Gofng on With the Circus With Two Dead Men Under tho Seats - What the Boy Turned Out to Be ork Sun. 2, July 1.—The arrival of a strolling frontier circus in this tuwn the other day brovght together two old ring men who had not met before in several years. Dan Dement, now laid up here temporarily, was once tho manager of a circus in which Henry Tallifer, a por- former in the concern at present exhibit- ing in this city, was clown. Tho way they camo to be separated was developed in the course of an extended comparison of notes at the hotel tho other evening. The performance at the circus now hero was 1n full progress. The striped mule had just been led around the ring for a young woman _ to mount, and the clown, who had got off a few jokes with a local applica- cation had takon his position on a barrel to await developements, when a voico was heard from one of the top seats, ‘“Is that you, Hank Tallifer?” Everybody turned toward the spoaker, who proved to be Dement. Ho was standing up with his head, which other- wise would havo gone into tho canvas, slightly inclined. = The clown jumpod down from his perch, and looking up to theman wno addressed him answered: “That’s the name I used to carry.” *Cums up here, then, and shako " The clown made his way up to Dement, recognizad him in timo, and after a hear- ty interchange of salutations, resumed his place in the ring. When the pecform- arce was over, the two men met at the hotel and renewed their acquaintance. ““How did you know me with my paint on?” asked Tallifer. “ILnow you! I'd know you in Alaska, Your voice waslgfamiliac in the firat place, and in tha secoud, that gag of yours about the placer digging gave you away. 1 hadn'v heard that joke since the time the landslide struck us at Las Animas,” A crowd quickly assembled on the porch of the tavern, and, all hands hav- ing had something in_the way of liquor, Doment observed: *Wo meot somo very queer men in this business. Now Talli- fer aud 1 campaigoed it in this country when there wore precious few people here but Indians and prospectors. We were broken up finally, and have't seen each other until now. The circus that we wero with was organized over in Sonora, and we drifted northward until tinally, we got acroes the line into the territory. Weo had what was considered agood show in those days. 1 was the managor and the ring-master, and some times I did a little tumbling, I sold tickets, too, and bossed things generally. Talliter was the clown. There were two or three other performers, besides a fow greasers who did the heavy work and took caro of the stock. (o of tho per- formers was & young man named Den- ning. We picked him up in Sonora, but wo didn’t play him much. In those days nobedy asked where anybody came from e was there. We wanted a man, and he said he could do a few acts and could learn others, and so we hired him. Ile kept protty quiet most of the time, but that]was not unusual in this country.” “He did good work for us unnl we crossed the line, When wo struck Amer- 1can Buil he began to drink. ~ At nret his dissipation was not enough to bother us much, but the night we openedat a camp near whore Calabasas now siauds he took us all oft cur feet, We had about 200 men in the tent, and the first ride around had been completed. I had been selliv g tickets, and, having finished that business, went into the dressing-room and was preparing to make my appear- ance in the ring when I heard a couple of shots, followed by two more. There was nothing oxtraordinary about that and, although I must say I was somewhat sur- prised, I was just going out to sve what the trouble was, when Tallifer here came running into the dressing-room, with his AND AN UNSURPASSED ASSORTMENT OF Diamonds and Precious Stones, FULL LINE OF HOWARD' WALTHAM AND ELGIN WATCHES. The whole thing was done in an instant al- most, There was a great scattering in the vicinity of Denning. Then came two shots so close together that they sounded almost like one, und a second later there was anothor report, The smoko obscured the combatants, and for a fow moments no one could tell wheth- er tho trouble was over or not. Just then some of the fellows on the top seats raieed the carvas a little, and the wind coming in the smoke wassoon disapeared At the foot of the seats lay Denning, his white snd gold tights and spangles covered with blood, sand his revolver by bis side, I raised him a little, but he was dead. Men who sat near him at the show said that when Denning on tered the ring this man drow a revolver and fired at him twico without a word, and that Donning responded instantly with two shots, drawing his revolver from a belt which lay at the foot of the centre pole. The rest of tho performance 1 had seen myself. Tallifer horo was in the ring at the same time and got one of the bullets aimed at Denning in hia log, which caused him a good deal of trouble afterward. We searched every thing that both men had to see if wo could unravel the mystery, but the only clao we could find was a photograph of Denning found In & weliworn pocket. book in the dead stranger's coat. On the back of this photograph, which had the name and number of tho artiat, bt not the city, was a little writing desorip- tive of Denning, we prosume, though it did not tally with him, as wo had known him very well. One thing is certain, The man was looking for Deuning and ho tound him.” “The worat part of that affair,” said Tallor, *‘was that they mado us go on with the show, with thoso two mon laid out under the seats. 