See J. Reiter's summer goods, Sewerage work was suspended yestar- day on account of tho wet weather. The Colored Blaine and Logan club will meet at the court house to-night. The circuit court vpened yesterday. As on most opening days little of public interest was done. Mrs, C. Anderson, whose husband is a shoemaker, was yesterday granted a di- vorce, on the grounds of drunkenness and cruelty. All persons should attend the literary and social gathering of the Y. M. C. A, this evening at 8:30 o'clock, and the sociable on Friday evening at the same place. J. C. Mitchell, the agent of the Wa- bash, says the Wabash has shortened i~ time between here and Chicago five and ahalf hours. Quite a change for the better. An information was filed yesterday ta- fore Justice Schurz, charging ¥. E. Scar- borough with trespass, in having entercd Jacob Weber’s house and taking posses- sion of it. Charles D. Harman, who has been with David Bradley & Co., has been se- lected to look after the intcrest of the Hoosier Drill compuny, in place of O. D. Reeves, who now goes into the manufac- ture of roller skates. One of Councll Bluffs’ citizens felt more reconciled to Council Bluf's mud on re- turning from Omaha, where he saw a a horse buried so deep on Twentieth street that only his head and the top of the saddle were above ground. A telegram was received yesterday from New York stating that Ald. Myn- ster and City Treesurer Clausen had stated for home, and that no bonds had been sold. The advice was also tele- graphed to go ahead with the sewerage and probably some bonds would be sold next weck. The name of A. T. Flickinger has been mentioned by some as among the possi- ble successors to Judge Lyman as nomi- nee for the circuit bench, Mr. Flicken- ger would not make a bad cholice, but this time he is said to have no thought or desire in that direction, but is working enthusitsically for his friend Jacob Sims’, nomination, A meeting of the bar of Pottawatts. wie county was held yesterday at which appropriate action was taken conceraing the death of Marshal Key. Col. Sapp was called to the chair and made appro- priate remarks in eulogy of the deceased. John H. Keatley was chosen secretary. On motion of Mr. Tipton the following comniittee was chosen to prepare resolu- tions; John H. Keatley, B. W. Hight, W. H., Ware, John N, Baldwin and Robert Percival, In making up the congressional com- mittee at the convention at Atlantic, Pottowattamie county was left blank, it being desired that time be given to con- sult tho wishes of the candidate, and others. It has been decided to make Col. W. F. Sapp, the member from this county, and he will doubtless be made the chairman of the committee, a most excellent choice. The campaign will be wisely carried on under such able and ex- perienced leadership. | — Progeamme of the Sociable To-night, 1. Music, 2, Reading—Miss Annie Mayes. 3. How Three Men Tried to Sell a Gov- ernment Bond, One of the prominent capitalists of the city while sitting in his offict the other day had his attention attract>d and curiosity excited by the entrance of three men who seemed very much in earnest about somuthing, and evidently felt the jmportance of their mission. One of them, who served as spokesman for the trio, was a little fellow full of energy and self-assurance. He presented his ce-ds with a flourish, and went on to give an autobiographical sketch of the wonderful success of his life, and especially in politics, he having risen to the high posi- tion of supervisor in the country town- ship where he lived, He Introduced s friends and paid a tribute to their worth and high standing. He represented in glowing colors the growth of his little village, and what bright prospects it had. It was to be the railway center of that whole gection of country. The capitaliet in vain tried to make out what the fellow wes after, end was sti'l undecidcd as to whether the glib talker was a patent- rights man or a real estate der'er, when he was enlightened by the remark : “Now, slr, we have call'a on you to soll a $1,000 government bond!” “You want to sell a bond, eh? Why how far do you live from the city?” “Oh, perhaps fifteen hundred” milos, ’ “And you have come all the way here to sell this bond?” : “Yes. we know the bond is good and we thuught we could find some one here to buy it. s “But why didn't you stop in some nearer clty, instead of coming 1500 miles or why didn’t you sell _the government bond at one of your own vanks! Have not you got any banks in your place, cranywhere nearer than 1,500 miles from your home!” g “Oh, yes, bnt let us explain sir. We have some good banks and some good brokers in our town and near by, but yov know they are old-fogy sort of folks, and then they are sort of prejudiced against me because