This system is woll known in European countries and is daily attracting mere attention this side the water. Francois Delsarte was born in France, in 1811, He was left destitute at a ten- der age, but while still a more child showed signs of the power which after- ward openod to him the doors of the no- bility and made Louls Philippe acknow- ledge him as his peer. Yours epent in research and hard study enabled Delsarte to elaborate & system for the study of expresson which regener- ated the French stage and bids fair to so the American theatre to a higher Not satisfied with the ability to s beautiful and expressive gestures himself Del |hmlr>n[uhllulwl}(-mnunvh,nh ing and studying to why a given motion always means {he same thing. He not only knew that a certain movement of the face ex pressed surprise, snother rago, another delight; that one gesture of the arm was threatening, another inviting, another pleading, but he knew why tho diffrent motions produced the difter and it was through this knowledge llnn he waa able to teach to others the art of oxpression, He discarded all the existing methods of teaching gesture as inade. quate to form an actor or speaker and trom the laws which he had discovered of the natural motions of all parts of tho body he prepared s got of gymnastics the practico of which gave frecdom and grace to the motions of the body. These gym tics sorved not merely the end of ex- ercise, but led directly to the gestures used by man in every life. Slow, rythmical motions were practiced until the feeling of joints left tho student's body, his angularity gave way to grace, and what was at first an exercise became through practice a habit of moving beau tifully, Besides walking with ease and grace the student found himself able to command an audienco by his more poiso, to st down and rieo gracefully, to knoel, to fall, to perform, in short, all of ths actions and courtesies of cverday life in a gracoful manner, Delsarto taught as one of hin laws the “Doctrine of Special Organs,” that is, that each part of the body has its own m aning when used in gesture, that walk- ing with the head advanced created one impression, walking with the chest ad- OCTOBER 25 183, 'nhn ll.‘lnu4‘|‘ ITISASPECIFIC ITISRELIABLE, ror in curing Kidney & Liver Dright's Din} Troubles, oae, Patna i the Dok, Lotns Badder, Urinary bkt b aud Liver Disoascs, o onS Diavetes, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Delsar- to believed that by constantly practicing noblo gestures ono could create the emo tion expressed by tho motion and that one who habituaily held himself in an attitude of self respect and self-control would ultimately acquire those ualities if lacking, or strengthen them if weak. “Know thyself!” is a command which Delsarte strove to obey. Francois Delsarte lett his un- finished work to his son Gustave Del- sarto who also died a fow yoars ago.
