Then there was a clapping of hands and applauge on the part of the lobt The question of the resolution drawn by Judge Dillon was discussed sc Ald. James and Ald. Siedentopf objected to voting for the resolution so long ae the bonds were not in the direct custody of the city treasurer. The resolution was adopted, these two voting against it Ald. Mynster preeented a bill of Col- lins & Ryan for $750 for work on Vaughan avenue, Ald. Siedentopf objected until the city ongineer mado an estimate. About £100 had been already drawn and no re- port made by the engineer. Ald. James objected to a work of £2,000 or more going on without the cotmeil knowlng about the contracts or anythiong of the sort. A Ald, Mynster explained that a special committes was appointed to do this work. The records showed it. The committee was doing it. Alderman James said he did not sup- pose the committee was going ahead with $2,000 or $3,000 worth of work, without any contract or plans being presented to the city council. The city was not in condition to go ahead with such improve- ments. The bill was finally allowed, Alderman Seidentopf voting no, and Alderman James not voting. Alderman Siedentopf filed a written objection to City Treasurer Clausen hav- ing allowed the city bonds to go out of his possession. So, according to Bishop Burnett, his biographer, when he heard the man's name he asked if he were not the same person that had sent him the venison; and finding he was the same, he told him he could not suffer the trial to go on till he had paid him for his buck, to which the gentleman answered that he never sold his venison; that he had done nothing to him that he did not do to every judge that had gone tho circuit, which was confirmed by several gentle- men then present. But all would not do, for the lord chief baron had learned from Solomon ‘‘that a gift perverteth the way of judgment,” and therefore he would not sufter the trial to o on till he hadpaid for tho prescnt, upon which the gentleman withdrew the record. This noble sentiment of the great Eng- lish jurist was fully indorsed by the last ropublican convention, when it declared that thereafter no office-holder should be allowed to accept presents from railroads, thus branding the practice as corrupting v8 Omaha, [ J MANDEMAKERS & VA . Has the legislature entirely in its [control passed any law to forbid the accepting of presents, and thus carry out one of the declarations of the party in power! Do not all the judges, from the Supreme bench down to the district courts, all the sheriffs who impanel jur- ies, all county oflicers, and thousands of influential men of the state habitually accopt these scandalous bribes from the railroads! Scme years since, the writer understood that there was one judge of the Supremo court, Judge Beck, who believed with Solomon that “‘a present provertoth judgment.” If there are any ~ne of our judges who now decline ac cepting those bribas, will you publish who they are, for it will bo a pleasure for mo to vote for such and noother, Every euitor in our courts, whether plaintiil ar defendant in a railroad case, and the attorneys employed, are perfect- ly satisfied that the court only gives him partial justico. 1 presume that if any privatecitizen havog a case in court should send o presont of $100 to oeach of the supreme judges, ho would be prosecuted for an attempt at bribory, or imprisoned for contempt. But who ever heard of any of our judges, except Judge Bock, declining to accept a pass from a railroad, which is fully as shameful as to accept money, Perhaps the [democratic parjy would be ag subservient to the railroad power as the ropublican party is, should it carry the state at the next election, It has not, however, violated its promise to the people in this respect, as it has made none and wil' not prejudge them Tho only course to be purscd by republi cans who feel sore over the course cf their party,is to absolutely refuse to vote or any of its candidates who have hith- érto nccopted bribes in violation of one of the most important planks in the party platform, Such candidates should be de- feated at all hazard even though the democrats should be elected, for the latter have violated no pledges. Every honest republican who feels the degradation of his party in the state in regard to the power the railroads hold in it, should unite and vote these bribe-takers down and lot the party managers know that they must respect the party platform, I therefore call upon the grangers, the mechanics, the laboring men of the state, who furnish the money for the bribe givers and takers to come out and show theirflove of justice and their love of the yroat republican party, by voting againat every candidate who has accopted bribes, and thus purify itself from the control of COMMEROIAL, OOUNCIL BLUFFS MARKET, Commission Merchant No .89 Pearl Street - Council Bluffs owa.
