THE DAILY BEE-- COUNCIL BLUFFS, MONDAY JULY 28 1884, COUNCIL BLUFFS, __Mondny Mornifi‘v. Jrulyr28v. i FSUBSORIPTION RATES, 20 nonts per week $10.00 por yoar OFFICE! No. 7 Pear] St Near Broadway. MINOR MENTION, The council meets to night. See J. Reiter's summer goods. Hotels complain of light travel. T. L. Childs has returned from a few ‘weeks visit to Colorado. There was no service at St. ZEplscopal church yesterday. Finley Burke, of Orange City, is viit- ing his parents and friends here. W. L. Hill is the father of a nice little lady who arrived in the city Friday night, The Methodist church was again oc- cupied yesterday, it having been repaired and made safe. ‘Wm. Brown, John Barton and Jacob Shaupo were each fined $7.50 Saturday for being drunk. William Harris was sent to jail for thirty days on yesterday for stealing Mr. Meyers' saddle. A. W. Courson rested up at the Bech- tele yesterday before tackling ice cream at Lincoln again, It is stated; that Council Bluffs has a debt of $6 per capita, while Des Moines’ debt is $25 per capita. The young colored men of the city are to meet Wednesday night to form a Blaine and Logan club. Philip Phillips is to give a concert at Broadway Methodist church Wednesday and Thursday evenings. M. B. Brown, while playing ball yes- torday afternoon, slipped on a bat, fell and sprained his ankle badly. The heavy rain last night caused the creek to overflow in several places, but no damage of any account was done, The electric light company will soon start up a third dynamo, and then sev- enty-five lightsjwill be kept blazing. Judge Raed has dismissed the injunc- tion case of the new city hall at Hamburg and the work is going along rapidly. On Saturday afternoon Justice ‘Vaughan married Mr. H. G. Counsman and Miss Y. K. Bailey, both of Omaha. During the rain last night, the foun- dation of Mr. Louch’s residence, corner Eighth and Sixth avenue was inundated. Frank Phillips, the son ot Axhandle Phillips, was arrested yesterday for being drunk and threatening to kill his family. County Surveyor Tostevin has patented a parallel rule and protraction, which is #aid to be greatly appreciated by draughta- men. Hon. Lafe Young, cf the Atlantic Telegraph, arrived here Saturday for his weekly reyiew of the congressional situ- ation, The Blaine and Logan club are talking of going the democrats one better, by getting two street banners, one for Main street and the other for Broadway. Dr. Wade Cary now has the well- known trotting stallion, Glenwood, un- der his charge, who will see that he is in good condition for the fall races. Mrs, M. S. Benner's residence on Benton street, corner of Washington avenue, was entered by thieves Friday pight, but no plunder of value secured, Tho work of excavating on Broadway has commenced preparatory to paving. The paving will commence at the Moth- odist church and proceed toward the river. The question is still boing asked— “What are the prohibitionists going to do about it?” No one seems able to an- swor, aud the saloons are ruuning as usual, Paul's Mus, Cusic, wife of ex-policeman Jack Cusic, has been very ill for the past few days, and for several hours was not ex- pected to live, but is now somewhat better. The Oakland Acorn gives Lieutenant Governor Manning a half column send-off as the strongest and most unobjection- able congressional candidate that could be selected by the republicans, Glenwood has a new paper, ‘The Democrat,” published by Richardson & Willi If it keeps up to its standard of its first issue, it cannoé but be suc- cessful. Itis clean-faced and full of news. By some sort of & blunder in turning on the fire pressure apparatus in police headquarters that building had a narrow escape frombeing deluged with water. As it was the front room was protty well wet down, There have been $40,000 of the paving bonds of the city sold to a banking house in Portland, Me., at 1 per cent premium, and accrved interest. Of this £40,000 only §9,000 is for paving intersections of streets. Those hogsheads on Bancroft street still prove a stumbling obstacle to side- walk pedestrians, and ought to be re- moved, 'There is plenty of room in the city for the storage of goods elsewhere than on the sidewalks. ™ Samuel Western, living in the south. ern part of the city has lost three cows from a peculiar sort of disease, the chief symptoms of which are loss of appetite and weak back, Some of his neighbors here also lost cows in a like manner, Dr. Cross has obtained a temporary Injunction from Judge Aylesworth re- strsinicg tho