Reiter's summer goods. The circuit court meets to-day. The Pacific house had, Saturday, enough arrivals to fill two and a half pages of the big register. The seven-months-old daughter of Wil liam Richmond, who died on Friday, was buried Saturday at 2 p. m. A number of friends gathered Satur- day evering to witness the opening of a night blooming cercus belonging to Mra, Gilbert Taylor, Rev. Mr. Biasell, of Grrinnell, preached two oxcellent sermons in the Congrega- tional church yesterday. He is off ona vacation, a port of which he has been spending in Nebraska, On September fiest the express busi- ness of the K. C. road will be done by the American Express compary, and the United States express will do the busi- ness of the B, C. R, & N, road. This is simply an exchange between the two companies. The rain Saturday caused a great deal of flooding here and considerable dam- age. A break was made in the dummy track oo that the trains could no go up to Broadway depot. It is time that something was done with the creck be- " LYMAN WILL ACCEPT. Result of a Conference of the Repab- lican Leaders, Facob Sims Apparently Their; Choice for the Judicial Honoi s, At a conference of prominent republi- cans held in this clty Saturday ovening, the uncertainty, which has existed in the public mind at least, as t> whether Major Lyman would accept the congres- sional nomination or not, was finally and fully settled. Tt wa1 a perplexing ques- tion for Major Liyman to decide, ho hav- ng already received at the hands of the party & unanimous nomination for con- tinuance on the circuit bench, and hav- ing tho assurance of an onsy election to that position. To accept the new honors, wed to throw asido this, nescssarlly, and this he did not care to do hastily or ill-advised, Calling about him repre- serftati of the different factions and eletaents of the party, and consulting with them, he was assured that he would have not merely the united party in his support for congross, but would also have such an enthusiastic support, that a vic- acquaintances in Council Bluffs, I mean one of the first with whom I’ became acquainted, and ever since then her face has been one of the restful, hopaful faces of the congre- gation, and her voice one of the pleasant voices, and now they unite as one of the pleasant memories of the Sunday congre- gation, and the prayor-meeting; and the strong family affection that hev bound you all together hrs been a source of great pleasure to me. Such firm family bonds ever remind one of the great family in which we are united in Christ, my first when we learn through Him to tove and obey God as indeed our. Father. Now that He hasj taken the dear companion of so many years, may Ho give you a deeper senso of the enduringness of tho unseen, and the eteinal things, and the precious. ness of those bonds that unite us in ¢>venant and fellowship with our Savior, and with all the redeemed, He only can comfort you. Let not His con- solation seem small to [you. May you through this terrible trial Jearn anew of Christ, and through this experience learn yet more how to comfort those who are in any trouble, My sympathies and prayers aro with you, and shall be with youall. May the everlasting arms be underneath, Affectionately your friend, Cyrus HaMLIN, i Butterick’s Delineator, Young Ladies’ tory in this, natural ropublican district seemed certain, As a result of this con- sultation he has decided to accept the congressional nomination. There re- mained the question as to whether he should lay aslde his present duties, and engage ‘n an active campaign, or not, His friends advised him to continue his judicial duties, deeming that the campaign could be safely trusted to their hands; and this beiag more to his own taste and his own idens of the dignity becoming the judiciary, ho has concluded to continue on the bench until his successor shall take his place. This being thus arranged it therefore becomes necessaly to nominate for the circuit bench some other man. A new judicial convention is to be called at an Jourral, and Popular Monthly just re- coived at Do Haven's. NABBED A NIPPER. The bar, as indicated by the expressions of the most prominent members, scoms not only unanimous, but enthusiastically so, in his favor. Mr. Sims, personally, is a young man of fine culture and thoroughly classical educa- tion, and in his profession has been so close a student and has had so large and varied practice that there is no question of his fitness for the position. Aside from this there are party considerations which are strongly In his favor. During the seven years he has beon in this city ho has worked early and late for the ropublican party, and did offectual sorvice, and has not asked nor been given any reward, position or honors at the hands of of the party. For these, and other reasons, it secems that a number of prominent republicens have decided to push him to the front, aund place him up- on the circuit bench, for in this case, nomination means no loss than _elcetion, W. S. Mayne’s name has also becn named for the position, as it has been bofore. He has many frionds, and just- ly so. Gieorge Carson hes also been named by some as a possible candidate, but so far as loased, bis frionds are not t. ring to push his claims to any extent, Captain Hight, whose name was mentioned when the vacancy occurred by Judge Loni- borow's transfer to the district bench, is understood not to be considered, he having an eye to the position of county clerk, J. P. Conner, the districv attorney, hrs beon barely mentioned as a possible candidate, but his friends say that he would not allow his name to bo us:d, much less would he accept a nomination, eq judiciel hono. . are not along the line of his tastes add ambitions. It is gaid that somo of the friends of H. C. Watkins, of Glenwood, would like 5 have his name considered, but it is too early yot for him to have gathored un any spccinl strength, and there seems to be a feeling that the nomlnation should be left somewhat to this county, the dis- trict judge Weing from the eastern end of the state, OAGED A BURGLAR, Ofticer Hurley Captv=c i Another Prize, Satnrday night Officer J. T. Hurley arrested a coon on the charge of burglar- izing J. H. Ball'shouse at Missouri Val- icy. Ballhad just sold out hia livery stable and had about $600 in his panta loons pocket, and an elegant gold watch and neck chain in his vest pocket. On going to bed Thursday night he threw down his clothes as usual without secret- ing bis wealth, and during the night some one entered the room and got away with the money, watch and chain, The darkey whom Hurley arrestod here gave his name as Charlic Clark, He had been off and on here for sevora) days, and appeared here Friday quito flush, which excited_suspicion nud led to his arrest. Heo had on him the stolen watch, but not the chain, and only £14 of money. He had purchased some new'clothes, a pair of gold sleeve-buttons, a 210 ring, a chain and some ofher arti- oles of lesser value, He claimed that he had bought the watch FKriday at the Northwestern depot, & white man, a stranger to bim, selling it for. §20.
