F Goodman,” —r— The Breed of Hogs and the Feed, When getting ready to fatten the hogs for winter killing it may not have oc. curred to many that there is profit or loss in feeding according to the breed to which the herd belongs. A farmer may foed liberally, and have no difliculty in getting his hogs in good condition, no matter what breed they may bo; but thero is economy in feeding for cortain results, and any system practiced which demands an excess leads to waste and should be avoided. Some farmers are very partial to largo hogs, preferring to keep them until they are from a year and a half to two years of age, with the prospect of securing from each hog at least 300 pounds of pork, while other farmers think it more profita- ble to have their sows farrow in the spring, killing tho pigs when they are about ten months old, when they are ex- pected to weigh 150 pounds each, Both methods have their advantages. Whether it is more profita- ble to raise two pigs that weigh only as much as one that is larger depends, there- fore, upon the management, and the question is still dobatable. The different breeds, however, demand different treatment. Such plgs as the small Yorkshires and Suffolks, which mature very early, fatten readily, and in feeding them before penning them for being finally fatted the food should be of a character to promote growth rather than fat. One of the difticulties with these two breeds is that they begin to fatten at a very early age, and the carcass, when dressed, does not abound in as large pro- poriion of lean meat as that of mome of of the larger breeds. The food, there- fore, should consist of that which not only promotes growth of bone, but which is also of a dietary character. Large bone is not one of the good qualities of & hog, as it denotes offal; but to promote growth in the earlior stages is to build up the frame upon which the flesh may be placed afterward; and, as a rapid growth of the frame necessarily implies the quicker for- mation of musclo, the largest proportion of carcass may bo secured when the pro- per time for feeding corn arrives. If the vigslare very fat when young thoy do not grow as rapidly as they should, and as some farmers prefer to kill them at a period when the fat and lean is well pro- portioned, the ‘‘hardening process,” which is the final method, usually re. sults in an excees of fat. The large breeds, on_the contrary, do not ceaso growing until after entering on the sec. ond ycar, when they to, took on fat very quickly. Some broeds, such as the improved Chosters, Kssexs, Cheshires, Poland Chinas and large Yorkshires, are preferred for their long bodies, excelling in the production of sidemeat, while the Berkshires are the producers of the best bams. In feeding the large broeds, yot it 18 best to have them well fatted at the time of penning them in order to avoid feeding a large lot of corn. The small breeds fatton quicker when ponned than the large breeds because growth has ceased. | YOUNG MEN, Tig Vouraie Beur Coxpany, of Marshall, Michigan, offer to send their celabrated Lo h0-VOLTAIC BEL PLIANCES on trial for thirty days, to men R MILL ol 1:H ODELL ROLL ‘TIIW ¥3TI08 TIAQ0 estimates, and will contract for 1 Filevators, or for changing stem, ‘We are prepared to furnish plans ar ths erection of Flouring Mills and G Flouring Mills, from Stona to the Kol 1 pos*, and estimajes made for some General wmachiner y repairs attended prouiptly, Aadress RICHARD & CLARKE, Omaha,Neb (young or old) afflicted with acrvous debility, loss of vitality and manhooa, aud all kindrad troubles, Also for rheumatism, neuralain, paralysis, aud many other dis Complet restors 1 o health, vigor and manhood guar. anteed, No risle incurred, as thirty duys’ trial is allowed.