conetable from ojocting HE DAILY BEE.] him from the house he now occupies, Justice Schurz, on trial of the case pre- viously, having issued a writ of ouster. Among those who are employed by Mr, Wickham, carrying the hod and do- ing mason work, is one who is a Polish = | count, another who is a son of a Des Moines alderman, and another who is & son of Col. Mapleson, the opera man- " | ager. J. W. Peregoy has returned from Du- buque, where ho has been in the interest of the fall races here. He reports that most of the sportsmen whom he inter- viewed oxpreesed themselves as favorable to Council Bluffs and anxious to come here. Informations were filed Saturday against parties owning property along the alley running from the city building to Main " street, for maintaining a nuisance, the alley being too fifthy. The work of cleaning up was commenced and the cases dismissed. Belle Clover is now sald to be running an establishment in Cheyenne, and gath- ering in many ducats. It is said that her “George” in getting transportation for the old lady and her girls got special rates for them as & dramatic company. They are supposed to play *‘Barriors Burned Away."” Next Thursday evening a farewell re- ception is to be tendered Rev. Cyrus Hamlin, at the residence of Mr. W. W. Wallace. The members of the Congre- gational church and their friends are invited 0 attend. It is expected that Mr. Hamlin will occupy the pulpit for one or two more Sundays beforo taking final leave. A man by the name of Knight, who works at the packing house, tried to commit suicide yesterday morning about 7 o'clock by cutting his throat. He suc- ceeded in making a small gash, but noth- ing serious. Last night he was lying at his residence, near the packing house, very comfortable, George Madison, who has been serving as a substitute letter carrier, taking the place of any of the regular carriers who chauced to be sick or otherwise laid off, has been made a regular and given a route, thus making six regular carriers in- stead of five. A new substitute carrier will soon be appointed, and will find plen- ty of work, as the fifteen days vacation allowed each of the six carriers will give the substitute three months' steady work. The man arrested on last circus day on the charge of abducting a little girl from Sioux City, is to havea hearing before tho mayor to-day. A letter has been received from the mayor of Sioux City, stating that the girl's parents are poor and rather ignorant half-breeds, and that this fellow roprasentod himselfto them as a dotective living in Councll Bluffs, He promised to take the girlas his own daughter, adopt her, provide for her, and educate her, and on these promises they let her g0 with him, Mayor Vaughan has been so besleged with complaints about Indian creek from the flooded and the sufforing that he has been trying to get the council to sign a paper authorizing him to set men at work to fix the creek so as to get temporary re- liof. Thus far he has been very success- ful in getting the aldermen to sign the paper. He threatens that if he cannot get the council to co-operate in this he will use his power to appoint special policemen and will detail these policemen to dig out tho creek, and do such other work as is necessary, Whoop-lah, A new agricultural implement house is about to be started in this city, the firm title to be J. Kleeb & Co. Mr. Kleeb is from Panama, whilo Mr. Frank Cooley, his partner, has been manager for James Thomas & Co., the well known Main street house in the same line. 'The new firm have leased the Mynster buildings on upper Broadway, and will confine themselves to the retail business together with some tranaferring. Both gentlemen being well known, and experienced in the business they will doubtless have no difliculty insecuring a liberal share of the business in that line. Officer Donovan was over from Omaha yestorday, searching for & man named Lynch, who was wanted for the larceny of $135 from a man who was boarding at No. 212 Tenth street. This man clalms that Lynch had asked him a day or two before for the loan of fifty cents, and he had granted the request, going to his room with Lynch and getting the money from his trunk, where he kept it. It is thought that in this way Lynch learned where the money was, and afterwards went to Lynch's room got the key from the pocket of a pair of pantaloons hang- ing on the wall, opened the trunk and got the money, The Omaha officers got littlo or no information about Lynch and it is reported that Lynch 1s related to somo of the city officials, which may account for the fact that the police here knew nothing about any such man being here. A short time ago a stranger died under pect circumstances, at Andrew Dill's place, scuthwest of Glenwood. It is now learned that his name was Murcus Moss, and that his parents live near Ploasant Hill, Mo., his father being a farmer in good circumstances. 