6 rHE DAILY BEE-~-COUNCL BLUFFS WEDN SDAY,AUGUST 6, 1884, THE DAILY BEE. COUNCIL BLUFFS. Wednesday Mo;ning August 6, ISUBSORIPTION RATES. By Oarrler = = = 20 nenta per week By Mall = = = = $10.00 per yoar OFFICE: No. 7 Poar] Street, Near Broadway. MINOR MENTION. See J. Reiter's summer atyles, All the hardware stores aro selling Cloveland badges. The Y. M. O. A, had one of its pleassnt ontortainments last evening. Nick Calbush now lies in jail for try- ing to thump Marshal Guanella. Tho republican county delegate con- vention will be held next Tussday. The Carpenters’ Union meoting will be held Thursday evening at the court house. A force of men were at work on the driving dark yesterday putting it in good condition. Permit to wed was yesterday granted (oo, C. Miller and Catherine Buchanan, both of Neola, Justico Schurz yesterday married Alanson Case to Melinda A, Farrell, both of Omaha. The Council Bluffs serenading club will give an open air concert in Bayliss’ park on Friday evening. H. H. Horne & Co. have stocked up on ‘*May Queen,” which is fast becom- ing the popular fine cut here. The examinations at the normal insti- Luto commence to-day and will continue three days, olosing the session. One of D. H. McDonald wagons yesterday collided with Mr. Wick- ham's buggy, smashing oue of the buggy wheels., The Union Pacifictrain was anhourand forty mizutes late yesterday morning, and the outgoing traina were delayed in consequence, The county board met yesterday in special session to grant permits to those who want to sell liquors for medical and other legitimate purposes. Lena Linderman has commenced di- vorce proceedings against Charles Linder- man, olaiming that Charles has been too intimate with other women, There was no quorum to bo had at the regular meeting of the city council Mon- day night. There seem to be altogethor 100 many aldermen at large. & Co.'s THE CRESTON HOUSE. oW Mor Mot His Bronght 1t to f the Front Raak, rhe Opening To Night, This evening is the time set for the | grand opening, or rather re-opening, of | the Creston house. The name has be- come a familiar one, and yet the house | has been 8o enlarged and improved that | it means more than ever before. The new addition with 25 feet frontage on Main street, and depth of 100 feet, has been finished and furnished, and the rest of the house completely changed and improved, o that there isa big pile of stone and brick, the entire frontage be- ing near 100 feet and the depth 100 feet. The front is of stone, three stories high, and presen's a 'iandsome appearance. The interior of the house is very attrac. tve. Sixty-four sleeping rooms, besides parlors, dining rooms, ete. Every modern improvement and convenience has been provided, including fire alarms running from and to each room, electric call bells also connecting each room with the oftice, firo escapes, and, in fact, overy thing noedful for the safety and comfort of the guests. It is a hotel of which Max Mohn may well feel proud, and one which will enable him to accommodate hls many friends and customers very happily. Max Mohn may well bo congratulated on his success. He settled in Council Bluffs June th, 1869, and for ten years worked for wagos, by industry and econ- omy, managing to gather a littlo means togother, and then opened a boarding house on Main street just below where his fine hotel now stands. Four years ago last May he completed building, where ho now is, on ground bought of Judge Paigo and the Odd Fellows’ as- sociation. His business increasing and more soon being needed he com- menced last fall the addition to the hotel, which is now completed, Instead of hoarding his profits, he has invested them in building improvements as fast as possible, and now has a hotel property which is valued by him at from $50,000 to $60,000. His enterprise is commend- able, and under his popular management the hotel will doubtless continue to be one of the favorite ones. o Tl May Queen Fine Cut Chewing Tobacco at Opera House Cigar Store. Try it. SKINNER WITHDRAWS. He is Not To Get One-Third of the Thousand Dullars, The Divy Now Fixed, The squabble over the $1,000 reward offered for the capture of Reynolds is The Temperance Alliance meota at the rooms of the Y. M, O. A. Thurs- day evening to consider ways and means for enforcifig the prohibition law. W. W. Wallaco has been given the contract for furnishing coal to the in- atitution for the deaf and dumb. Jacoh Lentzinger will furnish bread, and Pace & Sohmidt the meat. Mre. Rockwell has filed an informa- tion before Justice Abbott, charging Wm. Bochning, of the beer garden, with hav- ing sold liquor to her son, Clarence, who is only 15 years of age. Samuel Day, one of the beat printers in the city, an attache of The (ilobe, has been chosen president of the Typograph- ical Union, in place of M. McWorkmayy who lately moved from here. Who were the sixteen, who, out of 177 favored Chapman in his own ward? Of course nine of thera were the delegates whom he had named on his ticket, but where in the world did ho get seven more! It seems that the man with only six- teen friends in his own ward still has in- terest in the dear old lady, which per- haps accounts for the old lady's silence about the way he got sot down on by 161 to 16, 1t is confidently predicted by some of the Marshalltown officials that if Sheriff McCOord should die from the gun.shot wounds, by which he is now suffering, no power can stop the lynching of Reynolds, who did the shooting. The republicans of Creston township have sclected as delegates to the county convention A, R, Prentice, and James S, Wanson, who are instructed to vote for O, H, Manniog, for congress, with John ¥, Stone as second choice, John Morris has commenced suit against the city, claiming $2,000 dama- ges because the city filled up the streets adjoining his property, caused water to oveiflow it, and causing himself and fam. ily to be sick. This is but one of many. Col, Chapman says he worked hard *‘feeling the pulse of the people.” Ile must have covnted wrong, for when the pulse-throbs were counted officially, it was found that while there were 161 votes against him there were only 16 for him. The dear cld grandmother was asham- ed at the way in which her guardian, the Colonel, was downed not only by the city at large but in his own ward. She had not a word to say, The old lady wiped her glai and tossing aside her serap-book, read eagerly the full acoount of the caucus as given in Tur Bex, Jack Bhields was before the police court yesterday on a charge of kicking up a row at the beer garden Sunday night, He was acquitted, There seems to have been some wysterious batteriog of faces up there that evening, but from all that can be gained from witnesses it wasa mere friendly seufile, and no one meant now ended. It will be remembered that Tur Brr exposed the fact that a written agreement hud been privately entered into by which Officers Hurley and Towns, who captured the man, were to submit to having Chief Skinner get one-third, the same as they. It appears that Chief Skinnor was not so much to blawe for claiming a third as some other officials who urged him on, and who ad- vocated the justice of giving him $333 simply because he was the superior officer, Chiof Skinner has seen the mistake of such a course and like a little man has concluded not to insist on a divy, the following being the written withdrawal: “I, Thomas Skinner, chief of police of Council Bluffs, Iowa, do hereby re- leaso and relinquish all of ~my claims and interests in and to the rewards heretofore offered by any and all oked Up By Police, The polico force in July made 157 ar. rests, the different offenses being as fol- lows. Why, even the court would not escape. Your Honmor knows that the court night bit the end off of a cucumber pickle, stuck it in his mouth, scratched a tooth- Your Honor was a cigar. Sheriff Dan Farrell has given his note for Officer & Pusey’s bank. Of this amount $260 is to be paid to the railway men who gave the officers the pointers on the man, and tho remaining 8750 to bo di- vided cqually between Officers Hurley and Towns. ~ Just how this will suit the littlo mayor, who was so eager for his bo seen, that official being now absent from the city.
