{ P——— Y BEE COUNCIL BLUFFS TUESDAY NOVEMBER 11 — JOUNCIL BLUFFS Tuesday Morning November 11, SUBSCRIPTION RA ByCarrler = = = = = = = 9 por = #10.00 por yosr OFFICE paarl Street, Noar Broadwsy MINOR MENTION, Seo J. Reiter's new fall stock of cloth Richards & Moedinger have oponed a meat shop at 821 Matn sireet. Dealors will find bargains at Seaman’s closing out sale, on usual terms. Remember the entertainment at the rooms of the Y. M. C. A, this evening. Joff Groen was yostorday fined for be- ing drunk and having hada tussle with Ofticer Towns. Edward Watts, a butcher employed at 803 Main street, yesterday morning cut his hand badly. Leave to marry was extended ‘yos- terday to Frank Darlin and Eda E, Withrow, both of thiscity. August Anderson has commenced suit againat the Council Bluffe water works company for $100, claimed for labor, Charles Saunders, known bottor as “iCute,” was yosterday fined §9.60 for dis- turbing the peaco ot Wagner's saloon. The examination of Qadu on a charge of picking the pockets of a Red Oak man, is to be held before Judge Ayles- worth to-day. F. P. Jones, cashler at the Wabash freight depot has moved into his new residence on Third atreet between Eighth and Ninth avenues, Frank Jackson yesterday pleaded guilty to atealing a olock and some other artl- cles from Mr. Jennings, and was sen- tonced to thirty days in jail. During the democratic pow-wow Satur- day night, some reckless shooter senta ball through one of the large plate-glass windows in Andy Keating's store, Tickets are selling well for the dance of the police force at Masonic hall on the evening of the 20th. The boys ought to be encouraged and give them a rousing benefit. It would be a good scheme for the democrats to clear up the remnants of the burnt tar barrels left on Broadway, before going over to Omaha to clatter up the atreets thero. There were several Y. M. C. A. work- ers from abroad who visited tho rooms here yesterday. Among them were throe from Lincoln, three from Weeping ‘Water, and three from York, Neb, ‘While hunting about for reasons why the insurance rates have boen increased, would 1t not b well to see whether {t is not because the insurance men consider the fire department as}efficiont as under Chief Temploton? The roport reaches hero of the burning of a barn belonging to Louis Mincel, living near Mr. Birchard’s, about eight miles from the city. When the infor- mant left, there was some danger of tho house going too, The saloonists aro paying up thoir li- censes quito promptly. The mayor says that so faras ho can learn, this ie the only city in the state that is gotting a rovenuo from ita saloons, although they are running in other cities. A document is belng circulated and re- | 8till ycsterday colving numerous signatures, protesting against the advancement of rates of insurance, and agrecing to withdraw In- suranco from companies, thus increasing tho rates., It is claimed that in some cases rates have beeu advanced 40 per cent, while the promise was mado of cheaper rates after wator works wero es- tablished. A traveling man at the Pacific houso, who has been celebrating too freely, tried to sober off on chloral and got 5o heavy a dose that he came near passing over, whero elections are no more. His con- dition yesterdsy morning was very ularming, and it was only by the most persistent and skillful efforts that his A HOME CONTEST. linc Snpervisors Ran Against & Suag | in Canvassing the Vote, A New Elector May be Ordered in the Fourth Ward. Promise of a Pow-Wow. Board of Supervisors, November eca- sion, Monday, November 10, 1884 In aceordance with law, the board of supervisors of Pottawattamio county, lowa, met in regular session. Presont—S. G. Underwood, R. Kirk iraham and H. wood, S, B. Frum, A. C. Rishton, This being the time tixed by law for the canvass of votes cast at the general olectlon held on the 4th day of Novem- ber, 1884, in the soveral precincts of Pottawattamio county, Iowa, and the re- turns from all the precincts having boen made, the board actingas county can vassors procended with the canvass ot sald votes publicly, and canvassed the votes of the Kirst, Second and Third precincts of the olty of Conncil Bluffs, and upon examination of the poll book of the Fourth precinct, s diecropancy was found in the number of votes cast, and the number of votes tallied, and the ballot hox for that precinct was sent for, as one of the clerks of the election at that precinct, who was present, claimed that a sheet of paper left in the ballot box with tho names of the voters on that should be in the poll book returned to the suditor, and upon the arrival of the township clerk with the ballot box, W. F. Sapp made a verbal protest againat opening tho ballot box for the Fourth precinct and against the consid- oring of any papers or any other th.ns that may be therein contained on the ground that the same was illegal and not suthorized by law. And after a hearing from several parties present on motion the board adjourned to meot this morn. ing at U o'clock. The above is the olicial record of the doings of the board of Superyisors yes- torday. It Is claimed that the clerks in Fourth ward presinct filled thelr po'l book and the additional names were writ- ton on a sheet of logal cap, which was ac- cidentally left In the ballot box instead of being attached to the poll book. This is snid to account for the fact that the board of supervisors found yesterday in canvass- ing the vote that tho poll book showed only 960 numes, while the returns show- ed 998 votes cast. It is predicted that thls will give rise to somo contests. County Clerk Street is said to have got some information in regard to frauds having been perpetrated in some of the polling places outside of. Council Bluffs, and is consulting as to what he can do absut it. The race he- tween several of the condidates is thought to bo so closo that the result would be changed by a contest over the Fourth ward alone, Judge Aylesworth, who ls in doubt about his having a majority, was hunting up his legal points yestor- IWONAL Mrs, Dr, Hilton has gone to Chicago on & visit to her mother., W. B. F. Clayton was in the city yoster- day looking after this county’s part of the £30,000 to be contributed by Iowa to the Now Orloans oxposition, The un- derstanding is that at the next meeting of the legislatuao this amount will be covered by the state tax, butin the mesntime each county is expacted to psy its share, which will doubtless be refun- ded by the state. The county board here does not seem favorably inclined to ad- vancing the money, thinking it is not strictly logal, although feeling favorablo to the enterprise and in case the board will not arrange it, it is the intention to get twenty or thirty citizens tosign note, securing the money thus, —— Wrought Tron Ranges atreduced prices, Do Vol & Wright, 604 Broadway, Window shades at ccst to close them out.