I have been 8o suc- cessful in politics, and they won't touch this bond. One of the bankers wanted to find me a customer tor nothing, but I was afraid it was a scheme to nake a lit- tle off of it on the sly. So we put $600 in our valise and thought we would travel and find a customer ourselves., We wanted to see Council Blutfs, anyway, and r1 the bond belonged t5 an est.te, the ¢ Iministrator of which gave us the $600 to py ex- ponser, wo thought we might ¢ well adopt this method.” “But th's sec..s 8oii of stiange, gen- tlomen. I have o sions'ly bought gov- eiament bonds, but only from persors whom 1 knew, not from ~ ati. 1gers, who have come hundredso” mi'es t) sell r~ one. Itst k-+ me Yeremust be som> th'ng w.ong about t! %, 1 inust inquire into a little."” “Oh, +he bond is genume, I sssure you,” eanestly rephed the Vittlo man. “It's a good bond. You know Unc's Sam’s bonds ave zood and ata pr nium. bat we t=e willing to sell you th's one at par. That mak- - it seem still more svspic- ious. If youdo not want t) sell it a Je-a than what it i= rc* 'ly worth, why 1 should thirk you «ould” find pleniy of cus* ymers without coming 16€0 ol *‘We'l, we I'vve lesters right here in our pockets, and where the vots of con- gross, which warrant the issueuce of such onds, and the cer ifi t2 of the tree-uly department that it is al! right, and pler- ty of o*her documents for you to look over and satisfy yourself.” I do not doubt but what you say is true. The bond i3 doubtless a good onoe, and yet it soems to me so strange that the administrator of the estate, to which you say the bond belongs, should send three of you fifteen hundred miles, at a cost of $600 to sell this bond, and load you down with document and congress ional reports—all this seems so strange that T ¢ nnot but feel a Jittle skittish about buying it. Excuse mo for saying 80, but my suspicions are excited and 1 guess 1 won't buy it, for I can buy all 1 want of persons whom I know to be re- sponsible.” The little man looked crestfallen, and his two comrades, who had been standing by in silence, munching some peanuts purchased at one of the metropoli street stands, scomed disappointed. The little man rallied and said “So it seems a government bond can- not be sold in this market, even at par! That is strange.” 4“Oh, sir, government bonds are sold and bought hero at the same premium as olsewhere. It isn’t that, but I don’t like the way this one is offered for sale. That is all. I prefer not to run the risk.” “You consider it a risk then to buy a government bond/ Why its good es gold.” “I know it is, but T don’t like to buy gold of strangers, who having banks and brokers in their own place, and other cities near by, come 1,504 miles to sell it, and who bring along a lot of documents and mint certificates to prove it is gold, You may be all righi, but thero are so many slick games and wild-cat schemes nowa-days that I prefer to have nothing to do with it Gi2od day, gentlomon,” The trio picked up their hungiy grip- eacks and started out, aud es they regal- ed themselves at an adjacent buttermilk counter, one of the trio remarked —** Well, Council Blutls is the dumbest city T ever saw, Taeidea, that there isn't anybody hero who will bury even a government bond.” *DBat,” said the little spokes man, ‘‘what worries me the most is, that when 1 get back home the administrator of that estate will laugh at me for not be- ing able to sell even a gold piece for nine- ty oconts, 1 never saw such suspi- cious people. But let us go down to rue Bre and other newspaper oflices, and get interviewcd, Then we c<n send marked copies back to cur democratic |7 friends, and we'll get in a puff for the ad ministrator which will make him feel all good natured. Come on, it won't cost much, and we've got to do something, and you know we have #0600 to pay our billa out of anyway.” —— Mesoluth of Howpeot, At a regular meeting of Fidelity council, No. 156, Royal Arcanum, the following resolutions were unanimously adopted: Resolved, That we deplore the loss of our worthy brother, Marshall Key, to whose untiring interest and devotion much of the succees of our order in this city was due, and we desire to place on record our high appreciation of his moral worth snd sterling honesty of character. Quict and retiring in dis- position, he endeared himself to all who knew him by traits of charac ter which exemplified the governing priaciples cf our order—virtue, mercy open to every need, end a disposition to throw the broad mantle of charity over others faults, were ever his distinguish ing traits We shall miss him in our councils, where his wisdom we+ ever exercised for the good of the order, but we shall meet him in the celestinl arc num, where virtue, mercy and charity shall reign in every