The county board meets on next Mon. day to canvass the vote. H. R. Stowart, the crayon artiat, has just completed a potrait of the late Frank Keeline. Mr. James Burns has purchased a residence on Tenth avenue, No. 1,616, and has already taken possession. | The Methodist church choir concert In Masonic hall this evening will prove a treat which all music lovers should share in, The young people of the Baptist church have a soclable this evening at the resi- dence of Charles L.oucks, No, 128 Fair- view avenue. Mr. E. Huntington has received a tele- nizance to appear betore the | distetot court. This will probably bo the | end of the matter. pathy expressed for the young man by his friends and acquaintances here, he seeming to be a very steady, straight sort of & boy. A large number of workingmen and waiting There is much sym teamsters have been kept anxiowsly for thele pay, the city council not ge'ting any quorum for a meeting at which to allow the bills. These city politicians promise the workingmen a great deal, when appealing for their votes, but when once in oftice they allow teamsters to wait their pleasure to pay them monoy, which they need greatly for living expenses, and then pay them in warrants, which they have to sell for just what the money-shovers choose to give. With city warrants, as they are the least the city can do, is to allow the bills promptly. Tue Bre wos in greater demand in Council Bluffs yesterday than ever. Its apecial dispatch concerning the report of Blaine’s illness was a “‘scoop” on all the papers in this part of the west, and while the dear old grandmother was smirking over her unparalleled effort to get up six columns of telegraphic news, Tue Bk as usual came out with nearly ten columns, The Nonpariel's telegraph was set, too, in brevier, while Tur Ber set its in solid minfon. Instead of old plates that had been passed along the line of all the country papers, Tur Bre set up in ite gram from his cousin, Congressman Kane, of Utah, saping that his calling and election are sure for another term. A team belonging to Mr. McKinzie made a bold dash up Broadway, and collided with a team and wagon belong- ing to Mr. Person. The wreck was not a very bad one. Permit to wed was yesterday glven Wm. 8. Jones and Sarah Ann Thayer, both of Washington township, and they hastened to Justice Schurz's office where “the knot was tied tight. A state conventlon of Y. M. C. A's is now in session at Omaha to-day, to-mor- row and Sunday. All young men from this city are invited to be present at as many sessions as possible. Lee Bennett, the enterprising news- man at the Pacific, yesterday morning hung out a bulletin, “Blaine very ill. See daily Bee,” and then get got behind his counter to meet the rush, which came and soon gobbled up his supply. A bullet was sent into J. W. Morse’s house the other day, from some mysteri- ous source. It came crashing through the window, and and it was a miraculous escape for Mrs, Morse who had hardly a moment before risen from her seat in the direct line of the bullat, The funeral of little Jakie Stewart, son of J. T. Stewart, was held yesterday morning. The servico was very tender and touching as conducted by Rev. Mr, Mackey, and the attendance was very large, the little fellow being a remarka- ble favorite in the entire community. A. F. Schanck, the manager of the roller rink, has made arrangements for musio at the rink every evening after to- night and has reduced the price of ad- mission to gents to fifteon cents and the use of skates to ten conts. Ladies' ad- mission will hereafter bo ten cents and use of skates te them ten cents. He believes in popular prices. A man named Callender, who is em- ployed at Goos’ hotel in Omaha, appeared at police head(uarters with a very bloody head, and claimed that a hack driver had bim with the but end of a whip be- cause ho would not pay one dollar for belng taken to the transfer. Ho was told to appear before the court and gt out a warrant, but did not show up again. One of the minute men of the fire de- partment has resigned because the posi- tion was not very lucrative. The firat month he received 80 conts, in general fund warrants. Last month there were five alarms and he received §3.20 in gen- eral fund warrants, while bestdes being on hand at all hours of day and night, ready to go to any fire, he gota new §8 pair of pantaloons torn in putting out a burning chimney. He says somebody else may now work for glory. There was intense excitement on the streets here yesterday over the reports concerning the election, First one crowd would shout and then the other, and all norts of predictions were made, and dis- cussions entered into, The newspaper offices were besieged by inquirers, and every possible hint of information was grasped eagerly. Business was loft to look after itself, whilo all hands spent their time in talking over the news, Last evening at the residence of W. 8, Mayne a reception was tendered Reov, Dr. McCrary, the now pastor of Broad- way Methodlst church, thus affording the people & pleasant opportunity of meeting and welcoming him socially, Dr. Me. Crary has opened his ministrations here under very auspiclous circumstances, and has made