Box, 488 Omaha, Neb, 0110 is just now acting in the capacity of a contribution box for both political parties. Berrorn, the red-headed rooster of the Rockies, was not renominated for congress by the republicans of Colorado. His triends sny ho made no effort to se cure the renomination, as he is in poor health and wants a rest. His Rocky mountain oratory and sparkling wit will be missed in the house, T campaign in - Wisconsin promises to be fully as interesting as that in Ohio. Chairman Barnum, of the democratic na- tional committee, proposes after the Oc- tober election in Ohio, fo invade the Badger state with an army of two hun- dred speakers, and the Milwaukee brew- ers are to flood the commonwealth with oceans of beer. Barnum doesn’t say how many mules he will require. When the votes are counted on November 4th Mr. Barnum will find that his eflorts have been in vain, ed Irishman Wik such a disting as Congressman John F. Finerty, from tho Irish-Amorican district of Chicago, emphatically declares his intention of voting for Blaine, and asserts that the election of Cleveland would be a mis- fortune and a curse, it means something. It shows that the thinking men among tho Irish are alive to the importance of keeping Mr. Cleveland at home, and their declarations will have great weight among the Irish all over the country. It cannot be denied that the Irish do- fection from the ranks of the democracy is assuming mammoth proportions, and this is espacially the case in Now York. Tue democrats, of course, are attempt- ing to make capital out of the fact that the prohibitory amendment was carried in Maine by an overwhelming majority, and this result is charged up to the re- publicans, The New York Star, a lead- ing democratic paper, however, hits the nail squarely on the head, when it says: Let usbe fair. The republican gove- nor of Maine is elected by a majority of about 21,000, The prohibitory amend- ment s carried in Maino by a majority of 45,000. Obviously the unavoidable in- feronco is that amojority of tho Maine democrats either voted for the sumptu- ary amendment, or, like Blaine, did not vou upon the issue at all. Tur English government is trying a novel experiment in life insurance. Pol- icies for sums mnot over $126 are now granted at any post office savings bank without any medical examination. 1F, however, an insured should die before the second annual premium besomes payable, the amount of the, first premium, and no more, will be paid to his represen- tative; should the insured die after the \payment of the second, but before the third premium becomes due, the repre- sentatives will be paid only half the amount of tho policy. In caso of death from accident, howeyer, the full amount is paid, After the payment ot the third premium the policy 1s entitled to full benefit, Tue great issue in Maine was, shall the Plumed Knight be endorsed?! The pine- tree state answered in no uncertain tone, At Mr, Blaine's own home the republican majority was the largest ever cast. In the three towns—Augusta, ' Hollowell and Gardiner-within six miles of his home, the republican majority was 1,350, a gein of 5560, In his own county the re- publican gain is 1,500 over two years ago. “This is the testimony,” says the Chicago Zribune, **of the people who have known him thirty years. This is the answer to the statement 8o industriously made be- fore the election that when the time came the voters of Maine would rise and rebukehim. * * * Twenty thousand #ix hundred and fifteen 1s the style in which Mainegives the lie to Mr. Blaine's defamers,” Tur littlo city of New Branswick, New Jersey, isa bankrupt corporation, 1t owes debts to the amount of §1,800,- 000, while its valuation is only §5,000,- 000. It is in fact mortgaged for nesrly two-fifths of its value. The tax rate last year was §3.80 on the $100, and this revenue was insuflicient to pay the inter- est on the debt, This distressing condi- tion of the city is due to bank officials and office holders, Ten yearsago the principal bank was robbed of §1,250,000, by the cashier, Several of the city and county officials have from time to time committed wholesale robberies, and some of them have been sent to the peniten- tary. The recent bank robbery has again plunged the city into financial distress and about the best thing the New Bruus- west, 1 Binfls OMen,' No 7 Pearl St | TIE STATE UNIVERSITY. The Nebraska state university begins onth year undor the faculty has been rei d is now stronger than during any | tha history of the ina vious sions is that of Dr. Lowis E. Hicks, fills the chair of geol e is a pupil of Agassiz, and has an expericnce of fif teon yoars as a teacher. Dr. Hicks i | man of more than ordinary abilily and