b IT'HE DAILY BEE---COl lake on Seventh street, has caused much complaint on the part of those living south of the lake, and whoso premises have been dampened by the water thus being pumped out. There seems to be a fight among re- publicans in the city as to who should carry the city this evening at the pri- maries, Tne Bee ‘‘has vo candidate” to present, but it thinks the ingenuity being displaged by persons whose colors were tested once is something amusing, to sy the least. A man named McDougal has com- plained of Nick Kuhn for the larceny of a trunk. It appears that MecDougal boarded with Kuhl, but was away when Kuhl broke up and went to Mills county, taking the trunk with him. Kuhl gave bonds before Justice Vaughan, Saturday, THE DAILY BEE. CQOUNCIL BLUFFS. : Monday Morning Angust 4, onts per week + §10.00 por yoar OFFIOE: No, 7 Pear] Stroet, Near Broadway. MINOR MENTION. See J. Reiter's summer styles. The republicans hold their primaries to-night. Conrad Price’s artesian well is now down 830 feet. Fairmount park is growing in favor as ot charge, a picnio place. Brick sidewalks are being laid on Lower Main street, and yet lots are al- lowed to remain unfilled, serving as basins for filthy pools. Judge Lyman opens up the circuit court at Denison to-day. Work on the institution for the deaf and dumb is progressing well. The democratic street banner was bad- 1y torn by the wind yesterday. The Boys in Blue will have a business meeting at the court house Wednesday night. The city council is to meet in regular session to-night, if a quorum can be had, which is doubtful. Henry Wich and Alma Wilhelmie Josephine Schurz, both of Avoca, have gained permit to wed. The degree of Rebekah, I. 0. 0. F., will meet in regular session at the hall this evening to install officers. Republicans should attend the pri- maries to-night, and not let them be captured by sly politicians. Lieutenant Governor Manning is said the city administration that he can defy all law / Rev. T. S. Bovel!, the newly chosen co-pastor of the Rev. Mr. Lemen, of the Baptist church, officlated for the first time there yesterday, preaching his in- troductory sermon, which was pronoun- ced very fine by those who heard it, and the prediction is made that he will soon becomo a favorite here in the pulpit as well as socially. The barbers are circulating an agree- ment to close on Suadays. 1f enough signatures can be obtained the council is to be asked to pass an ordinance prohib- iting the opening of the shops. Schofield, “‘bosses,” who do their own work are in favor of shutting up, while those who employ help are against it. The young lady after whom the shirt- less lover made so ridiculous a chase the other day is now in Neola, and he now now seems to be on the inside track, he living there too, whilehis rival is still here writing letters daily to the fair one,§jwho is supposed to be sharing their contents langhingly with the lover who is nearest, and just now seems dearest. The attendance at yesterday afternoon’s Y. M. C. A. meeting was very large. In fact it is apparent from the attendance of late that some more roomy place will soon have to be selected for theso meetings. A branch meeting has hecn started in the southwest part of the city, over Smith's grocery store, and thirty to forty gather there every Sunday afternoon. Major Marshal, who for two years past has served acceptably as genoral agent of the Chicago & Northwestern at this point, is now succeeded by M. N. Babcock, a gentleman who is in all re- spects equal to the duties of the responsi- ble position. He was formerly general passenger agent of the Colorado Central and lately general agent of the C. & N. W. at Denver. While Major Marshall has many friends here whose best wishes will follow him wherever he may go, the welcome to Mr, Babcock will be on this account none the less hearty. Captaln Hayes has roturned, from Ains- worth, Neb., where he has been for some months past, and will resume his resi- dence in this city, and in partnership will be hereafter found in the Ogden house block, having purchased Harry Hatch's place. Daring his residence in Ainsworth Captain Hayes has been the city marshal of that place, and deputy sheriff, and as a token of how highly he was held in esteem there, he now has an elegant gold badge, presented to him by the citizens. He has no less friends here, whoare glad to welcome him back and will drop in on him at his now place. to have captured the Harrison county delegates to the congressional convention. The **pop” ordiance is creating some music among the saloon men. It should be called *“Pop goes the weasel” ordi- nance. Only one solitary anti-prohibitionist to asseas’in police court Saturday. A hurd day's work for a $2,000 judge and a $200 clerk. The Woman's Christian union now mnumbers about fifty members, and some very successful and practical work is being done. If the chief of police insists on taking one-third of the $1,000 reward, the pro- priety of his being named Skinner will not be doubted. Rev. Cyrus Hamlin preached yester- day, for the last time, at the _Congrega- tional church, He leaves this week on a trip eastward. The politicians were busy yesterday, if it was Sunday. Cannot the city pass an ordinance shutting up politics as well saloons Sundays? The county board of supervisors meet to-morrow to act on petitions for permits to sell liquor for medicinal, sacramental, mechanical, and culinary purposes. Somebody Saturday night went through lke Kissell's potato patch near the driving park, digging up and carry- ing away about a wagon load of potatoes, Next Thursday evening there will be a meeting of the prohibition alliance at the Y. M. C. A. rooms to consult in ref- erence to the enforcement of the present law. The Knox township delegates to ihe republican county convention are: J. A, Hake, E. A. Consigney, E. W. Davis, ‘W. Benjamin, J. B. Blake, and H. A. Brown. Lorene, the mare lately sold by Dr. Carey, of this city, to Mr. Hill, of Chi- cago, on Friday last lowered her record to 2:17§, winning the 2:20 pacing race at Cleveland. Over five hundred persons have already guessed on the number of beans in the glass jars in Templeton & Lamb's place. The lowest guess 1s 2,600 and the high- est 76,000, ** There seems to be some hitch about the bonds issued lately by the city, and Mayor Vaughan has gone post haste to New York to see about getling them rightly placed One of the prominent anti-Manning republicans was busily rushing about trying to fix matters, saying that *‘if Man- ning gets the delegates from this city he will capture the congressional nomina- tion,"”, This will be the last week of the nor- mal institute, The forenoons are given B That Reward, The number of claimants for a share in the §1,000 reward for the capture of Roynolds, the Marshalltown desperado, are multiplying so that officers Hurley and Towns, who caught the man, decided yesterday to divide up the pot before any moro claimants could be heard from, as another week would bring them into hopeless bankruptey. According to the written agreement in Mayor Vaughan’s safe, the chief-of-police is to have one- third because he received the postal card offering the reward and describing Rey- nolds, The mayor is of course entitled to something, because if he had not appointed Hurley and Towns on the force they would not have got the man, Philander Judson to J. B. Richart, lot 8 block 3, Judeon’s 1st add to Neola, £60. Total sales $810. e e— Messrs Cocke & Morgan will open Monday in tho store formerly occupied by J. W.