a favorable impression, and is given & hearty welcome with en- thuslastic promises of receiving cordial and swrong support in his work, The young man Osborne, who was ar- rested on election day for illegal voting, had a hearing bofore George F. Wright, United States commissioner, yosterday. The charge against Osborne was that he had not resided here long enough to en- title him to & vote, but J. P Goulden, his employer, declared that he had, aud there being no evidence showing to the contrary, the young man was discharged George J. Walker, telephone manager here, was released from jail yesterday, where he has been tarrying ou the charge of embezzlement of $187 from the tele- phone comp: His father srrived here from Nebrasks sud fixed up the amount of the shortage, and after paying the «osts, the young man was released on his own oflice fresh readlng matter. Added to these advantages, Tne Ber's reports have received many compliments for their fairness. The local scribe of the Council Blufts Herald evidently ‘‘has 'em bad.” He claims to have discovered that “In the central precincts of this city, in the costly homes where the foot falls on costly tapestry, where the ear hears only the rustle of silks and satins, the eye revels in the costliest works of art, there is a society of fair philosophers with the purest of blue blood in their veins, the rarest of knowlegde in their minds and the grandest of purposes in contempla- tion, whose range of thought and ethical discourses would have put to blush the sages of the Hegelian system and even embarrassed the metaphysicians at the Concord school of philosophy. The Cri- tique of Kant, the Cosmos of Humboldt, the Elective Affinities of Goethe are but some of their letters which make up the alphabet of their discourses.” s L. C. Arbuthnot’s millinery opening takes place on Friday and Saturday, November 7th and 8th. —— Order hard wood of P. Overton, A e L. C. Arbuthnot's millinery opening takes place on Friday and Saturday, November 7th and 8th, peaanls o MYNSTER AS JUDGE. Ayleswerth Being Promoted the Mayor Fills the Vacaucy. Alderman James to Resume His Seat In the Council, It seems pretty well scttled that Judge E. E. Aylesworth of the supreme court has been elected judge of the district court, the republican candidate, Judge Loofbourow, being defeated by not far foom 200. The placing of Judge Ayles- worth on the district bench, leaves the woolsack of the superior court with no one to Bit upon. The statute provides that in caso of a vacanoy in the oflice of judge of the superior court, the mayor shall appoint some one to fill it, with the approval of the council, the person to appointed to cancy in the aldermanic board, and a special election will have to be called to | fill the place. The wires are working quietly and some of the pullers have much to say about it, but if Judge Aylesworth is elected, as now appears, the above will be about the programmoe to be followed. — Closing Out, To close the business I offer my stock of 206 Main Street, - NORENE & LANDSTROM, NMerchant Tailors. The election of Judge Aylesworth to the district court will pro- bably cause quite a change about among the = city oflicials, It is more than likely that Mayor Vaughan will appeint in Judge Aylesworth's place, Alderman William Mynster. This seems probably because Vaughan thinks there is no such Jawyer in the world as Mynator, and the two are great political cconies, Mynster being equally enthusiastic in his boliof that ne such mayor ever lived s Vaughav, 1f Mynster is named as judge of the supreme cours there is littlo doubt out that the council will appreciato the appointment, but hero too there is a little hitch, It will take a majorlty of the council to approve the appointment. Alderman James has resigned and Alderman Myuster, a chairman of the committee, has reported that by his resignation Alderman James has insulted the council, and unless he apologizes he should be allowed to retire, Alderman James has kept away from the council chamber, aud insisted that he would have no more to do with the mat- ter. 1f he should cling to this deter- mwination, or if withdrawing his res'gna- tion he should sit in council snd oppose Wynster's appointment, this would eount a8 one vote against him, Alderman Siedentopf being & republican would hardly vote for Mynster, and ho has no groat love for him anyway, This would make two votes agalnst him, and Alderman Myuster ¢ uld hardly vote to approve his own appointment. This would leave two votes only for him Aldermen Goise, MeMuhan and Keating are lews than a ma)ority. To overcome this hitch the plan will probably be adopted for Myuster to make peace with Jame:, and pointers indioato that this is beig done, orman Jamen is willing to withdraw his resigna- tion if the offensive resolutions offered by Alderman Myunaster, and adopted by the council, are expunged from the records, Alderman Mynster iswilling todo this but ssy he did not mean to insult the council Yesterday there were two attempts to got a quorutn of the council—one in the sud one in the afternoon, but James was present at the afternoon gathering, and sald that he has insisted that Jamos should openly | Per F, K.
