There will be a brief service at the | house this afternoon at 2 o'clock and the remains will be taken to Dixon, for in- tormert. Mrs. Stiles was aged about 55 years, and has been in failing health for some time, largely due to the burden of sorrow which has fallen upon her by the | doath of her husband, and then by the | tragic killing of her son Charles Stiles, |in Chtoago. She was an estimable lady, _ | and had many friends in her old home, | Itis understood that the reward offered | for the capture of the desperado Rey- nolds is to be divided between Officers Hurley and Towns., This is as it should bo. Theso officers showed pluck and shrewdness enough to almost atono for whatever errors the whole police force has ever committod. A great deal of fault has been found with the new police force, but certainly Hurley and Towns have shown themselves men of mettle, and theydeserve much pryise besides the reward, Hurley, especially, had good grit to down the man as he did for the fellow had a revolver pointed full at him, when the _officer tripped and then threw him. He took greater chances than most men want to take even for big money. The residence of Mr, C. J. Johnson in Kiron was destroyed by fire last Wed- uneaday afternoon, together with nearly all his furniture, personal effects, family clothing, ete. Mr. Johnson was in the harvest field when the alarm was given, but notwithstanding the most vigorous efforts livtle could be saved, ‘The fire originated in the second story from causes unknown, filling the chamber with smoke and outting off ingrese. Hurd appeared before Justice Abbott yesterday on a charge of abusing his wife, and gave $100 bonds to appear ogain August 2d, and promises in the meantime to keep the peace. Six or seven snits have already DLeen commenced against those who have not paid their toll tax, and about twenty others are being prepared. Those who aro still behind had better hurryto the front. The family of Charles Duncan, who was sent to jail for sixty days for steal- ing & pair of pantaloons from Beno’s stors, were yosterday endeavoring to get him released, begging piteouely that they needed his comfort and support. Word has been received that Jimmie Purdy, a young man who recently left Denison for Nebraska, died suddenly near Coolridge, in that state. He was about 21 years of age, and was a stepson of Mr. N. Richarde, of Dow City. The remains are to be brought back to Déni- son. 1t insaid death was the resultof a sunstrd¥p. The Barber shop of Messrs, Harb & Schmidt is in charge of the plasterers, after which the walls will be papered with lithographs. These gentlemen have been saving and buying lithographs for some time back in anticipation of this atyle of decoration and expect to make their walls quite attractive. ‘This evening a farewell reception will be tendered Rev. Cyrus Hamlin, at the residence of W. W, Wallaco. The affair is to be informal, and it is the desire to give an opportunity for all of Mr. Ham- lin's frierds, even if they are not of his church or congregation, to greet him so- cially, and hence the invitation is a gene. ral and public one, Yestorday was a quiet one in polico court, The only case was that of George Smith, the proprietor of the Phoenix saloon, who was charged with assault and battery, pleaded guilty and was fined $9.60. It seems that when the row broke out in that saloon the other night, Smith took & club and went for the combatants, and instead of uieting the row it became ten times worse. Tho othors got off without any fine, but Smith caught aj dose. Superintendent King, of the new gov- ernment building, says he expects to re- ceive orders very soon in regard to the gk. See advt. in another column, Write for particulars, HOME CULTURE. An Academy and Industrial School to be Established in Connec- tion With the Home of the Fricndless, The work and growth of the Home of the Friendless is quite familiar to most of the citizens and to many residents of other places. It will be of special inter- est to the many friends of the Home here and throughout the west to learn that an important enlargement of plans and work has been decided upon. It is nothing leas than the establishment of what will be known as the Home Acade- my and Industrial school, to be conduct- ed in connection with the Home. This institution is to be open on the first Monday in September, or on the second Monday at the latest. Mrs. Bovell, whose husband has just taken the posi- tion of co-pastor of the Baptist church, and co-laborer with Rey. J. G. Lemen, is to take charge of a kindergarten depart- ment, and will also teach classes in French and German. She is a graduate of Shurtleff college, the same institution of which her husband is an alumnus, Being a native German, and having llved in Fraace several years, she is thoroughly at home in both those languages, while in teach- ing she has had considerable experionce, having conduoted a kindergarten and other classes in Cii i years. The present p forenoons devoted to kindergarten work, and the afternoon hours to clusses in German, French, and also music, she be- ing accomplished in this, too. Mr. Bovell is to teach mathematics and other studies, and other teachers will be secured as the work demands. 1t is the intention not to confine the schocl to this city, but already & number of students, among them some young ladies, from other parts of the couutry, have ex- pressed their intention of coming here to attend school. A great deal of time and money has already been put into the Home to bring the work up to where it is now, and these new plans demand still further effort and greater gonerosity, but if push- ed to a happy consummation, there is no doubt that while muoh good s being done, such a school of instruction will be a credit and benefit to the city, draw- ing here many students from elsewhere, and giviog Council Bluffs a good name and fair fame, The new enterprise, add- ed to the other work of the Home, will require additional support, but the man- ner in which support to previous plans has been given warrants the managers in believing that this lster and greater en- terprige will meet with the approval and further help of the iriends of the institu- tion, and the public at large. By the old Mosiac law which the Jews still consider as binding upon them this rite must be performed when the child is eight days old, providing the child’s health permits. Even in this land of reading and general information many have an idea that this rite is of the past, and will be surprised to learn that it has been frequently observed in this city, and few there are outside of the He- brow circles who have any idea of what the ceremonies consist. At this gather- ing Rev. J. Chermies officiated as he| g has had several provious occasions of the kind hers. Ho is a Hungarian, who served in this capacity in the old coun- try. Thoe firat part of the service con- sisted of reading in the Hebrew, of course, passages of the old scritpures and Mosaic law. Then followed the cere- mony of bleasing the child, and the cir- cumcision, the whole service taking about ton minutes. After this a feast was spread, of which the guaests partook, and congratulations expressed. e — Mexican grass hammocks at reduced prices at Seaman's, 406 Broadway. i Pity the Fallen, To the Editor of Tur Bre: I notice that your columns are quite free for voicing themisfortunes and griev- ancen of those who feel that they have been abused. Iam one of thess. For years 1 have been a resident of the Fourth ward, and have been serving the public without getting a cent lo, these many years. Night after night during the rain and storm I have stood at my corner holding a light - e benefit of those Who were trying to find thelr way home. I have often let some weary wayfarer lean on me until rested enough to go on his way. While thus standing on my corner several months ago, a lot of horrid dirt wagons came along, and dumped their contents about my and before I could move was buried to my shoulders, and the dirt packed about me so tightly that T was not able to get out. I appealed in vain, I was brought to this place by the president ot the gas company, but he says now that he is now no longer my adopted father, but that 1 belong to the city, because I have been in its omploy o long. The city says that it has nothing to do with me, so here T stand still nearly buried. The neighbors all around’ here have been in the habit of giving me letters and pa- pera to hold for them un- til the carrier shall come for them, but now I am so deep in the mud that theso got soilod. Dogs como along and besmonr my glassos even.
