» 0 DAILY BR- oo IL BLUFFS TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 30 e THE DAILY BEE. QOUNCIL B BLUFFS. 30 Tuesd ay Morning Sept. RATES| IPTION - = = = 30 conta per weck OFFICE: No. 7 Poar] Street, Near Broadway MINOR MENTION. See J. Reiter's new fall stock o f cloth Col. Jesse Harper is to speak here this evening. The Magic Mirror to-night at the expo- sition and good music, H.gRhoads and Mrs. R. A, Nye, of Avoca, were yesterday given permit to wed. “ A number of Knights of Pythias leave to-day for Sioux City to attend the grand lodge. Since the firat of January last thero has been 320 marriage licenses issued in this county. The United States officials have now secured offices in Burnham, Tulley & Co's. building. A wagon drawn by two cows yesterday was a gentle reminder of old times to ihe old settler. Lovers of beautiful and artistic effects should not fall to see the ‘“Magic Mirror"” at the exposition to-night. T. M. Hunter has been appointed U, 8, commissioner to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Marshal Key. Excavation commenced yesterday for the new house to be built by Mrs. M. A, Smith, corner of Mynster and Seventh streets. THE BEER GARDEN. How the Sunday Night was Stopped—No More Sun day Business, For some weeks past there has been an to atop the Sunday night danccs qarden and to close the or Sunday, but b th have seemed to be rather diflicult tasks., The hotel en claim that they cannot keep their bara closed tight on Sunday and satisfy their transcient customers, The saloon en claim it s not fair play compel them to close and let the b men have full swing. The beer arden proprietor thinks Sunday his best day, and that while the down town sa- loons reap thelr harvest on week days, he ought to have his on Sunday. The chiof of polico has ordered the saloons and beer gardens closed on Sunday. Sunday night one of Tue BEe men learning that the beer garden was run- ning full blast, and chancing to meet offi cer Hurley on upper Broadway tackled him about it. The officer seemed sur. prised. ““Why,” he sald, “I went up there a while ago with orders from the chief for them to shut up, and they promised to do 80 at once.” Tne Bre man and Hurley then went to the beer garden on a tour ot observation. They found the dance going on lively, and the crowd was not the most select in the world, The polico officer reminded the proprietor pretty sharply of the or- ders to closo up, The latter protested against obeying. *'Why, I might just as well shut up entirely as to stop the Sun- day night dance.”” Officer Hurley did not know what to do, and doubted wheth- er his instructions and authority went far enough to warrant his arresting the pro- priotor and his wife, who scemed as much interosted as any one. The officer con- cluded to seek further counsel. Chief Skinner had gone to bed at Neu- mayer's hotel, and Hurley woke him up. Skinner said that the beer garden was in the outskirts of the city, and perhaps it was just as well to let it run, and if any- body wanted to complain then the police make thearrests, With this understand- ing Hurloy went back to his beat; and Tik Bre man strolling along down the Mrs. John Shadden, who was thrown from a wagon on circus day, is recover- ing from her injuries more rapidly than was expected. The marriage of P. J, Ewing, of Nel- son, to Mrs. Mary M. Sprink, of this city, takes place in St. Francis church this morning. Mrs. Jane Hotherington is having her sanity passed upon by the commlssioners for the insane, with a view of having her taken to the asylum. On account of the democratic prima- rien the council did not meet last even- ing. They will meet this afternoon to open bids for the improvement of Indian crook, It in said that Davy Mottaz, who sorved us efficiently as city jatlor, and who haa filled other positions faithfully is liable to bo nominated for constable by the republicans, The United States circuit court met in session yesterday. Judge Love, who has beeen suffering so from a carbunclo near lig knee, is at home, and Judge Shiras, who is to sitin his place, conld not acrive until last night. There ate still many births, deaths and marriages to bo reported to the clerk of the county, the law requiring such reports and imposing a penalty for negloct. The number thus far reported for the year past is; birtha 350, deaths 67, Yesterday one of Rockwell's trucks, loaded with cases of dry goods, tipped over at the Northwestern freight depot. Several trucks have got stalled there lately and one other fell over, caused by tho bad road leading to the platform. Wall McFadden, who has o instant in senson and out of season with his mar- tial band, av all republican gatherings and soldiers reunions, fs looking for a nomination as constable. He has had much experience to fit him for such a po- sition, The man Egzan, arrested for attompt- ing to burglarize Hoflmayr's mill Sunday, was in court yestorday and gained a con- tinuance of two weeks to enable him to get testimony to show that ho wasn't that kind of a fellow, but that he was an honest man, and engaged in selling Cor- liss engines. Have the aldermen and city officials forgotten the promise made by the Union Pacific railway company to lay a double track and run dummy trains overy half- hour! This promise was made and re- peated, and made and was a part of the agroement by which the Union Pacific got the £10,000 advance devoted to it. There was a report thst one of Pinker- ton's detectives arrestod a man yestorday morning at the transfer who was said to be a counterfeitor, and that he had §400 in counterteit money on his person when arrested, that he was one of the gang whom the officers had been looking for, Inquiry of the government oflicials here failed to confirm the report. There was & lively racket at the corner of Broadway and Pear] streets yeeterday about noon, It seems that Charles Al. len, who has been driving express wagon for Billy Lewis, had some griev- ance, real or imagined, snd anexpectedly went for Lowls with a sling shot. He only got iu one blow, cutting Lewis' chin, While Lewis gave him one or two terri- ble thumps, causing the claret to cover Allen's face. Allen was arrested at once an 1t is predicted by some of the knowing democrats that Broadbeck will be the nominee for recorder. Some of those who want to yet the nomination for county clerk are urzing the nominstion of Me, Cramer, of Avoca, as recorder, it seemiog that Counc 1 Blufls shall not de. mand both nominatione, Among those named as possible capturers of the nomi nation for county clerk is William Pat. ton, Mr, Ware isalso talked of, and stroot, chanced to meet Mayor Vaughan. *‘What are you going to do about the beer garden, mayor? It seems to be run- ning just the same as if orders had not been issued.” 