attainments, and the university is t> be congratulated upon having secured his services. In the election of Prof, ( Bessey to the chair of botany and horti- culture, the regents of the university have acquired an instructor who willadd to the reputation of tho university. He comes from the lowa agricultural college, of which he was vice-president. Prof. Dos- ay is also vice-president of tho American association for the advance. ment of science, in charge of the section of biology. Ile has written several val- uable text books on botany, which are in use in scme of the best colleges of the country. Inaddition to his other duties, Professor Bessey has been made the dean of the industrial college of our university, Professor Nicholson, who is returning from Europe, will soon resume his position, TIn the college of medicine Drs, Mercer and Livingston have been appointed to the two chairs of surgery. The Latin echool rotaing most of the old instructors , and is reinferced by Charles . Bennet!, B. A., of Brown university, who becomes classical instructor, and T. M. Hodgman, B, A., of Rochester uni- versity, who is assigned to matnematics. Other instructors have been added to the various departments, and the pros- pects of the Nebraska state university are mow of the most encouraging character. This institution should bo and can bo made to rank with antry. Our the best colleges in the state people should encourase it by send- ing their sons and daughters there, es pecially when it is an admitted fact that they can recoive as good an education in the state university as they can inany other westorn college. Tug next battle of the campaign will ocear in Obio, and all eyes are now turned towards that state. Desperate made by tho efforts are b democrats, iy hopes of success owing to the d that has been caused by the liquor laws. A great deal of money will bo spent by the democrats, who will draw largely for funds on the brewers, distillers, and liquor dealers. A host of speakers have been engaged to stump the state, and nothing will be left undono to make votes. Whilo thero may bon certain number of republicans who will vote the have great flection democratic state ticket in October with a view of thus obtaining redress for what they claim are local griovances, their party loyalty is s0 strong that they will vote the republican ticket on the national olection day. It is barely possible that Ohio might go democratic in October, and thie of courso would have a depres ing effoct on the November olection. But Ohio has never gone democratic in a presidential year since the rebellion. Tho nearest that it camo to it was in 1876 when Hayes received a plurality of only 7,616, In 1880 Garfieldhad plural- ity of 34,227, 1t is conceded, however, that the election both in October and Novem- ber will be very close. The Ohio repub- licans have beer. greatly encouraged by the result in Maine, and the Plumed Kuight will himself visit Ohio within the next two weeks, and will probably re- main there and make speeches until the October election day. The presence of Blaine on the battle-field will undoubted- ly have a telling effect. The republican managers are massing their forces all along the line and are doing very effec- tive work. Under tho circumstances the republicans everywhere have reason to believe that Ohio will prove herself loyal to the party. Ix shutting up the fruit-stands upon tho sidowalks and streot-corners, the city marshal has pursued a very arbitrary and cruel course. These fruit-venders occupy but four feet of the sidewalk, the same spaco which is permitted to every mer- chant in front of his store, and they either pay rent for this space or have the per- wmission of the property owner to occupy it. Now, In such cases, what right has the city marshal to close them up? He has simply done this, as we understand it, at the request of those fruit-dealers who rent buildings, and who want to shut out the sidewalk dealers, Yet the marshal allows dealers who reut or own buildings, to oceupy four feot of the sidewalk for the display of their goods. This is cor- tamly an unjust discrimination which works a hardship upon a few poor per- sons who are endeavoring to earn an honest livin We uever saw a city of any pretensions that did not allow fruit stands upon the sidewalks. In Chicago they are found upon nearly every corner, and no complaint is made against them by any one. We question whother the marshal can legally shut up a fruit stand which occupies only four fect of the side- walk, and for which space rent is paid to the property-owner or lessee, T police forco of Omaha certaioly are among the members men who are ut- CAPAC pee that the council, having become con- aspectat men.
