And even if we admit for the sake of ar gument that his hope is groundless, that the bible is false, and salvation to eter- nal life a myth, still the mere fact that he Jonged for and sought after something beyond the confines of this poor life, is evidence of dignity of character, and the only evidenco. For, certainly. he who can give way to doubt accepts the theory that death is an otornal sleep, and rest content with his fate, has a character formed of such base materlal that in no sonwe can dignity be a characteristic thereof, no matter what his earthly suc- may be, @But if a man lives for Christ, every- thing he touches is dignified, If he seeks wealth it is not for wealth’s sake. Hence, if he does his best and fails, as far as in- fluence on his soul is concerned, he did not fail. If he succeeds, he will not be- come weary of it, as a boy with a new plaything, for he sought it not for itself, the dear old grandmother to snivelling b but for what he could accomplish with it in the uplifting of his fellow men. If he seek fame and fail, it is no failure to him, for he sought it only for influence over his fellow man, and he knows that God must have some higher urpose in withholding than in granting. He will not throw his whole being into the pursuit of some bauble of fame as Greeley and then die broken-hearted when he fails to sttaln it. Whether he attaina the object of his seeking on earth or not, by the seeking hLe will develop soul-power and that he cannot lose. By this philosophy mankind and man’s pursuits are dignified. Seeking Christ man gets his true dignity; seeking an; thing else he willingly surrenders heavenly birthright and acknowledges himself for the sake of earthly pursuits, o’nly a higher order of the animal crea- on. What shall we say then? Is there no dignity to the great of earth, who look not out beyond this life? Oertalnly not. God says: “*Take the foolish of earth to confound ‘he wise, and weak things to confound the mighty.” : Only those are wise who turn many to righteousness, and they shall shine like stars in the firmament, forever and ever. —— ‘Wrought Iron Ranges atreduced prices, De Vol ?& right, 504 Broadway. o — Orders by telephone for flour, feed, wood, coal, and hay, will be promptly filled by Cook & Cooper, 700 Broad- way. e —— PERSONALS, Joseph Jones came in off of the road last night.