heart. Resolved, that a copy of these resolu. tions be sent to the afflicted family of our departsd brother, and be published in the daily papers. THE CONFIDENCE CROOKS. Desperate Efforts to Get Them Tarn- ed I oose, The arrest of two confiden e men has inspired the hope that they would bo brought to punishment, and this much of a check given t5 the brsiness which has thrivc 1 o here at the expense of the unwaty. The man who gave his name as John Williams, who tuiaed a little trick on two young men on the incoming Sioux City train, securcd John Jay Frainey o3 his attorney, and pleaded not guilty. All gorts of excuses were given for delay- ing the getting at of the real facts in the case, and the two boys, weavied by the delays, or induced by money considera- tion not to appear, have left the city, so that they will not be on hand to prose- cute. This is the old, old way in which these fellows get out of their (roubles. But in this case it does not look as if this fellow was to get out 80 easily o3 he ex- pected. Tie Bee a fow days ago ex- posed a gang of which one Bloom ap- peared to be a prominent member. From the description gained of Bloom from one of his Main street victims, Mr., Baylies, Tie Bre man became certain on seeing Williams that he was no other than Bloom, and he accordingly got Mr. Bay- liss to go up to the police atation and take a look at Williams, Mr, Dayliss at once identified bim as the fellow Bloom who under the name of Col. Clark, of Kentucky, last May tried to get bim to cash a draft, and failing to do 80 borrowed of him $1.60 and gave a moss ring 1 secarity. A fow days ago the same fellow tried to get Mr. Bayliss’ daughter to c-sh some checks, and Mr. Bayliss entering the store recognized him and the fellow skipped for the depot. Mr. Bayliss is a witness who cannot be run off, scared off or tought off, and hav- ing bus‘iess here can stay by without serious ‘\convenience or sacrifice, and poesibly this fellow may be punished, unless, as they sometimes do, he fur- nishes bail and then jumps the bail. In the other cases the fellow who turned the €10 trick has engezed the d charity. Durity of life, a heart o\'nr‘ W. P. ALYSWORTH. ‘\ = \{" h clrsa A FHOUSE NMOVER. W. After boll ering about in Judge Aylesworth’s couv=t a chango wi - mads yesterday to .Justice Schurzs court, and motions filed and argued, so that it was near night when the tal'no of evidence began. The pros- eculing witness told Tur Bee men that he Fad been urged to le.ve town, and promised that hisloss and expenses would oll be paid, all sorts of inducements of- fered. When this prove of no avail he he wos threatened, but still he stuck. It this is the way these fellows and to be cleared by running off wit- neeses, or frightening them, there will ba & waking up of some fine morning to find that the people have taken the matter in their own hands, This sort of businc -1 hes gone on until the public is tired of it, and if men will attempt to thwart jus- tice by thus tampering with witnesses, they need not be surprised to find the wrath of the people twta on them, as well ag upon the prisoners in whose in- terests such actions are done. THE CUNNING COON. He Secrets His Wealth Where the Officers Miss It, The colored fellow, Charlie Clark, ar- resved here for the $G00 burglaiy at Missouri Valley, piayed it pretty fine on the ofticers, When aicested by Ofticer Hurloy, it ‘was supposed that he must have some of the §600 on his person, bu on being searched only § found, together with the watsh, jeweli, and little effects. The next day, after staying all night in jail, ho was searched more thoroughly. Almos! } or so was overy stitch of clothing was taken off of | / him, his shoes exemined ete., but noth- ing found. 1}t appears that he wes too cunning for all of them. He had a pocketbook in which the bulk of the money wes placed, and that ho slipped down the back of his neck, so that when the oflicer went through his pockets on being arrested, and madea general search it escaped notice. Afterwardsseveral colored fellows called on him at the jail, and were grant- ed admission, and left in their talking to him, He doubtless slipped the stafl into the hands of one of these, and thus got it outside of the jail so that when given the secord search, which wisa close one, he had not the money, The pocket-book he hed slippcd into the water closet and it was yestorday fished out, attention being called to it by the fact that the pipe had got stopped up. There was nothing in the pocket-book, of course, | ——m—— COMMEROIAL, OOUNCIL BLUFFS MARKET, Couscrr, BLures, Towa, August 18,1 Wheat 1 willing, 75@80; No. 8 65@ 70; rejocted 50, Corn—1Local nurposes, 40@ Oats—For loce] purposes, 85(@ 40, Hay—810 00@12 00 per ton; baled, H0@ 60 Rye—40@4be.
