The convention rather woke up under Shea. Hon, W, Patton was then called out. He denounced the protective tariff as beiug against the interests of the wage workers. He believed in reform, He was agaiust corruption of the ballot. He believed in license. Col. C. R. Scott, of the republican camp, was called out with wmuch applause and laughter. He said he didu't kunow what the wmatter was, He thought that this was a democratic convention to choose delegates, not to hear republican speeches. Mr. Babcock—*You have opposed re publican candidates so often that we thought you was enough of a democrat to talk here,” Qol. A Wife Months Attor Hor Husband's Death, Secures a Divorce A fow days ago a gentleman from Ohio arrived in this city and putup at Kiel's hotel. He acon began making inquiries for one George Ray, whom he had heard was somewhero in this part of the coun- try. ““Yew, he in hero,” at lnst replied one of those of whom he inquired. “The poor fellow was hore, but you will have to dig to find him, He is put under tho ground.” Suro enough the poor follow was horo and yot had gone. Many hero atill romembor Georgn Ray, not because of his prominence in soclety, or in poli- tios, or in business, but bocauso he was & kind-henrted, friend-making sort of a follow, and bocauso his doth was a wnd and attratced much attention and excited much comment. Tho death took place about & yoar ago in arickety old building, next to the old Bryant house on Broadway. Hero ho one, had lingered along iu poverty and sick- ness for sovoral weeks, attended by a woman who clung to him with a groat- or tonncity and faithfulness than many who are honored by the ne of wife Of the poor fellow’s previous history little was known, except that he had beon a musician in the regular army. While here he did some barbering, some tend- ing of bar, and in fact whatever his hands found to do, until diseased and die- couraged, ho laid him down to die. He was put at rest in the cemotery, and his grave has beon about forgotten save by the woman who had porformed the wife- ly duties, and who soon after his death bocame a mother. She has visited his grave froquontly, taking to it little floral tributes, showing that whatever her faults, sho had ono tender spot in her heart. The stranger from Ohio who had learn- od thoese facts concerning poor (ieorge, was not a little surprised. He, too, had a fow pagos from Georee’s history, It appoars that he had lived in Ohio and there married, but despite a happy home, wife and children, his footstops got into the down path, and wine, women and the gaming tablo soon brought him into porplexing troubles. In his desperation ho raised what woney he could by dis- posing of his property, and even wont so far as to forge his wite's uncle’s name to a note, which he sold, and then dlsap- poared, deserting wife, children and frionds. After a time it was learned that he had gone far west, and later that he had enlisted tn the regular army as & musician, He was stationed at Omaha for a time, and then was transforred to some of the frontier posts. There he de serted, and wandering eastward came to this city and here tinished his course. The Ohio wife not hearing anything from him after his desertion, waited and watched until hisreturn seemed no longer to be hoped for. Last spring she secured a divorce from him in the courts here, ot knowing that the poor fellow was dead and buried almost a year before. The custody of the children was given her, and yet, though legally separated from the wan, she desired, if possible, to learn something about him, and so this gentleman, a relative of hers, being on his way west, stopped here to make in- (quiries.
