G. Wilson, of this place. The funeral was to take place yesterday. It seems pretty well settled that Mr. Jacob Sims, of this city, will not only be supported by his own county for the nomination of circuit judge, hut that he will have a strong support from other counties in the district, T. D. King & Co., having got moved into their new quarters just east of the revere house, have placed in front of their cigar factory and retail store an el- egant large femalo figure, one of the best streot signs of the kind in the city. The announcement by some of the pa- pers that Dick Picketts was to open the Windsor house seems to have been a cruel hoax, perpetrated just to have the genial Dick beset by a crowd of furniture men, grocers, etc., determined to soll him goods. Rev. Dr. Thompson, president of the Methodist college at York, Nobraska, preached an excellent sermon in the Broadway Methodist church yosterday morning, At the close of the sermon he spoke briefly of the work being dono at the Institution of which he is the head, What appears to bo a dark crime was inquired into by Justice AbbottSaturday, Ida Bell claimed that Emelino Taylor, another swarthy maiden here, threatened to cut Ida’s heart {out. The Judgo de- cided Ida’s heart was not in danger, and dismissed the caso, The high school building on the hill has boen undergoing some repairs, and has been put in excellent condition for the opening of school, one weok from to- day. The heating apparatus has been thoroughly overhauled, and Saturday was satisfactorily tested, An attempt was made Saturday to get Thomas Morgan, better known as Tom, Pomnergrass, released on a writ of habe- as corpus, beforo Judge Lyman. It failed, however, and J, J. Franey, the fellow's attorney, is left diaconsolate, his client being still in jail, The democratic county convention meets at the court house to-morrow af- ternoon to select thirteen delegates to the state convention at Davenport, Sep- tember 3, and a like number to attend the congressional convention at Atlantic September 10, and a like number to the | T4 judicial convention that meets here Sep- tember 17, The vacancy in the circuit bench oc- casioned by the necessary withdrawal of Judge Lyman to accept the congressional nomination, has & number of applicants already who are eager to have their claims recognized. Of Pottawattamio’s aspirants we know of none on whom the honor would fall 'with more becoming grace than that worthy young republican, Jacob Sims, ot Council Blufls,—Oakland Acorn, F{A little Bunday rumpns is reported as BEE., | terday afternoon, in which Jack Shields and a colored man named Green partici- pated, the latter getting the best of Shields. No arrests, Of course not. Lacy's place is too sacred a city head- quarters to permit of atrests there, and then of course, no one would believe that any row took place there on Sunday, when all saloons are supposed to be closed up. The dear old grandmother gave another scowl at Officers Hurley and Bates yes- terday. The old lady will never forgive them for arresting two of her children the other night for getting into a quarrel over Butler's letter of acceptance. If the old lady had really wanted to be- friend the poor fellow who was arrested by Hrley on the suspicion of hin being a horse thief, why did she not turn over the lawyer who got the fellow clear! There was no evidence against him, and he would have been discharged anyway, but still a lawyer Is said to have charged him €50 for looking after his case, and now the poor fellow, with his three blind horses, has got to let one or more of them go to square the attorney's bill, THE OFFIOIAL LETTERS, Judge Lyman Oficially Notified of His Nomination.—He Accepts and Withdraws From the Judicial Ticket, Hon, J. Lyman, Council Bluffs, Iowa, —My Dear Sir: As chairman of the con- gressional committeo it is my duty and pleasure to notify you that on the 13th inst. the republican congressional con- vention for the ninth congressional dis- taict of Towa, held at Atlantic, nominat- ed youas the republican candidate for congress. This nomination being unex- pected and unsought by you, was a_high mark of the confidence and esteem in which you are held by the party consti- tuting that conventlon. It 1s also a great pleasure to your many friends that your nomination was unantmous and that this action of the convention is heart- ily endorsed throughout the district, You having been heretofore nominated for the office of circuit judge there has boen an anxious inquiry in all the coun- ties in this district as to whether you would accept this nomination for congrees thus unanimously tendered you. Allow me, my dear sir, to express the hope that you will, at an early day, set at rest this question in the minds of your many frionds throughout the district by accept- ing your nomination as the republican candidate for congress. 1 am, sir, very respectfully yours, WiLtiam F, Sarr, Chairman Congressional Committee, Council Bluffs; Towa, Aug. 22, 1887- JUDGE LYM PTANCE. Ho~. W. F. Sarr, Chairman Congres- slonal Committee, Ninth Dlstrict, Coux oin Brurrs, lowa—Dear Sir; Your let- ter of the 22d inst. Is received, formally announcing my nomination as the candi- date of the republican party, for repre- sentative in congross from this district, by the republican congressional assem- bled at Atlantic on the 13th inst. That nomination was a complete surprise, be- ing wholly unexpected and unsolicited. I have not words at my command to ade- quately oxpross mygratitudo for that token of the contidence of the people of this dis- trict in me, and especlally for the una- nimity with which it was tendered. It has been a matter of no little perplexity w detormine in what direction duty leads, under the circumstances. A few woeks since I was placed In nomination by the ropublican judicial convention of the Thirteenth judicial district for the oflice of circult judge. This is a position within the line of my chosea profession, and congenial to my ~ tastes, and one too for which my lifo training has, perhaps, given me some degroe of fitness, and in ac- copting the congressional nomination the other must of course bo given up. After giving the subject careful conside- ratlon, and after full consultation with those interested in, and having in charge of both the congressional and judicial tickets and contests, 1 have determined to acsopt the honor conferred at Atlantic and will stand as the republican candidate for congress from this district, For nearly thicty years I havo beon a resident of the torritory now constitut- ing the Ninth congressional distiict, and it is unnecessaiy at this time, even if itiwere approprinto, to entor upon an ex- tended statoment or discussion of politi- cal principles. Those who have known me during all the years of wy rosidenco in Towa know that I have boon a repub. lican. The principles and policy of ~ the republican party have been mine from boyhood. 