They Do Not Meet With Much Sue- coss Another has been added to the numerous attempts at incendiavism here, and like most of those of late it proved unsuccessful. Tho building thus sought to be burned is that occupied by Nash Bros., the horse shoers, No, 719 Broad- way. The fire was diecovered about 4 o'clock yesterday morning, the smoke pouring into the Colorado house, the ad- joining building, in such quantitics as to arouse the landlord, P. P, Kuhn and hie wife, who thought the hotel on fire, Investigation showed that some one had crowded under the floor of Nash Iiros.’ shop, gaining entrance at the rear, and had started to blaze under the building near the front, where it would be diflicult to detect it. The firo was put out be- fore it had done any very serious damage. The building 1s ownod by George M. Brown, THE OOMING HURRAH, ™ Elaborate r.-m_»:;;.:»- Being' Made for the Repubiican Dex - stration, Already much interest has been awak- encc by the announcement that the re- publicans will have a great gathericg and demonstration hero on Friday evening of next weok, Octobor #lst. Tho affair promises o exceed anything yet secen in Council Bluffs, Bpecial excursion trains are to come in over all roads, returning the same night, and half rates have been secured, and bands are to be carried free. One of the novel fea- tures of the parade will be the participation of several marching clubs of ladies from surrounding towns, Goy ernor Sherw is to be here, and will serve as the grand marshal as well as he one of the speakers, Among the other notables to bo present aro J. J, Ingalls, Olark vr, J P, Dolliver, Senators Manderson, of Nebraska, and Wilson, of Towa, Mayor Audrson, Hon, John Green, Henry O'Connor, Judge J. W. McDill, attendant upon alooholism.” LAND MONOPOLISTS IN TEXAS- “Cof Fonemg in the Western Part of the Statp, The K Cor, St. Louis Globe-Democrat, There is no doubt that the fencing of [ ** western Toxas means supremacy to the cattle kings, The stockman, in inclos- ing his pastnre has gobbled up overy piece of watered land in his re; will find fence lines running zigzag to- ward every point of the compass, 8o that every little water hole and pond may be enclosed and taken away from any stick there may be on the outside of the pasture, When continucd draught (and thathappens often in this country)causes the water on the high pratries to dry up tho cattle king will round up his stock, run them into his_fresh pastures, where there will bo an abundance of grass and water, but the poor outsider who is not wealthy enough to fence has elther got to see his stock die or drive them into some other locality for water, and that in this country, in a droughty timo, is sometimes a formidable undertaking, Taking the fonced districts as & general thing, they are unsafo ground for cattle herding, for a man who has no pastures to fall back on is liable to be starved out at any time for lack of water, or even grass, It is claimed by the advocates of free grass, also, that the leasing of theso state lands for twelve years will retard immi- gration, and poor men will b kept out of cheap homes. With our exporience of this country we do not think it possible for a “‘poor” immigrant to make a living by farming these lands. True, the soil . |8 firzt-class, but the rainfall is not here to make crops, and no water for irrigation purposes. The Dallas Herald, a short time ago published a description of *‘the - | thrifty farms in the neighborhood of Big Springs in Howard county.” We would say, right here, those farms can not be found, and farming and gardening west of Abilene, in Taylor county, Tex., has so far been & completa failure, and anyone coming here with an idea he can make a living out of the soil (grazing al- ways excepted) will soon leave a wiser and sadder man, Taking these facts, and facts they un- doubtedly are, it is a question whether the advocates of lease law are not right when they claim that the law is a good one, for it enriches the state school fund by the amount of rents paid by the leasees, whereas, jwilh free grass these same stockmen would have the use of the range and pay nothing for it. —— The Def: de adies, Queen Victoria was recently swindled out of fifteon pounds by a beggarly scoundrel who pretended to want it for a charitable purpose, But many other women have been robbed of health by overwork and underpay. Enfeebled and languid women with shattered nerves find strength and comfort in Brown's Iron Bitters. Mrs. Amanda Layson Crawfordville, Ind., writes, ‘I uses Brown’s Iron Bittera for general ill health, with good results,” It cured dyspepsia, weakness and malaria, e Natfonal Reform at Hastings. respondence to Tie Bee, Hasr Neb., October 21, 1884—Two apents of the religious amendment movement have recently been operating in Neb,, Rev. J. S. T. Milligan, of Kansas, and Roev. M. A, Gault, of Towa, This movement is aim- ing to secure moral anchorage for the government by having in the constitu- tion a recognition of the Divine law as the standard of legislation, The associa- tion has beon in existence sinco 1803, and hasa thorough organization, It is working through the press, platform and pulpit to educate public sontiment to the most radical reform ideas. The republicans are shy of the movement bo- causs they say it is ramming home powder for the St. John party, Rovs. Gault and Milligan preached in the Baptist, Mothodist and Presoyter- ian churches on Sabbath, They held a convention in the Congregational church Monday and Tuesday, and also a union service Sabbath afternoon, The result has been to awaken considerable interest in the subject. Rev. W. F. Ringland, president of a young and promising Pres- byterian college, heartily endorses tho cause: 50 also do the pastors of ihe Bap- nd Methodist churches. The meet- ings were generally well attended. The speakers claimed that there wastoo much truth in what infidels claim, that our forefathers in framing our national con- stitution retired (iod from politics, In refusing to give place to the christian theory of government, they incorporated in the constitution the infidel theory, and now infidels claimed that all our christian usages were unconstitu- tional. Our government violates the Sabbath by its mail service, its congross and railroad corporations, The bible is excluded by force of law from many of our achools, The liquor traflio is liconsed by national authority and 60,000 lives pay the forfoit every year. In sowme cities the social ovil is under the protection of law and Mormonism entrenches itself be- hind the constitution, as does the Sabbath breakers and profane swearers, until the time seems to bs near, when God by fires, storms, floods and earth- quakes, will blow us out of existence, Col. John 0. {eefer, Licutenant Gov {ernor Mauning, Judge Lyman and John | Y. Stone, The opera house has been Sumething must bodone, or the moral ruin will be complete. Would not a de- baucheo in the presidential chair, be the OCTOBER 24 1851, fitting finalo of moral terpitude and make us as a Sodom and seal our doom e Thurston on the Hampag Butler C. nty Pres John M, Thurston, the silver tongued political attorney of the Union Pacific railroad, addressed the people of David City on Monday night. The sccom- plished gentleman's coon stories had a vory ploasing effect on the audience, and the veople absolutely forgot that the re- nowned politioal boss, whom the great corporation employa to handle their con- ventions and corrupt their logislators was before them, Ho does amplo credit to the great monupoly’s judgment—they know how to appreciate brains—shrowd cusses are they whom Gould condescends to employ. Hoe found great fault with the democrats for professing tariff reform principles and then voting against the Mexican reciprocity treaty No, the democrats are not trifling with great questions in the intorest of a fow Illinois plow factories and Jay Gould's Mexican railrond schomes. 3 A e Q SPECIAL NOTICES.
