LU JIIL DA]I \ BEE-COUNCIL ]LIJ]‘I P THE DAILY BEE. QOUNCIL BLUFFS. 7Thurslay Morning August 6, e FSUBSCRIPTION RATES, By Cartler = - - - = 20 nenta per woek <14~ PR ~ §10.00 per year OFFICE: No. 7 Poarl Stroet, Near Broadway. MINOR MLNTION. Sea J. Reiter's summer styloe. Two drunke were disposed of in police <ourt yesterday. Tho fire alarm can only be depended on in ono thing, and that is, belng immed- iate. Permit to marry has boen given Daniel A. Loomis and Elvlra Hill, both of this <ity. Justice Abbott yesterday married F. R. Stowell, of Avoca, and Louisa Fraser, of Walnut. Speedy steeds aro arriving daily at the driving park and going into training for the fall races. The U. P. trains from the west arrived all on sohedule time yesterday, it being the first time for over a week. The case against William Boehning for eclling liquor toa minor is to be heard by Justice Abbott next Monday. Tur Bee is in receipt of the premium list of the Mills county, to be held at Glenwnod September 10, 11 and 12, John Madden, for taking one of his vacations, without permit, has been re- lensed from duty at tho Rescue house. Lon Weatfall, who tried to commit suicide by taking morphino about a week ago, is very low and it is doubtful wheth- er he can recover. Justice Schurz seems to bo a favorite with the Omaha folk. Yesterday he married another couple from there, Aus- tin W. Daily and Dora Pielhog. John Nelson, who was complained of for selling iquors to Phillips’ son, has compromised the matter with the parties most aggrieved and the case has been dismissed. Mr. Dohany is preparing to make some improvements in the interior of his opera house. Ho has engagod Mr. Miller to froscoo the entrance, and also to paint some more scenery. It is said that the report about the mayor and some of the aldermen having supposed to be on it, and as his old beat was quite (uiet under his oversight, it is | probable that ho was called elsewhero by other duties. The report reaches hore that a young man from this city, who has been rusti- cating at one of the popular summer ro- sorts with a lady friend, came near meet- ing his death as the result of a lover's quarrel, in which the woman shot at him, the ball just grazing him, but inflicting no wound, It is to be hoped, for the snko of the young man’s family at least, that there is no truth in the report, but if true it may wake him up to the fact taat he ought to be carrying himself fer different from what he has during the past year or s0. Messrs, P, Jones and 1" Landsiedel, West Side soloonists, are in trouble, Their stocks of liquors were seized last Friday by the town authorities. Num- erous kegs of beer and bottles that smelled like the “‘biggest distillery on sarth” were found. A portion of the contraband goods is thought to be the property of private citizens, who bought the liquor for “medicinal and culinary purposes.” 1t 1s a cold day when a West Sider gets left on a snako bite, or has no beer to put into hls applo pies. The meorit of the case will be tried August Oth, - Crawford Co, Bulletin, Deputy Sheriff Clatterbuck leaves to- day for Mt, Pleasant, where he takes Mue, McIntyre, who has been adjudged insane. He will also transfer a number of incurables from Mt. Pleasant to the asylum at Davenport. It seems that the Mt. Dleasant institution is crowded, and as vhis county has its full share, it must caro for some of its patients elsewhere, A plan is being talked of for caring theso incurables at the poor farm, thus saving the county some expense, as the foes amount to quite a heavy eum, which might be expended at home, provided they grumbled a good deal, and instead of ’:u-lnu grateful, expressed themselves as thinking that when Alderman ) L3 ter returned he would sce that those who bought the checks shall get pretty near face value for them, If the city credit has sunk 8o that a workingman can oly got sixty cents on the dollar, it is time that the present administration got out from under its present heading, *‘Work- ingmen’s Ticket. - e— Chew May Queen. A. M. Wilson, in which £5,000 is claimed for city warrants held by her, which she has bought in from time to time. The war- rants are of all dates, from 1882 up to the present year, and wero issued to various partios on different accounts, the parties receiving them selling themat a dis- count for cash. The petition sets forth