1 endorse and stand upon the platform of that party adopted at the recont republican national convention held at Chicago. 1 believe that platform to embody the true principles which will secure the stability and prosperity of our government, 1f elected to ropresent the people or this district on the floor of congress, I shall vote for and use my best efforts to for- ward such logislation as will carry out thoso principles, as also such legislation as will, in my judgment, secure the rela- tive rights of all classes and conditions of the people, and militate most strongly in favor of tho genoral properity and well boing of the nation. = And particularly shall T endeavor to advance and secure tho enactment of all proper laws and other measures which will be advantage ous to this district, Again, through you, T thank the ro- publicans of this district for the high honor they have conferred upon me, and tha trust they have reposed in me, I accopt the nomination, and pledge my- solf, if the action of the convention shall be ratified at the polls, to devote my en- tire enorgies and abilities to the faithful discharge of that trust, Respectfully, yours, J. Lyman, Council Bluffs, lowa, Aug, 23, 1884, JUDGE LYMAN WITHDEAWS HIS NAME FROM THE JUDICIAL TICKET, '8 ACC =OnarLes M, Piany, Esq,® Chairman Judicial Committee, Thirteenth Distriot, Councit Buorrs, Towa,—Dear Sir: On June 26 last, the republican convention of the Thirteenth judicial district honor. ed mo with & unanimous nomination for circuit judge. Sinco then as you aro aware, the republican conven- tion of the Ninth con. gressional district have placed me in nomination for representative in con- gress, These two nominations have placed mo in & possition of considerable perplexity. However after caroful con- sideration of the situation and full and having taken place in Lacy's saloon yen-l free consultation with those interested in, and having in charge both the judicl- alund congressienal tickets and cam- peigns, I have determined it to be better to accept the latter nomination, I therefore place at disposal of the your 1 committee, or of a convention to be by you called, the place now held by me on the judicial ticket of this district. Through you I desire to heartily thank the republicans of the district for the honor conferred upon me, feeling and know however, that the ticket will suffer no detriment from my withdrawal, and that the vacancy thus created will be more than ably filled by some one of the many able jurists of the district. Respectfully Yours, J, Lysas, Council Bluffs. August 23, 1884, e All forms of blood diseases cured at Siloam Springs, Kidney and liver dis- eases speodily relieved and cured. Ad dress RRev. M. M. Thompson, manager, Albany, Mo, ‘emtf e THE CITY BONDS. No More Startling Ievelations and the Public Nerves a Little More Quiet, The exciting talk about the city bonds hes quieted down a little. One of the causes of the tranquility is the receipt of a telegram stating that the ccoh for the bonds thus far sold has been placed to the credit of the city in the Park bank of New York., The mejority of the council scem un- willing to allow the bonds to go at nine- ty-five cents on the dollar, unless the property owners themselves join in a po- tition to that effcct. The declaration is made by some of the officials that if the bonds cannot be sola at once, the work shall proceed and the property own- ers be compolld to pay cash down, the contract providing that this can be done. This 18 given out as a sort of threat, but what effect it will have re- mains to be seen. | Mayor Vaughan, when lost heard from was in Boston, but as hehas been notified of the wishes of the majorityof the coun- cil, he will probably hasten his steps homeward now, and the farce will soon come to an end. e T Feeblo ladies grown strong and happy at Siloam Springs, Albany, Gentry county, Mo. emtf SCARCITY OF BIDDERS. ‘Why The OCity Cannot Get Men To Do Its Street Work, The city has of late been doing its best to get contractors to bid on doing certain street filling, such as that which 1s now 80 much needed on Sixth avenue. No bids came in in response to the advertise- ment. This may be a matter of surprise to some, but to those knowing certaln facts it can surely bo no surprise. One instance is sufficient: T. A, Denton, who did the filling of Eighth street, from Third avenue, and whose contract was at |7 the low price of 22 cents a cubio yard, completed his work in April, and still the city council refuses or neglects to givo him certificates of assessment. No claim is made that he is not entitled to the certificate, and promises have been mado himjthat he shall have them. If this is the way men are to be fused, and it seoms to be the way, it is no wonder that othors knowing theso facts will not do worls for tho city, and the stroots are allowed to remain in a tertible condition, There are plenty of men who stand ready to bid on work 80 soon as they will bo treated justly by the city. — The proprietor of Siloam Springs will enter into a written contract to cure your catarrh or forfeit all claim to pay’ for treatment, Write Rev. M. M. Thomp- son, Albany, Gentry county, Mo, emtf At linerod s That Five Per Qent, Tho anxiety displayed by a fow of tho city ofticials to have the paving bonds s0ld at 95 cents on the dollar, cannot but arouse suspicion. A premium of five per cont for placing the bonds amounts to sevoral thousand dollars, & nice little sum for somoebody. it has been urged that by selling tbe honds and getting the cash to pay the contractors, the latter will have to discount five per cent., so that would offset the five per cent. dis- count on the bonds, This looks very plausible, but the fact romains, as none know better than tho city oflicials themselyes, that the con- tractorsarenotobliged to discount five per cent unless the cash isforthcoming as fast as the work is completed and accepted. The paving of Main street has been cor ploted and accopted, and the day to claim the five per cent discount is past and gono forever. The only show to got the discount from the contractors is for the work yet t> bo done, Tho public has stood pretty quitetly star chamber meot- ings, and other sly work, but it is useloss to try to mislead any longer. The facts ought to be stated as they are, — Hundreds of grateful people who have been cured of rheumatism, say that Silo- m Springs.