80 officer Towns was just telling me. I've boen away, you know, and I have been trying to have the saloon men settle these questions among themsclves. They say the hotel bars won't close Sunda and make that an excuse for keeping open. | am going vo issuo orders this woek for every bar, hotel and all, to be closed tight on Sundays. But abeut this beer garden and dance—come on, let's go up and sew Skinner. PALACH L] The Successful Opening of a Very COreditable Exposition, I The Woman's Exchange opened its ex position at the skating rink last eyening. I'h justly earned to keep up day after day, and probably d to see an attendance was large, and the praise will cause the attendance increate, Those who expe ordinary church fair, were most happily 103 MAIN STREET’ surprised. The building had its exterior adorned by flags, and the interior presen- ted a brilliant appearance, lighted by the . lamps, and the booths having ar- electr ranged very showingly a stage, with drop curtains, scenery etc, has been built at one end of the great hall, and in front of Council Bluffs, this is a beautitul grooping of flowers and plants, About the of the rink, are stalls or booths arranged much after the fashion of a great exposition. Not only have the ladies themselves some fine displays of needlo work and art, fancy articles and tempting jellies and fruits, but the merchants ot the city have taken groat pains to make pleasing displays. Among them are Harkness Bros., Cas- sady, Orcutt & French, S. S. Keller, Cooper & McGee, Beebe & Co., J. J. Bliss, J. Mueller, C. B. Jacquein, J, M. Chapman also makes an art_display. L ANDE ‘The success which the ladies have met with from the start, and the appearance of the hall, naturally lead to the «uery, why cannot the farm association, or some other permanent organizasion take upjthe work which the women have so richly sturted, and organize a permanent expo- sition, 8o that every fall Council Blufls may have such a showing, or an even larger and better one / This exposition as is generally under- stood, is for the benefit of the Presbyte- rian church, and to help along the new building enterprise. The exposition is to be open every afternoon after 1 o'clock, andevery even- ing. [Entertainments are arranged for each evening, and with refreshments and good music the place is made very attrac- tive and pleasant for all who visit it. Musical Instruments of Every Description TOS&FANCY GOODS The littlo mayor then hastened to in- terview Chief Skinner. Ho told the chief to take men enough with him up to the beor-garden, and seo that the order for closing was carried out, and tho dance stopped, and if not obeyed, to arrest the propriotor and his wife. Then the chiof of police, with officers Towns and Hurley, marched up to the beer-garden. It looked to be business, then, and it was not long before the music was stopped and ths lights went out. 1t was none too noon, for the crowd had got tougher, and a fight was just starting when the blace was closed. ~ Officer Hurley was left to see that tho place was kept closed, PARTING WITH A PASTOR. Rev J, 7, Armstrong Bids Farewell to the Broadway Methodist Ohurch, The congregation that assembled in the |2 2 M. E. church on Sunday evening last ex- pecting to hear the Rev. J, Z, Armstrong deliver the first of a series of lectures that had been announced, on the subject of the “Disposition of Man,” were somo- what astonished by the intelligence that Mr. Armstrong, who has for the last two years occupied the position of pastor of the M. E. church in this city, has accept- od a pastoral position in an eastern city, for which place he expects to leave this week, and that a new minister has been appointed to take charge of the field here. For this reason tho series of lectures was not commenced, and instead, the pastor bestowed upon his sudionce a fow words of farowell, He pressed the mem- bora to extend to the new pastor a warm woleome, and spoke encouragingly of the progress the church had made during the last two years, bothfinancially and spirit- unlly, and expressed the most earnest hopes that it might continue to prosper. Ho exorted the mombers to action and industry; consequent upon a liberal distribution of money among the poor and needy, and rominded the church of the obligations under which asa church, itstands, to render assistance to all manuner of chari- table and christian institutions, In conclusion he said: **When we woet again, it may bo * beyond tho river.’ Your spirit will then be free. We will then look upon the past, and all the transactions back there in Council Bluffs will stand out 1n full noon-tide splendor. You will see it wel! then, and remember how merciful God was to you and to me as wo went stumbling through with that hard work, ““Now may God help us so to live? that we may got there,—all of us—on tho other side of the river. 1f wo allow the world to have too strong a hold upon us, and take too many chances, aud carry this on, too long and late in the day, we may fail to got there, And then we will huve another kind of recollection, It will be that of privileges and opportuni ties, aud glorious chances, of which we have failed to take advantage, We will remember how we thought of everything except the salvation of our souls. How this was A-\I\I\dul to us, and we sald ‘1 will not," and we are loat. May help us to forget everything else and hulp us to pross forward to the mark of our high calling in Christ Jesus, that our salvation may be sure in the end.” B Ieal Exstate Tiansfors, The following transfers were filed in the county clerk’s oflice yestorday and re- ported for Tur Be by P, J.
