Sarr, Chief of Stafl, —— Comfort diness, At the opera house Sunday night Rev. A, K. Bates preached on the text, *‘I will nover leave thee nor forsake thee.” He said: God has not tendered any blessing so comprehensive and desirablo as the gift of his own presence. There is no facul- ty for which we can eo readily ana gladly account, as the faculty of man’s social nature, and God seems to havo stamped that upon us in several waya. He has sent us union and family to gratify that desire. He has made it the disposition of mankind to seek cities be causo they are conters of residence. We love to be where people are, People sometimes fall into a condition of mind produced by disease or disaster, in which it is desirable to be away from man, but this arises from an unhealthy condition of the mind. The social nature of man is also dis- covered in another way in relations which are called business relations. Not bocause there is strength in union, but because man loves companionship, in the very time of his labor as well as in his family relations and social life. There isno feeling in the human heart so bitter as that of ucter loneliness, We are ab- sent from people whom we know and those with whom weo feel at home, Hence, the sense of home-sickness, I have boen told by those who lived in San Francisco when a severe shock of earthquake occurred there, that the sen- sation was like none other that a man can experience, Fooling that the very solidity of the earth upon which we stand is now rest- less, and none can tell what shall be the outcome, Still yon words of comfort and counsel, and even prayer, do little or 1o good in such & time. Man must de- pond only upon the grace and mercy of God, until he can reach solid ground, Then, in time of temptation, posltively in time of sin, when men are ro busy with their own arrangements that they man agreeing to enter the state, within a like period if Blaine is elected. They agree in tho event of a failure to carry out the matrlmonial agroement, that the forfeit shall be one of the beat suits of clothes to bs had in the city. The ladles and tailors will wateh the outcome with renewed interest, This evening at Bard's hall the ‘‘Mock Congreas,” conducted by the young men and {ladies of the Y. M, C, A, will be held, when all are invited to attend and a very amusing and instructive entertain. ment is promised. Amongst the notables who will be present the following deputa- tion from the *Equal Rights party will advocate their principles: Susan B, Anthony, Ellen J. Foster, Dr. Mary Walker, Belva Lockwood, Mother Stuart, Matilda Fletcher, Phoebe Couzins, Eliz, Cady Stanton, R Books which are punlished at 1,25 are now belug eold for 50 cents at Seaman's, e — The roller skate mostly in favor seems to be the one with the 2} inch brass. lined wheels, the largest in use. Temptation s & suflorivg that comes only from sin, We are alone, and it has fastened itself upon us. We are labor- ing to a great disadvantage, and strug- gling with an obstacle in the way. The loneliness is terrible, When the time comes in which we yield, this is the time when tho presence of a friend would save us, and shed a ray of light upon the memories of darkness. In old age there is o sense of very se- vere loneliness, People show the aged & manner of friendship, but not such as they once had, How well applies this text in every in. stance, “‘I will never leave you nor for- e COMMEROIAL, OOUNOIL BLUFFS MARKET, Wheat—No. 1 milling, 60@65; No. 3, b0; rejected 8540, Corn—New, 25@25, Oats—FJr local purposes, 85, Hoy—86 00@7 00 por ton; baled, 60@60. 0ot MbAI—1 50 per 100 pornds, Wood—Good supply; prices at yards, 6 00@ 700.