1 had a bullst hole through the calf of my lox also, but that made no diffsronce. 1 had to do my funny businoss all the sims, and 1 nover had & more approsiative a idicnce.” h was coarso know his name, A GInL Animas WANTED “What about that slido?” some one said. ““That's what broke up tho Groeat in. ternational and Transcontinental Circus,” said Tallifer. 1 lost each other after that uphoaval, and this is our first meoting sinco then. Tho truth of it is just th's.. We had mot with some ro- verzee, aud business dido't scem to be tirat class. Our rosources were limited, and just what to do wo did not know. If we could only gat a woman to join the party,’ I said ono day, ‘wo could make big money.’ It was like wishing for n sacrod olephant. Every one said that a woman would be a great eard, but in & Jcountry where women; were so scarce that money could bo rade by . ex- hibiting one in acircus, it was not s casy togot ons. Wo all thought the matter over and gave it up. ‘It's no use,’ every one said, Finally aftor along per- iod of silence, I mused: ‘If we could only find & boy, we might fix him up, and he'd do. We ha t somewhero in the packs two or three costumes for ladies.” A capital idea,’ was the response; ‘but where will we got the boy 1’ ““That was almost as much of a posor as tho other one, but we made up our minda that the next young fellow we came across would have to be Senora Somebody or other, and travel with tho show. Wedid not havo long to wait. At une of the mining camps where wo stop- ped wo noticed a_slender young fellow with big eyes and curly hairand a fair complexion. He was a sort of a hanger- on, and didn’t seem to have any regular business, though he worked around more or less for the men, and made himself useful. He accepted our proposition af- teo a good, deol of persuasion, and wo agreod to go with us when wo moved on, and on his part it was stipulated that from the time we started he was to bea woman, The next plice wo opened at was at Las Animas, Wo had no bills or anything of that kiud, but wo took patas to giveit out that we had a lady performer Las land P eut, dian, Instructoror clorgyman, —Argonaut. who was celebrated tho world offer for her HA oo the Penbody uuuxul‘m.mm W, ) cl . or, No. 4 Bulfinch Street, Bostoa be'"'"y' 1t wasa Lll):kt scheme. The boy looked well in the costume which we gave him, and uader tho lights he m ade really a pretty sight. The first night, as soon as he entered the ring, the whole crowd got up and_yelled, and then every man of them made a rush for the centre, bowing and ealuting him. They all had to shake hands, and say & word or two, and get some responss, Two or threo times wo tried to clear the ring, but un- successfully. Most of tho men would go out, leaving a few behind, who, improv- ing the opportunity, would engage her in conversation. Then the others would straggle back again, until the hubub was as bad as ever, They all had to tell her whero they came from, how many eisters they had, tho tender regard they entertained for them, and two or three even went 8o tar as to as- sure her that they had mothers back in the states somewhere, as if she might get the impression that they had grown on & sago brush on the alkali plains, We finally persuaded thom to leave, and, with many a ‘God bless you!' and ‘Just call on me if you get scared,’ they re- sumed their seats, This dort of thing went along for a week, and we were look- ing upon our fortunes as made when trouble came upon us, THE LANDSLIDE, “Ono of our groasers got ugly, and, after a fight or two with ifferent mem- bers of tho company, we dismissed him, e then circulated the report that our lady was neither more nor less than a boy picked up on the border, and that wo had been playing & mighty moan trick on the camp. A dole- gation was sent to us to make in quiry, an in and evil hour, believing that we might as well pull up stakes and move on any way, | admitted that the fair performer was a lad, The raen went away laughing'y, and we thought nothing would come of 1t. I searched around for themen. Presently I found Dan,and he and I, though badly bruised, set out over at all, and wero safe and sound on the original site of the tent. The bhoy was discovered at last, half covered with | _ mud and gravel, and inseneible. I litted him up aud gave Lim s Jittle brandy, and he soon revived, When daylight came we found our stuff would not pay to move, and we left & good deal of it whero itwas, We didu't show any more that soason, Dan went off somewhere, and the boyaud I paid «ff the others, and they scattered. 1 shall slways belicve that those miners started that landslide, but they said they dida’t.
