The convention then adjourned, ot e 25 ject for study, The Sabbath Day., JRAESET S, Skin-Grafting, Dr. R. F. Campbell, of Cleveland, ha explained to the Herald, of that city how ho saved the life of Mr. Frawloy, - brakeman on the Lake Shore and Mich igan Southern road. Frawley was burned so badly by the explosion of an oil car at Angola, New York, last March, that the skin of his back, of both legs and of both thighs was destroyed to the extent of 800 equare inches. The afliicted surfaco was 8o large, cspecially on the left limb, that if allowed to heal without skin-grafting the muscles would contract and cripple the patient for life in all probability. Before performing the operation of grafting new skin the surgeon carofully prepared the wounds by cutting out all the burned parts and dead skin. Thirty days from the time of the accident the wounds were healed sufliciently to allow the application of bits of skin ranging in size has been burned away, but one is just as good as the other for all practical pur- poses. The surgeon found the under part of a good healthy corn would pro- duce skin growth of a normal characters Dr. Campbell eaid skin-grafting was first practiced in this country in 1871, and it is more common than ever now. Some surgeons press the bits under the granules, but equal results will be ob- tained, in his_experience, by morely laying the bits between the granules on the surface, Bits of skin from a col- ored person when grafted retain their natural color. So successful was Dr. Campbell with Frawley that the railroad company engaged him to operate on Charles Anderson, of Angola, who re cently had his back burned by a rail- road accident, A Terrible Shock, Chicago Herald, “I saw scmething new up in Wiascon- sin the other evening,” observed a Chicagoan who had a eachel in his hand and who was on his way home. “A patent medicine man was selling some- thing or other from a carriage in which he had a rather pretty young woman and a gasoline lamp. Tho ~lady sang ono or two songs very sweetly and then the msu talked and sold his nostrum at a dollar a bottle. ““When he had disposed of thirty or forty bottles he said: ‘Now, gentlemen, before bidding you good-night I will give you an exhibition of the wonderful magnetic powers of my wife, who sits here by my side. 1 hold in my hand a common piece of thread. Now one of you take hold of the end of itand walk off and then let all the others take hold of it and at the gignal which I will give she will take hold of the other end and you will feol the shock instantly. “‘About 150 men and_boys grasped the thread and walked off abont half a block with it. ‘Now keep perfertly quiet,’ said the man, ‘and you will feel the shock, delicate at first and then strong enough to tinglo at the ends of your fin. gers and toes. Aro you all ready” “They all said ‘Yes.’ *Well, then, I will put out tho light,” said he, ‘aud my wife will take the thread in her hand at that instant.’ “The light went out and the man’s voice was heard: ‘What have you In your hand, my dear?’ “The longest string of suckers T ever saw id all my life,’ come in a sweet, mus ical voice, and at the same moment the horses and carriage were driven afl at groat speed, leaving the crowd holding onto the string completely dumbfounded. “Tt was the worst shock a good many of those fellows ever got.” rain & Provisions, BOOGE'S SIOUX CITY HAMS, J.