1t seems that some time ago he was sun-struck, and as a re- sult was subjoct to great nervous prostra- tion at times, and while laboring under | ] these attacks, his mind was more or less affected. When he left home he bought a ticket for Omaha, which was found on his person. | |His family have relatives in Nebraska, It Is suppored that he left the train at the Junction, aud while laboring under a temporary aberration of the mind wandered ofl into the country until he reached Mr. Dill's place, Here | it is evident that he regainedhis faculties for he conversed rationally with members of Dill's family. He has long been in the habit of using laudanum as an antl- dote for nervousness, and the theory is that by accident he took an overdose of the drag. BEATEN BY A BRUTE. A Wife's Story of Her Inhaman Treatment By Her Husband, Which It Proved Snounld se Him to Stretch. Chiarges O A middle-nged woman, accompanied by her little daughter, hobbled up the stairs and limped into Justice Vaughan's office Saturday afternoon, groaning with the pain of blows, whichshe said had been given her by him who had sworn to cher- ish and protect her. The woman gave her name as Mary Marshal and her hus- band’s name as John R. Marshal. She said that her husband had been cruelly beating her, and her appearance corrobo- rated the atatement. Her shoulders and back bore great bruises, which showed that she had been actually mauled, ana De. Bellinger and others who examined the woman’s condition had their indigna- tion aroused to such a pitch that if Judge Lynch had jurisdiction in this city they would have sought no stay of proceed- inge. E\norlwlrunt had been issued for the husband's arrest, and while walting for the return of constable Wesley and officer Dunn, the woman gave Tue Bee man some further details of her troubles and trials, and the daughter corroborated the statements. She said that the trou- ble between them was about money mat- ters mainly, Ho wanted her to give him some of her earnings and property. Al though the mother of ten children, she had boon the chief support of the family, and by re-covering chair bottoms, earn- oed three to four dollars per day, she had been able to accumulate a little property in Strestaville, and had just got her ggme paid for. Because she would not deed him this property or let him mortgage it, he had got angry and had thus beaten her. According to her statement, he had beaten her before, but not so badly. This] time he first knocked her down with a pieco of scantling, and then grabbing some dead sun-flower stalks he thrashed her with these, al- though she was on her knees begging him to desist, and several men standing in the street would not interfere. She also let out some of his past his- tory. She said that he was sentenced to the penitentiary in Lincoln for three years for rape, and having served his time wis let out about a year ago, but had not boen out but a short time before he at- tempted to misuse a little girl, and that he had even attempted brutality with his own children, The man was brought into court by the officrs and there showed that he had about such a temper as the woman de- scribed, He brought along some sun- flower stalks in his hands, which he wanted to use as evidence, and he pro- guacd trying them on Attorncy Mynster’s ack, but that gentleman seon made him quiet down and behave himself. The fellow pleaded guilty to assault, and on this charge was fined $100, or thirty days in jail. Several other charges were preferred, one for threats, one of assault with intont to do great bodily injury, also one for assaulting the little daughter. The bail on these was fixed at £1,000 and the cases continued until to- day. In the meantime he lies in jail sorving out his term ef thirty days. = If he is! guilty of one-half thy. misdeeds charged up to his account thero should be some way of making his brutal nature reaiizo that the way of such a transgres- aor {s vory, very hard. e Hundreds of srateful people who have been cured of Itheumat say Siloam Springs is ahead as a spe for that dis- See advt. in another column. o e o Real Estate Transfers, Counciy Brurrs, July 26, 1885, J.