that payment has been refused by the city, and now judg- ment is nsked with interest. It has been the avowed policy of the city to transfer cash from the police fund to the general fund, £500 at a time, to call inand pay old outstanding warrants in the order of their issuance, but it seems tho city hasnot caught up yet, and so suit is brought. e A fresh shipment of cheroots just in Best in the city—b cent. cach. From the West Side Dispatch we glean the particulars of two distressing acci- dents in that locality. Last Wednesday Mr. John Campbell was thrown from the seat of a self-binder and his leg badly wrenched and knee-joint misplaced. He lay helpless in t he field for two hours before his condition was discovered by friends. Opiates were necessary to re- lieve the pain. Three miles south of West Side, Mr. Gieorge Doerr, in the employ of Mr. Peter Arnson, attempted to remove a bunch of weeds which clog- ged the self-binder and assist it to de- liver the bundle, when the twine shuttle went through his hand, crushing the gone east isa canard, sot afloat to con- ceal tho fact that the council is holding another secrat meeting. The Presbyterian ladies are to give an exposition, opening September 24, to con- tinue one week. 1t will include an art exhibition, bazaar, fruits and flowers, and entertainments each evening, The Oakland primary class of the re- publicans have selected W. T. Wilcox, W. W. Belger, and W. II, Freeman as delogatcs, and while uninterested they freely express a préference for Manning, 1t is talked that some of the members of the bar are anxious that an attorney should be placed in the offico of the Jjustice of the peace, and William Sears’ name 18 being mentioned favorably, on <ondition that he could be prevailed on to accopt the nomination. The opening of Max Moan's hotel, the Creston house, a description of which ho- tel was given in yesterday's Brr, ocourred last night, and was a happy affair, and largely attended. The Bohemian band gave fine music, dancing, a fine spread, and other needfuls were provided. Probably the timid old dame got a little nervous and was afraid to read it to the children. The Union stock yards have been thoroughly disinfected, and as they have hiad no Texas fover thero since last May there is no danger whatever of the dis- <aso showing itself, The yards are now prepared to receive the heavy shipments expected soon, Everything isin good repair, and the yards are stocked with plenty of No.’1 hay. When the present city administration was begging the sufirages of the people, the ples was made that it was a ‘*work- ingmen’s ticket,” and the mayor particu- larly laid]stress upon this, hired bands, and made speeches for workingmen’s meetings—so called—and made a great hurrah, A delegation of workingmen called at Tue Bre office yesterday, and asked that publicity be given through thelr favorite organ to what they deemed the unjust and treacherous manner in which they were being treated. 1t will be remembered that in response to the domands and pleadings of many citizens who were suflering in purse and in health on account of stagnant water, the mayor decided to set men at work digging ditches, and clearing out the creek, so as to give at lowst tomporary ro. ief, Mr. Hathaway was made foreman of the work, and it is said that, his instructions were to got men at $1.75 a day, if ho could, if not to pay $2, us the work must be done at once. These men say that aboat thirty men were thus employed, and that betore going to work they were informed that they would get $1.70 per day in cash, and that they would be paid off at the end of each woek. With this understanding they went at it, working in the mud and water day after day, & hard, dirty, and by no means healthy employment. No pay came, either in cash or warrants, and yosterday they wore told they need work no longer, Stll no pay. They were fold that the city would have to pess_ on their bills, and that no warrants could be issued to thern until Mayor Vaughan's roturn, and as he had gone east, and there was no telling when he would re- turn—perhups by the 15th—and he had leftno blank warrants signed They were told by their boarding Louse-keepers that they could pay their board in warrants at sixty cents on the dollar, which would leave them $1.06 for a day's work, which considering the character of Ihu work done.
