o long as she credits to the Chicago News editorials which never appeared in that paper. — Abbott, and Mr. Shurz will continue the oocupying the oflice now held by him, N. J. Bond, who has just returned from Denver, Is introducing here the Crescent mills flour, manufactured in that city. The flour ranks high and promises to be a favorite brand hero when once the public got well acquainted with it, The fellow known as “Cute,” who promised to keep out of town, returned yosterday and was quickly nabbed. He #sid he only run over from Omaha to sottle a fow bills, and that he would go right back aguin, aud a chance to do so waa given him laat evening. Tke colored church folk are trying to ralso money to complete their building and to this end give & festivalin the Knights of Pythias hall this evening Four of the young men of the church are striving to see which can raise the most money by soliciting, and the most suc- cessful is to be given a gold-headed cane 1t seems now that the proposed demo- cratic jollification here may not take place, there being cousiderablo trouble in getting enough money to meet the necessary expenses. The ‘‘barrel” has been about emptied and the attempt to get the means by subscription does not seom to meet with wuch success. As a matter of city enterprice Council Bluffs ought to thow up as well as uny of the cities of its eiza, Theic is conslderable talk cauned by the ditappearance of G sorge Edgar, the detective. De Vou & Wrianr, 504 Broadway, = N An Election Bet, One of tho novel bets ou election was pald yesterday, and ocreated quito a little flurry of interest, Lese Forman, the winner, seated in a wheelborrow, was wheeled by Will Owen from Forman's store to Mr, Forman's resldence, The wheelbarrow was fantastically adorned with an arch with brooms, ribbons, ete., and musio was furnished by Bob Hunt. ington, who, arrayed in a blue coat and brass buttons, made a wholo military band of himself, playivg a #olo on a big bass drum, A crowd of *‘kids" cheered Owen on s ho puffed and pushed, ng of haudkerchiefs from private residencos indlcated that the lndies wero watching with interest. Leo Forman seemed to mako an unusually heavy load, but investigation afterward showed that some of the boys had hidden f shot in the barrow, As often as Forman shouted for Cleveland Owen had to follow suit, with a refrain on the bass drum. On reaching the residence Owen was sorved witha big dinner, aud the affsir ended as it began, jollily. — 1teal Fatate Transfors, The following transfers were filed iu the county olerk's office yeaterday and re: ported for the Bex by J, P, McMahon, real estate agint, November 19, 1884 Frank Waterman Ainsworth, Part L and wife toC.
